Earlier this week, Penn State tight end Andrew Quarless was suspended along with two other players – defensive starters Maurice Evans and Abe Koroma. Apparently, the police were called to the apartment the three share with teammate AJ Wallace when they threw a loud party. Upon searching the premises, police found a “small amount” of marijuana.

Wallace was found to be uninvolved right away, leaving the other three guys to take the heat. All were suspended, at least until Coach Joe Paterno got more information, since no one was formally charged with anything yet. Today, though, we were given a pleasant surprise. Quarless showed up in uniform.

Reportedly, “new information” has come to light, showing that Quarless was not involved. You can read more here.

I’m interested to find out what “new information” could have been found. I’m assuming that the reefer was discovered in certain rooms, perhaps even bedrooms, and maybe that’s how Wallace was cleared right away. That’s just speculation on my part, but I couldn’t really see how else one out of four roommates would be cleared, since police say Wallace was present that night.

So how did Quarless escape trouble (this time – during the spring, he was suspended for drinking and driving)? My hypothesis (again, pure speculation) is that his roommates, Evans and Koroma, ‘fessed up and told police that Quarless had nothing to do with the bud. Or, maybe they drug-tested all three and he came up clean.

In any case, I hope Quarless cleans up his act. He has talent, but his off-field problems are overshadowing him.

This past week, an Oklahoma police department reported that Jamelle Holieway was arrested and spent a few hours in jail. The charges? Unpaid traffic tickets.

For those of your with a short-term memory (of for those of you who don’t give a rat’s ass about Oklahoma), Holieway was the freshman quarterback who replaced the injured Troy Aikmen in 1985. He led the Sooners to a National Championship that year and, to date, is the only true freshman to accomplish this victory.

This would just be a funny story, but there’s more to the story. The unpaid tickets were for speeding and driving on a suspended license, both offenses from September of 2006. Holieway has also been charged with marijuana possession in the past.

I’m not saying that this happens to every big star in college, but think about it. The kid had a bright future. He was injured during later years and saw little to no action on the gridiron. He did go on to the NFL for two seasons as a Raider in 1989 and 1990, and also played for the Canadian football league for two seasons, but his career was effectively over half-way through college.

This isn’t excusing the poor choices he’s made to use (well, possess anyway) drugs and avoid paying tickets, but it just goes to show that you could set records one season and be in a ditch on your back the next. Kids, get your degrees. I mean you, Tim Tebow.

I mean, really, they’re right. Duke’s record over the last nine seasons is 13 and 90. NINETY. So, yeah, it was a good argument…and they won the case…but somehow, I feel like its like all the teams were standing around at a party and Duke just yelled out “I HAVE A SMALL DICK!!!”

Today, the AP reported that Oklahoma is taking new precautions to avoid football players getting paid for work they did not do. Because of the NCAA fiasco last year, employers are now no longer allowed to have more than five players at a time working for them.

But OU ad the NCAA are missing the bigger picture, which employers everywhere seem to understand. Football players shouldn’t have to work! Why?

College football players shouldn’t have to work because…

1)…football is going to be their career. There are TONS of teams in the NFL, and don’t most players get drafted anyway? I mean, why should you have to work during college. That’s time you could spend thinking about football.

2)…whether your team wins or loses is more important than the players’ futures. Ok, even if they aren’t drafted for some reason, worry about the future tomorrow. TODAY there is a game to win! That’s a lot more important than the success of an individual player. The TEAM is a well-oiled machine. Who cares if what you’re doing is the right thing for just one person. He won’t be around in a few years anyway!

3)…life isn’t fair, and students need to learn that from the start. Sure, it may not be fair that the most talented players get special breaks while other players have to actually work and go to class. Guess what? Life isn’t fair! People need to learn that while they’re young. You step on people to get what you can out of life for yourself.

Don’t worry, employers. I’m looking out for you. I know that your school is important to you and you want your teams to win. That’s what matters.

Oh, and just in case you have NO ability to detect sarcasm in writing, the above is all one big statement to employers out there – it is freaking sad that schools like OU even have to put rules like this into effect. You’re adults. You should know better for goodness sake. If you college winning a game is so important to you that you’re willing to corrupt the system, look in the mirror. You are what is wrong with the world today.

Again, no disrespect to rape victims out there – it just didn’t line up to make sense with this story.

It doesn’t matter how I felt about Scott as a person either. It pisses me off that this whole thing got dragged out and caused him to miss his senior season. Scott still aspired to be in the NFL, and if he works hard enough, it is definitely possible, but it will be a hell of a lot harder now.

This whole situation was handled badly from the start. Scott acted like a douchebag. The girl acted like a bitch. The prosecutors acted like tools. The media reporting the story acted like it was the story of the year.

I’m just glad it’s over.

Serious man. This was not a good plan. I know that Bell didn’t play much in 2007, but he did catch some passes and with the graduation of Anthony Morelli, he had a real chance to get back out there and work with the new quarterback on some plays.

I hate to hear of players throwing away their football careers (and potentially his college career in this case) over some kind of silly fight with another person. Can’t we just all be friends?

What really happened here? We may never know. Police suspect that Bradford was targeted by people he knew in an attempt to steal recent casino winnings that he had on his person when he was found.

Are these the real killers? It looks that way, but our legal system isn’t perfect. I’m hoping that they are, though, because this world deserves a little justice now and again. When someone is shot and killed over $3000, we need to take a moment and think about our society’s moral standards.

I just read the news story of your arrest and cracked up. You threatened to “light the place up”? I took a look at your bio…you’re from Ardmore, Oklahoma, not Detroit or Atlanta or New York. I’m sorry, you’re not allowed to say “light the place up” unless your from some ghetto. I’m making that an official rule.

This is Ardmore. The bad section. (Photo credit: Wikicommons)
But really…come on. You threw your college football career away for some kind of little bar fight. What, was someone making fun of you? If not, they are now.

ESPN is reporting that today, Lloyd Lake walked out of the courtroom before giving his deposition. Well isn’t that handy.
For those of you that have been living under a rock, Lake is the supposed sports manager suing Reggie Bush for a breach of contract. He claims that he bought the USC star a car and other gifts (a blatant breaking of NCAA rules) while he was still in college in exchange for a promise to become the running back’s manager.
When Bush chose another manager and Lake’s company effectively shut down, he decided to bring this shady deal to light. Of course, Bush’s camp is denying the whole thing every happened.

Bush has long criticized Lake for “trash talking” to the media but failing to show up in court or deal with his lawyers. Looks like he’s right.

Why did Lake walk out of the courthouse? Are you sitting down?

He was intimidated by Bush’s legal team having private security present.

Stay sitting. Bush’s lawyers responded by saying that Lake has threatened them in the past and that his lawyer, Brian Watkins, told them that Lake was a gang member who needs to be paid off or else he can’t promise that he’ll be able to control his client.

I’m sorry, did we just walk onto the set of a rap video? Maybe Biggie Smalls should have played football.
