Improve Your Hard disk performance

There are just files in your computer that drags and hogs your hard disk. Windows doesn’t readily give you the option to search and find the size of the content of the nested folders. Don’t lose hope, there is an application called “WinDirStat” which analyze the makeup of your hard disk and gives you the information via a size-ordered directory view.

The highlight features of this application are as follows:
WinDirStat is able to read the whole directory tree and then shows it in three useful views:

The directory list, is similar to the Windows Explorer but is sorted by file/subtree size,
The treemap, …read more

The Fastest Disk Imaging Software, Anyone?

I came across a software that is free, and marketed as having no string attached which also labels itself as the fastest disk imaging software.

The Macrium reflect is a free disk imaging software which has the following key features:
1. You would be able to create a disk image while Windows is running using Microsoft Volume Shadow copy Service (VSS)
2. The image can be put to network, USB, Firewire drives and DVDs
3. There is a built in scheduler
4. There are 32 bit and native 64 bit versions
5. It has industry leading compression levels and speeds
6. It has HTML log files
7. …read more

Safari with 11 millions downloads

Apple Safari version 4 web browser is reported by the company to have been downloaded by 11 million times during the first three days from it’s release. According to the report, the browser was downloaded by 6 million times. Ok, my team downloaded this browser at least 5 times not because we want to use this browser, but because the client wants us to test the SharePoint site we are building for them on this browser.

Anyways, the browser first came out in public beta last February and Apple has been marketing this browser as the fastest browser in the world …read more

Apple Taking a Stab at Vista

An Apple executive couldn’t contain himself of taking a stab at Microsoft Windows Vista during the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference. Microsoft is moving fast to erase the Windows Vista image and replace it with the upcoming Windows 7, and the Apple executive thought this is the best time to kick the software giant while the Vista is still in the minds of people.

Despite all the positive remarks on Windows 7, the apple executive is saying that Windows 7 is still the same Windows Vista code base, and labels the operating system as just another Vista.
Bertrand Serlet who is the …read more

Has Apple Missed the Vista Opportunity?

I am reading an article which says that Apple had the biggest chance of increasing their market share when Vista was released. Apple’s share did increase but was still hovering over the 10 percent market share catering to high-end individuals. But in this economy, high end-buyers are also looking into cutting down expenses and Apple should have capitalized on that. While their philosophy had always been on high profit margins, mass sales could have been a vertical market they could have tried.

I do not like high priced stuff and if Apple had cheaper options, I might try their product …read more

Ultimate Asus Eee Keyboard PC

Netbooks are in, and now Asus is turning the standards one level up once again with their all in one Asus keyboard. This packaged keyboard comes with an Atom N270  processor, 1.6 GHz, 533MHz frontside bus, and 512KB L2 cache. The keyboard also comes with a 32GB SSD, 1GB of RAM, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI, stereo speakers, and a 5-inch 800×480 touchscreen display/trackpad combo.

From the way it looks, it seems this keyboard can load a Windows 7 operating system, although there is no confirmation on the operating system that would be bundled with it. If previous packages are going …read more

Trayconize Any Program to System Tray

Trayconize Any Program to System Tray

The ability to minimize programs to the system tray has been made possible for a reason. There are always programs which we don’t intend to exit but do not use as frequently.
During work, e.g., we open a web browser – because we are so used to it – but more importanly have several other programs opened simultaneously. While navigating from Microsoft Outlook to Eclipse to the work folders using Alt + Tab, it is irritating to find Mozilla Firefox in between. Also, the task bar has only this much place.
Still, most of the web browsers like the Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox …read more

Tech Channel Roundup After Thanksgiving Week

The Mac users can cheer up once again. Juan brings us news that Google Calendar supports iCal. In fact, I’ve read somewhere that Google Calendar is trying to be as syncable and integrable with other calendars as possible.
Milo recently summarized a Sandra Gittlen series called “Mac Vs Vista” quoting her excerpts. The series covering Manageability, Reliability, Security, Price and Others is going to surprise every reader in more than one way. Be sure to glance through them if you don’t have enough time to go over the actual series itself.
You’ve all heard about Microsoft and Yahoo! talking. Again. But have …read more

Incompatibilities still Plague Windows Vista

If you’re running Windows Vista and you need a multifunction printer, Brother’s MFC-5860CN would seem like a great choice. After all, it’s proudly sold as “Certified for Windows Vista.” We should’ve asked certified “for what?” but then a blank stare would probably be thrown in our direction. The 5860CN is capable of scanning any documents to turn them into digital files, but the optical character recognition software that comes bundled with the printer, PaperPort 9 from Nuance, isn’t Vista compatible. (Brother recommends that Vista owners use Microsoft Office’s Document Imaging feature.) And the printer’s Internet fax option? Forget about that, …read more
