Ever wonder what it might look like in your neighborhood? I do, but I pretty much knew that my apartment would be okay, however it’s really interesting to see it in living colour. I found this cool mashup of Google Maps with sea level mapped over it–Sea Level Rise Explorer – Global Warming Art–and zoomed into the area around Victoria. Pretty interesting data. What does your city look like?

Could sea level rise that fast?

Am I being alarmist? You can decide that for yourself, however I think having the information is better than not.

Will sea level rise catastrophically? There are theories that it could, however I’m not going to raise that alarm bell. My thinking is that any sea level rise will be gradual, punctuated with small rapid rises as large chunks of Antarctic break off into the open ocean.

Taking public data and making it accessible

What I like about this mashup the most is taking this complex and huge data set and present it in a way that people can get it.

Unfortunately the really cool ways to look at the paleoecology and paleoclimate data that I contributed to, the software is way, way out of date.

Maybe someday…
