By Amy Schatz May 27, 2008; Page A6
Few presidential candidates have had as much experience dealing with technology and telecommunications issues as Sen. McCain, who for years chaired a Senate committee that deals with them. But he rarely brings tech issues up on the campaign trail and hasn’t released many significant policy proposals about them yet.

By contrast, his likely rival, Sen. Obama of Illinois, presented a detailed technology agenda in November that addressed many of the industries’ hot-button issues — including support for building faster broadband networks and keeping Internet traffic unfettered. He has subsequently raised significantly more Silicon Valley cash than Sen. McCain.

“We’re at an important point in the history of the media — a point where the decentralized Internet and the centralized media are finally meeting head on,” said Tim Wu, Columbia Law professor and chair of the Free Press board of directors. “This conference is part of a movement to make sure that this time around the public interest is preserved.”

CCI opposes the practice of ‘throttling” by telecom giants such as Rogers and Bell who examine Internet traffic in order to deliberately slow down certain applications. The CCI hopes that the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) will quickly intervene to stop this illegal practice. CCI asks also that the government take the necessary legislative actions in order to guarantee the principle of net neutrality as recommended by the Telecommunications Policy Review Panel in 2006.

“The Max Planck Institute for Software Development (MPI) has just released major study showing that Comcast and Cox Cable engage in major blocking of BitTorrent traffic regardless of network congestion levels.”

While simultaneously offering us;

“I eagerly await the whacky weasel words that will inevitably follow. Will it be hand-waving technobabble? Ad Hominem attacks, cheap rhetorical tricks, and endless hair-splitting about definitions or ‘what I actually said was blah blah blah’? An effort to brush past this by proclaiming ‘this was never really about whether there were WMBs (weapons of mass BitTorrent blockage), this was about freeing the good customers of Comcast from the oppression of Al Qaeda bandwidth hogs that use 90% of the capacity?’”

Harold tosses in a jab at “there’s plenty of competition Scott Cleland” and another at a certain “Decider-in-Chief.”

The WSJ produces an FCC quote (to be filed under “Oh… Yeah… Sure… I… Believe… This…);

“The FCC is always concerned about allegations that broadband consumers aren’t able to reach any legal content on the Internet they choose,” said Rob Kenny, an FCC spokesman. “If we receive any complaints of this nature, we will review them expeditiously.”

Like I said… trust your telco lately???
