The Saboteur won Best of E3 2009 for Artistic Design for Xbox®360 video game and entertainment system by IGN.com and is based on a true story and should probably be on everyone’s wish list for Christmas.

The Saboteur to Hit Before Christmas

Pandemic (Mercenaries, Star Wars: Battlefront) looked to history for the inspiration for its next FPS, The Saboteur. The game pits you in the role of a soldier well versed in the skills of sabotage, who’s working with the resistance during the Nazi occupation of France.

You’ll take on specialized missions throughout the game, to take out high-priority Nazi targets, though other objectives will present themselves as the game unfolds. Much like the protagonist in Assassin’s Creed, the main character here has the entire city as his playground, and he can climb, jump, and slide his way to any thing and everything you see. (Yes, Nazi Paris is an open, free-roaming world, complete with vehicles you can drive.)

The game’s big innovation is how it uses color as both a storytelling device and a gameplay mechanic. As you sabotage Nazi installations and free various parts of Paris, those areas will turn from black & white to color. Colorized bits of black & white locations will also clue you in to objectives like secondary targets. The color-vs.-black & white technique is also a creative license motif used to illustrate the horrors of life under Nazi rule. It’s a fascinating visual contrast that should make for a really interesting gaming experience.

E3 ‘09: The Saboteur

On Monday, EA Games hosted its own press conference here at E3 2009. Here are a few highlights from the event.

EA Sports announces Fight Night Round 4, for the first time allowing you to pit Ali against Tyson, with spectacular-looking results. Check out the big-screen demo:

EA Sports announces and demos Grand Slam Tennis for Wii, complete with a surprise appearance by tennis superstar Pete Sampras.

Brutal Legend designer Tim Schafer takes the stage to unveil several new characters and show off new video featuring star Jack Black. Note: this video is NSFW.

A full level demo for Pandemic’s The Saboteur, which features creative use of color and black & white, and finds you working with the resistance in Nazi-occupied France during WWII.

Last but by far not least, a progress report on the highly-anticipated MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, featuring on-stage Jedi and the world premiere of the game’s cinematic trailer. (If only the prequel trilogy had been more like what the trailer shows!)

E3 ‘09: EA press conference highlights

From Pandemic Studios, the folks behind the Star Wars: Battlefront and Mercenaries games, comes The Saboteur, an action adventure set in Nazi-occupied France. Rating is pending for this one, but it’s almost certain to get an M for Mature. It’s expected late Fall or early Winter for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
