First up: Jolene Anderson.

Will brawl bring viewers to the WNBA?

Of course, the brawl’s been in the news over the last few days. Hell, I had a discussion about the brawl with a recruiter I met with while here at the UNITY convention in Chicago. Anyway, Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News asked the question, and here’s his answer.
But here’s what the skirmish proved: There is passion in the women’s game. For many, the WNBA is a below-the-basket game played by the old girls club. The brawl has revealed the players to be competitive athletes who would not be more at home on the Ladies PGA Tour. No one …read more

Five questions with Betty Lennox

Every week, we touch base with Internet Broadcasting’s five questions series, and this week is no different. This time, Atlanta Dream star Betty Lennox reflects on the team’s first franchise victory after 17 consecutive losses to open the season. From KSAT.com:
Q: Is there anything positive you can take away from the 0-17 start?
A: Every game, I think, we’ve gotten better. We’ve seen improvements. Other teams we’ve played have said, “You are such a different team from the first time we played you.” So, you really have to focus on that stuff — every game we play, we are getting better.

How the Silver Stars succeed

Similar to how their brotherly counterparts in the NBA seem to be, the San Antonio Silver Stars don’t have a bunch of stars, but they have a set of complimentary players to build around Sophia Young and Becky Hammon. Q from the outstanding blog “Rethinking Basketball” did an in-depth analysis of the Stars following their back-to-back against LA and Phoenix this week.
The Silver Stars embody what people mean when they say that WNBA basketball is “basketball the way it should be played” or any number of variations on that statement. It’s not flashy, it can seem dull at times, but …read more

The wild, wild west from Scout.com

Bob Corwin of Scout.com revisited his Western Conference predictions this week, and with a tip of the hat to the Women’s Hoops Blog, I present a bit of those recaps to you.
Update: (Candace) Parker continues to live up to the hype, drawing larger than average crowds for away games. However, she has failed to reproduce her initial effort against the Mercury. This is in a large part due to the balance in scoring of the Sparks front line, however. Parker’s versatility, though, shows just how good she is. Through her first 14 games, per game …read more

Five questions with New York Liberty center Janel McCarville

From the shameless self-promotion files comes David Zingler and Internet Broadcasting’s latest sit-down with a WNBA star, all via KSAT.com. This time, it’s recent WNBA player of the week Janel McCarville of the New York Liberty, who talked about her past health issues and how she battled back in becoming 2007’s Most Improved Player.
Q: Last year you won the Most Improved Player award. What was the key to your turnaround?
A: Confidence, overall — just having people believe in me and also getting the playing time I needed. I got a lot of confidence overseas, which carried over into the WNBA …read more

New York Liberty plan Outdoor Classic Game

There’s been talk for a while, but with the recent success of the NHL’s outdoor game last season, the New York Liberty will be the first to take the plunge by holding a regular-season game outdoors on July 19 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, home of tennis’ U.S. Open.
Here’s the team’s promotional video at YouTube.

I’ve got an e-mail out to see if this game will be livestreamed. As of now, there doesn’t seem to be any national broadcast of the game listed on the team’s Web site.

SLAM highlights five from the New York Liberty

Fresh off their triple-overtime thriller against the Connecticut Sun, SLAM Online talked to five of the New York Liberty for a look into their season so far (they jumped above .500 with Thursday’s win). This looks as though it’ll be a recurring blog, as these entries seemed to be introductions more than anything else.
Essence Carson, Loree Moore, Ashley Battle, Jessica Davenport and Tiffany Jackson contribute.
