Asian Qualification (Taekwondo) and World Youth Championship Tournaments Set for November

Washington (dpa) – Former sprint star Marion Jones has reportedly finally ended years of doping denials and could be stripped of Olympic and world championship gold medals as a result.

The International Olympic Committee and the ruling athletics body IAAF said on Friday they were awaiting further details and will investigate if Jones formally admits to doping.

Jones famously won three golds and two bronze at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She also has five world titles 1997-2001.

IOC Statement on Marion Jones

The IOC has learnt about Marion Jones’s intention to plead guilty to lying to federal agents about her use of performance-enhancing substances during her career.

Since 2004, the IOC has had an open file on the BALCO case – it set up a Disciplinary Commission with a view to investigating how the case might have affected Olympic Games’ competitions. Progress to date has been slow due to difficulties in gathering findings. The information that Marion Jones might provide later today may prove to be key in moving this case forward.

Now it makes you think — does cutting corners make everything all worth it? Winning the all those medals would automatically mean an honour that transcends your own lifetime. It’s a sure-fire ticket to textbooks or history books. It’s a legacy you leave behind.

This Marion Jones fiasco is a classic example that the end doesn’t justify the means. Jones held the medal but was she truly an Olympic and World Champion in her sport?

Doping, Medal-stripping and Marion Jones

Meet Shawn Johnson of the USA Gymnastics Team, who also happens to be an Olympic hopeful.

Johnson is a 15 year-old gymnast who trains under coaches Liang Qiao (Chow) and Liwen Zhuang (Li) in West Des Moines, Iowa at Chow’s Gymnastics.

Shawn Johnson’s Gymnastics Career and Achievements

Comfortably tucked under her belt are her wins during the 2007 American Cup (all around champion), 2007 Pan American Games (all around champion), and the 2007 National Championships. Of course, she adds her latest win during the recently concluded 2007 World Championships held in Stuttgart, Germany.

Memorable moments in Shawn’s gymnastics career have been Level 9 balance beam champion, Level 10 Iowa’s Gymnast of the year, Level 10 balance beam champion and making the J.O. National team, and qualifying to Junior International Elite status on her first attempt. (Source)

Clearly, this is one young woman everyone should keep an eye on this coming 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

USA Gymnastics’ Pride, Shawn Johnson

According to Wikipedia, Muay Thai (IPA: [/muai32 tʰai32/]; Thai: มวยไทย) also known as Thai Boxing or The Art of the Eight Limbs is the Thai name for a form of hard martial art practiced in several Southeast Asian countries including Thailand. It is known as Pradal Serey in Cambodia, Tomoi in Malaysia, Muay Lao in Laos and as a similar style called Lethwei in Myanmar. The different styles of kickboxing in Southeast Asia are analogous to the different types of Kung Fu in China or Silat in the Malay peninsula. The Thai military uses a modified form of Muay Thai called Lerdrit.

Team Philippines did the country proud when it clinched two gold, one silver and one bronze medals in the recent Asian Muaythai Championships in Bangalore, India.

Youthful Romnick Pabalate, a 19-year old STI scholar from Negros Oriental, outpointed Thai Jakkapol Khamollakhorn in the 48kg division finals to emerge as champion in his first ever international outing.

Philippine Air Force’s pride Anna Joy, a 2005 Southeast Asian Games Arnis gold medalist, duplicated Pabalate’s feat, beating on points another Thai, Molthiro Vattanapackdee, in the 51kg female class of her initial international stint in muaythai.

Playing coach veteran Rodrigo Asiong of Baguio City settled for the silver medal when he bowed on points to Iranian Hossein Rokhneh in the 75kg division after winning halfway through the final four rounder.

Only the fourth member of the squad, sponsored by Philippine Sports Commission and Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTT), Eugene Toquero of Cebu City failed to reach the finals as a leg injury forced him to forfeit his semifinal match.

Phelps is also the current holder of four Olympic records and four individual and two team world long distance records. During 2004 Athens Games, he won six gold medals and two bronze ones. And currently holding 12 world titles.

How impressive a track record is that?! Goodness.

To be more specific, esp with regards to world/Olympic records, Phelps is the holder of the Olympic 100 and 200m butterfly and 200 and 400m individual medley records, six world long distance records (200m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 200 and 400m individual medley and 4×100m and 4×200m freestyle), this includes the 200m butterfly record set in 2001, which he had broken five times since then! During the World Championships held in Melbourne, Australia in 2007, he actually won seven titles. Arrggh.

In Japan, Michael Phelps beat the world 200m butterfly record, becoming the youngest swimmer ever to set a world record. He went on to Barcelona, Athens, Indianapolis and Montreal – all cities whose swimming pools were to be graced by the talent of this young athlete.
At the Athens 2004 Olympic Games alone, the young record-breaker stood on the podium eight times, and set four Olympic records and one world record. He pulverised his own records or bettered the previous record by one second, like the 200m butterfly (1.31 seconds) and the 400m individual medley (3.50 seconds). (olympic.org)

Now, Phelps is closing on Mark Spitz’s record set during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, i.e. seven gold medals in a single edition of the Games! That’s why it’s not a surprise that he’s currently a favourite for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. I can’t wait how he’ll fare then!
