Clinton has been touted as a choice who can “hit the ground running” as she has a substantial knowledge of foreign affairs and is a respected envoy.

Assuming that she will be approved by the Senate (each cabinet member will be questioned by and voted upon by the Senate, following the inauguration), Clinton will relinquish her New York Senate seat. She has served in the Senate since 2001.

By nominating Clinton, Obama is staying true to his pledge to staff his cabinet with diverse and possibly antagonistic parties. The Senators did not see eye to eye on many issues over the campaign – and it will be interesting how Secretary Clinton approaches the task of representing the administration abroad.

Also on Monday, Obama confirmed that Defense Secretary, Robert Gates, will continue in that post in the new administration.

Many “big” and interesting names have been in the media for the “top” offices. But, of course, nothing will be official or final until Barack Obama is sworn in as President in January and his nominations are sent to the US Senate for “advice and consent.” Over the years this process has proven tricky for many new Presidents – but it appears that the Obama team is taking special care in their selection process and with a pronounced Democratic advantage in the new Senate, Obama should not have much trouble, barring any unforeseen events, getting approval for his nominations.

The President-Elect started off his new “team” by naming Illinois Congressman, Rahm Emanuel, as his White House Chief of Staff. Emanuel is a politics “lifer” having worked on campaigns and in the Democratic Party since the early 1980s. He was a key strategist in the (Bill) Clinton Presidential campaign and he served as a senior advisor in the Clinton White House. In 2002 (after a brief stint in the banking industry), Emanuel ran for and won the House seat for Illinois’ 5th district. He has since been a powerful member of Congress and has served as the Democratic Caucus Chairman since 2006.

Laura — I’m about to head to Grant Park to talk to everyone gathered there, but I wanted to write to you first. We just made history. And I don’t want you to forget how we did it. You made history every single day during this campaign — every day you knocked on doors, made a donation, or talked to your family, friends, and neighbors about why you believe it’s time for change. I want to thank all of you who gave your time, talent, and passion to this campaign. We have a lot of work to do to get our country back on track, and I’ll be in touch soon about what comes next. But I want to be very clear about one thing… All of this happened because of you. Thank you, Barack
Oooh, he just used enormity — that’s not cool from a vocabulary standpoint except that he transitioned into talk of war and trouble — look it up. The media and politicians have been mis-using it for years. It doesn’t mean what you think it does.
[Comment From Laura]
Main Entry: enor·mi·ty Pronunciation: \i-ˈnȯr-mə-tē\ Function: noun Inflected Form(s): plural enor·mi·ties Date: 15th century 1: an outrageous, improper, vicious, or immoral act 2: the quality or state of being immoderate, monstrous, or outrageous ; especially : great wickedness 3: the quality or state of being huge : immensity 4: a quality of momentous importance or impact usage Enormity, some people insist, is improperly used to denote large size. They insist on enormousness for this meaning, and would limit enormity to the meaning “great wickedness.” Those who urge such a limitation may not recognize the subtlety with which enormity is actually used. It regularly denotes a considerable departure from the expected or normal . When used to denote large size, either literal or figurative, it usually suggests something so large as to seem overwhelming and may even be used to suggest both great size
[Comment From Laura]
It’s a borderline choice of words, but in contemporary usage, I guess it’s okay. I’ll stop being an English teacher now. It’s a good speech.
7:14
7:17
Virginia exit polls – mccain edge with white voters – but obama wins 91% of african american vote
