Romo attended Eastern Illinois University, and although he won a number of awards and was second in Div I-AA in passing efficiency, he went unnoticed in the draft. He was the first Eastern Illinois University play to win the Walter Payton Award, but was passed up although the Cowboys showed interest. Following the draft, he signed with them as a free agent.</p>
