“This afternoon at the SMX Seattle conference we announced the Google Website Workout contest.

And I’m all for it!

I guess I could say I wish I had seen this from its inception but that isn’t true. Since posts about Walmart’s Classifieds have part of my current interest, I saw Erick’s at TC and read through the comments, coming across one by Bob Wyman. He mentioned the “no-coincidence” thought that Walmart’s new classifieds are being publicized at about the same time the newspaper industry is attempting to “recapture” the classified ad business.

Hence ReinventingClassifieds.com.

From their very first post;

“We’re especially looking for ideas that will help the newspaper industry figure out how to recover some of its lost classifieds business.”

To their post about Wal-Mart’s new Classifieds and Wal-Mart’s official line;

“We recently launched Walmart.com Classifieds beta to provide additional opportunities for our customers to save money and live better. This free, community-based resource allows customers to buy and sell items locally, find local jobs and learn about events in their area. Our new Classifieds beta at Walmart.com provides an expanded offering of products and services, the majority of which are not traditionally available from Wal-Mart, such as job listings, automobiles, rentals and real estate. It also further connects our community of 130 million customers who shop the Wal-Mart brand each week.”

Steve Outing and Co. are attempting to “bring experts together to revive newspaper classifieds by finding a new business model relevant in the Internet age.”

You’ll find a mixed number of opinions there whether classifieds can be saved or reinvented, including Bob Wyman’s. Good reading…

CNN is carrying a good read informing those of you interested in a web site exactly what mind set you need to determine what the right cost for a web site ought to be.

“The number-one reason for wildly variable cost quotes, Schwab says, is that many small-business owners don’t have the time or knowledge to put together a “comprehensive requirements document”: something that spells out to the letter the kind of site you need built. Without a detailed requirements list, bidding companies may be coming back with services that aren’t necessary, or leaving out features you’ll need.

Getting a clearer sense of what you need the Web site to do will go a long way toward zeroing in on a true cost. Still, Schwab says, “you are going to be hard-pressed to find a reputable firm to do a website for less than $5,000 – and that’s even if it’s very straightforward.”

Folks, it isn’t that difficult to come up with a reasonably detailed list of requirements spelling out closely what your web site ought to have in/on it. If you first have an idea what the purpose of your site is, based on customer needs, follow that up with a basic list of requirements. Simple things. Things that fill customers’ needs.

Web sites get edited constantly. You can always add later and, imho, your designer should be more than willing and adaptive if you have the right designer.

The fellow in the article – Imad Mouline – has some excellent thoughts. Click through and give it a read.

Okay?

The Markup Validator is a free service by W3C that helps check the validity of Web documents.

Most Web documents are written using markup languages, such as HTML or XHTML. These languages are defined by technical specifications, which usually include a machine-readable formal grammar (and vocabulary). The act of checking a document against these constraints is called validation, and this is what the Markup Validator does.

Validating Web documents is an important step which can dramatically help improving and ensuring their quality, and it can save a lot of time and money. Validation is, however, neither a full quality check, nor is it strictly equivalent to checking for conformance to the specification.

This validator can process documents written in most markup languages. Supported document types include the HTML (through HTML 4.01) and XHTML (1.0 and 1.1) family, MathML, SMIL and SVG (1.0 and 1.1, including the mobile profiles). The Markup Validator can also validate Web documents written with an SGML or XML DTD, provided they use a proper document type declaration.

For consumers, this means they have a dozen or so new ways to look at data in their spreadsheets. Google has put up a gallery of specialty gadgets to choose from. They include gadgets to display data on a pie chart, map, time chart, funnel chart, Gantt chart, pivot table, and on a heat map if it’s geographical data. You can even create interactive charts like those used by Google Finance and for motion charts.

Which is all good stuff – right? It is interesting to me…

What becomes more interesting, as always, is the ending comment to the article;

“With the enhancements, Google is ratcheting up the competition its free Web-hosted apps are giving Microsoft’s desktop productivity suite, which companies pay for.”

When you’re the top dog, you can allow yourself a lot of leeway with the manner in which you conduct yourself and your business. Sometimes you can even thumb your nose at your competition :)
