Take a cold shower as soon as you wake up. There is nothing like telling your body it’s time to wake up like an ice cold shower.

Sprinting in the middle of the afternoon. Get your heart pumping for a burst of energy mid-day.

Get away from the heavy meals/foods. Eating light will prevent the after meal desire for a nap.

Give yourself indicators of when it is time to be awake and it is time to go to sleep. For example, lighting, temperature, and clothes can help your mind and body associate when it is time to shut down or get ready to go.

The hardest part for most people that want to get a good workout early in the morning is the actual getting up part. I used to be really good about it, but then again I used to be really goods about going to bed at a decent hour. One thing I have always found that work well for me is putting your workout clothes right next to your bed and use a clock without a snooze alarm. I’m the type of person that will hit the snooze 3 or 4 times before I get up if I’m feeling extra lazy.

Image: sxc.hu

Once you make a habit of getting up and you get a routine going that helps you get up and get your mind alert and your blood flowing, it comes easy every morning there after. I was flipping through a winter 2006 Exercise & Health Magazine and I cam across this article.

Awakening Advice: Need to make sure you get up early to hit the gym? Relying only on your alarm clock can wake you up, but won;t help you feel less groggy. Try a new way: leave your blinds open and move your bed in such a way that you’ll get the early morning sunlight. Even if your eyes aren’t open yet, the increase in light helps reset your circadian clock, according to sleep specialist Gila Lindley, Ph. D.

This advice is great if your schedule work out that you can get up when the sun is already up before you head to the gym. Also it helps to have your bedroom on the east side of the house and you don’t have peeping toms peeking in on you.
