A while back my brother gave me the heads up about a website called Radar.net. Today another twitter friend recommended the site to me. Normally I’m pretty good with peer pressure, but since two people asked me to check it out, I figure I will.

The basics of the site are a place and a service for you to share videos and photos with others whether it be on the Radar.net site, twitter, Facebook, flickr or your own blog. All the features you’d expect are here and then some.

I’ve normally been a fan of TwitPic to share photos on twitter, but since they’re still not taking advantage of the Oauth functionality, I haven’t been using them as much. I still haven’t gotten Facebook to allow me to post images from my phone yet for some reason either, so I’m hoping this service will kill these two birds (well, one bird and one face) with one stone.

Sign-up for an account on Radar, link your twitter, Facebook and flickr accounts and you’re ready to roll. You’ll get a private Radar email address to use to send images to when you want to share them. There’s also a mobile app you can download to make it even easier to send images from your phone while you’re on the go.

When you make an update to Radar, you can decide whether or not to include the update to your twitter or Facebook feeds as well. Very nice and very easy to get going on.

12seconds is exactly what its name implies: a video-sharing site with a twelve-second length restriction. Yes, it’s video Twitter, and they’re not ashamed to call themselves that.
Given that Twitter’s having trouble scaling with just text, you have to wonder how a video Twitter would scale. Twitter’s architecture is built to handle its microblogging aspect, but not its messaging aspect; that’s why it goes down a lot. Hope 12seconds avoids that pitfall.

How geeky can you get? Find out at SciVee, a video-sharing site for presenting scientific papers. Niche-specific features include figures, references, and full papers.
My biggest beef: no embeds. It’s a huge missed opportunity: SciVee embeds could incorporate SlideShare-like features for the figures and Scribd-like features for the papers. Then again, bloggers probably don’t want to put their readers to sleep with talk of scientific papers.

I’d like to point out something else BBC News Interactive head Pete Clifton mentioned at the Future of News Conference, something far too many online marketers still don’t understand: video embeds generate clickthroughs.
“The results from the trial we did with embedded video were hugely positive in terms of the conversion rate of people reading the stories and watching the video,” Mr Clifton told the conference.

Oliver Luft, Om Malik, and Liz Gannes all highlight how the BBC is looking for greater relevance and added value in online video use.

“With the embedded video, up to 40 per cent of people were watching it. In its normal format, when you watch it in a different place [in a standalone player], it’s about two per cent.

The BBC has always held a positive attitude towards video superdistribution, hence their awesome deal with YouTube. I’m not surprised they’d quantify the benefits of embeds. Far too many online video producers still trap their videos on their sites like greedy little dinosaurs.

YouTube just added a very “live” community feature: active sharing, an opt-in service which displays the usernames of people currently watching a specific video. It also displays your recent viewing history on your profile.
This thing’s just begging for chatroom functionality.

Courtney Cox and Jennifer Aniston are friends. They both came from Friends. So, it appears that Cox needs some help to boost the ratings of her show called Dirt. So what do you do? Ask your friend Aniston to appear as guest. Cool. How about asking your friend for some kissing scene? More coolness. It’s a hit in YouTube. See for yourself and tell me what you think about it.
