US Men Disqualified in 4×100m Relay

The USA men’s 4×100m relay team was eliminated during a qualifying round on Thursday when they dropped the baton during the hand-out between Darvis Patton (third leg) and Tyson Gay (anchor). This is the end of a disappointing Olympics for Tyson Gay, who was expected to be one of the stars of the Games. Gay failed to qualify for the men’s 200m event at the US Olympic trials in July after suffering a hamstring injury. Tyson Gay Fails to Qualify

Wow! The much-heralded and one of the favorites to win the men’s 100m event, Tyson Gay failed to qualify for the event in Saturday’s semi-final race. Gay finished fifth in his race, where only the top Four times advance. Gay told NBC after the race that he had no excuses and his leg felt 100 percent.
Among those qualifying for the 100m are Jamaica’s Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell as well as Walter Dix and Darris Patton of the United States. The final will be run Sunday morning (Saturday night in North America).

Tyson Gay, who set an American record earlier in the week when he qualified for the men’s 100m event, fell to the ground and had to be carried off of the track at the US Olympic qualifying meet in Eugene, Oregon during a men’s 200m quarter-final race.
The extent of his injury and his availibity for the Olympic Games in Beijing are unknown at this point.
