Thursday is World Book Day and in the UK, every schoolchild is getting a voucher to buy one of the special 1GBP books that have been written. I’m after the Neil Gaiman one , Odd and the Frost Giants. Another one being published has been done by Faber&Faber, called Adventure According to Humphrey. To support this release there’s a fun site called Fun with Humphrey and a great game called NutDings (this one I can play!) that a lovely little timewaster.

As a campaign, this relies far more on PR and promotions than on advertising. Unlike Sport Relief, the site itself does not offer sharable items for book fans to spread the world easily or to interact beyond voting for some books (they’ve had to suspend the forum due to spam). On the whole, charities are way behind the curve when it comes to using social media as they are stuck with what they know raises money and have a strong incentive not to change.
