Rant: Unreal Engine 3 games eat up too much space

If you’re as cheap as I am, then you’re probably holding off on that PC upgrade for years. A couple of months ago, I probably would’ve said that despite the age of my current rig, it has yet to disappoint. While it can still manage to run Mass Effect, I noticed that I can only install a couple of games on my hard drive because of space restrictions.
Are the size of current games really growing? I decided to do a little more digging.
I looked at the games installed on my hard drive. What do Gears of War, Bioshock, and Mass …read more

2K Games licenses Unreal Engine 3

Here’s something that would leave you thinking: Epic Games announced that its Unreal Engine 3 will be used for unannounced games in development by 2K Games, the publisher of recent bestseller Bioshock.
As you know, Bioshock uses a modified version of the Unreal Engine 3, so this news doesn’t come as a surprise at all. However, the most perplexing part of this tidbit is about those “unannounced games in development.”
What are those games?
You mean aside from rumors of Bioshock making its way to the PS3, 2K is coming out with another game that uses Unreal Engine 3? I guess they are.

More eye candy making its way to Unreal Engine 3

The Unreal Engine 3’s eye candy is about to get even prettier. How? By incorporating a global illumination system, that’s how. Epic Games and rendering technology developer Illuminate Labs have entered a deal, making global illumination a part of Unreal Engine 3.
Beast, Illuminate’s global illumination system, will allow the Epic engine to have more realistic lighting. This system takes into account not only the light that comes directly from a light source, but also cases where light rays from the same source are reflected by other surfaces.

UT3 and Gears of War to attack the Mac

Great news to all you Mac twitch gamers! Two marquee shooters are being developed for your platform of choice. First is Unreal Tournament 3, which as you know is coming out for the PC this coming November. According to Macworld, this news shouldn’t surprise Mac fans because it has been mentioned in Epic Games’ forums, and has been said to be suitable for the Mac.

The other shooter might come as a surprise though. Epic VP Mark Rein told GameTrailers that Gears of War is also coming to the platform.

Notice anything interesting about the two shooters?

Ghostlight shifts new FPS to World War I theme

Game makers are officially sick of the World War II-themed games. What do they do about it? They start making World War I-themed games. According to a press release from game publisher Ghostlight, they want to set the benchmark higher with To End All Wars, a WWI FPS scheduled to come out in summer of 2008.

To End All Wars is being developed for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, and is using Epic’s Unreal Engine 3—the same engine used for Gears of War and Bioshock.

Not much has been said about the new FPS, other than developer Kuju’s …read more

New Unreal Tournament controls are so slick

At least, that’s what Official Xbox Magazine said in a new, six-page article. If you pick up the July issue, you’ll also get new details on the game, and it’s a doozy. Team Xbox also said that Unreal Tournament 3 is looking better that Gears of War.
Is such a claim possible? You and I know how purdy Gears of War looks.
Here’s the short of it: Epic Games, the makers of both games, has been working furiously to improve the Unreal Engine 3 since they released Gears of War late last year. Your proof:
