I have previously written about the USB 3.0 format which was high speed and prime for video streaming (USB 3.0 for Video Streaming). The excitement for USB 3.0 continues and I am particularly waiting for Buffalo to release their Hard disk drives running on USB 3.0 before the end of the month.

Buffalo is one of the few companies I am loyal to for my hard disk usage as this company specializes in durable portable hard disks that can withstand rough travel usage. Buffalo is a company that has offices in Japan, USA, Germany, UK, Ireland and Taiwan and offer mostly networking and storage products.

The company has announced that their HD-HU3 series of USB 3.0 external drives is going to be the first one in the world to ship to retailers. Additionally, Buffalo is going to offer NEC’s IFC-PCIE2U3 2-port PCI-Express x1 host controller to complement their USB 3.0 hard drive.

The initial offering would be available in Japan and I am still happy because most likely the Philippine retailers would have this model as well within a month of its release. The storage space for these USB 3.0 drives would be 1 TB which costs $225, USD, their 1.5 TB which costs $284 USD, and a 2 TB drive for $ 530 USD. The controller would be priced at $60 USD.

Data is very important and I have the same files stored in multiple drives to ensure security of data. The Buffalo 2TB running at USB 3.0 is a welcome addition to my gear.

Reports and news has been on-going for quite sometime that the USB 3.0 is expected to ship out before the end of 2009 from Taiwanese manufacturers.

What does faster USB mean? Faster file transfer? One of the things industry is expecting is the proliferation of Video streaming since the USB 3.0 is capable of streaming 1080i HD video streams from a camera to say a netbook. Today, this setup is already being used in USB 2.0 but a way, way faster USB interface could see an explosion on real-time video streaming.

Portable terra byte sized hard disk is being adapted by manufacturers and I would surely use the USB 3.0 alongside a terra byte portable storage with a smile.

Early estimates had USB 3.0 not arriving until sometime in 2010, but Nikkei says that thanks to the faster-than-expected development of “compliant integrated circuits (IC), instruments for equipment developers, and more” throughout the industry.

The USB 3.0 spec, aka “SuperSpeed USB,” claims that it will offer 4.8Gbps transfers, allowing for everything from crazy-fast file dumps to 1080i HD video streams to external monitors.
The USB 3.0 spec, aka “SuperSpeed USB,” claims that it will offer 4.8Gbps transfers, allowing for everything from crazy-fast file dumps to 1080i HD video streams to external monitors. Like the USB 2.0 specification before it, USB 3.0 will be 100% backwards compatible with prior USB hardware, but you’ll need 3.0 hardware on both ends to achieve the highest transfer speeds.
