United States tennis player, Lindsey Davenport withdrew from the women’s singles competition today, citing a knee injury that she agravated playing at Wimbledon earlier this summer. She still hopes to compete in the doubles competition with her partner, Liezel Huber. That competition begins on Sunday.
Davenport, 32, won the Gold Medal in women’s singles at the 1996 Atlanta Games. She is a former #1-ranked player and has three Grand Slam singles victories to her credit. Her last win was at the Australian Open in 2005.

The leading scorer on the US Olympic soccer team Abby Wambach, will have to watch her team compete from the sidelines. The 28-year-old Rochester native broke her left tibia and fibula last night during the first half of a match with Brazil. She will have surgery on the leg and be off for 12 weeks, missing the Beijing Games.
The Brazil-US match was a final tune-up for the team prior to going to Beijing. Despite Wambach’s injury, the United States won 1-0.
