It appears that Google will be adding some social search functionality to their toolbox. Currently in development in the Google Labs, we’re told it should be coming publicly available soon.

My good friend Dr. Thomas Ho made me aware of a development from Google this evening that I think will be pretty interesting if executed well. And let’s be honest, most of what Google does is done fairly well.

It appears that Google will be adding some social search functionality to their toolbox. Currently in development in the Google Labs, we’re told it should be coming publicly available soon.

The idea is that when you search, there will be results offered from those in your social networks as well. So, if you’re searching for images, you can bet that your friends images on flickr will come up in the results if they fit your search terms.

Looking for something on a hot topic floating around the web? If your friends are talking about it on twitter, then those tweets will show-up in the results as well.

The hooks into your social networks will come from those networks you’ve tied to your own Google Profile. I guess the downside of that, or upside depending on your viewpoint, is that you’ll now have to setup a Google Profile for yourself as well.

All in all a pretty powerful feature to have at your finger tips if you’ve built up a strong and connected social network of friends. I truly believe that taking advantage of the networks we’ve built with each other, trusted friendships and tight integration between our various online presences will become the key to the future of search.

Full reps or not, I don’t think this video is real even though it looks quite authentic as it appears to be shot at a convention and you can hear the plates rattling.

Why is it fake?

First, some of the strongest people in the world can only get 585 one time. We’re talking beasts among men among beasts. Then you have this guy who obviously has a good amount of muscle, but is still relatively thin – especially in comparison to the weight he’s lifting. Although it looks as real as any other video, I am convinced this is a hoax. There’s just no way. My guess is he has plastic weights on the bar. I mean does anybody that weighs 210 or so bench 585 lbs 20 times, pause and then rep 2-3 more? What do you think?

No workout again today as I continue to spend most of my time studying, but I do have a video for you from YouTube I want to critique. Before I start, in fairness to the maker of the videos, its a lot easier to sit on the computer and point out flaws than to be in the gym doing the work, but there is bad form/technique and the creator proceeds to give advice on lifting weights in the comments.

Image: istockphoto

First video had embedding disabled, but here is the link. The first thing I see wrong here is he isn’t meeting the exercise, he’s kind of shying away from the curls to start off with. When you go for a lift, meet it head on. In fact, you its sometimes good to exaggerate the movements to get the full effect.

Second, the weight is way too heavy for this guy. He comes right out of the gate rocking. A lot more bicep and a lot less body is needed. Third, I’m not exactly sure what his last 1/5th reps were going to accomplish, especially sense he rocked with them too. Another huge flaw was the music but hey if Wild Thing gets you going, well there you go.

Always take advice you get from people in the gym with a grain of salt – even trainers and even me. Everybody has their own agenda and opinions and some people don’t even know what they’re talking about. Its disappointing a lot of teens on YouTube want to start lifting weights and are looking to these videos on guidance and the people making the videos are hopped on steroids, don’t know what they’re doing, and/or are creating false impressions for beginners. There are even some weight lifting videos from kids 13, 14 and younger which is unfortunate because its really too early for them to be hitting the iron.

I think any age before 15 should be engaged in activities to be physically fit, but weight training should be left out of the equation. At the very most, weight training should be very, very light at this age.

It’s that time of year again. Time to spend some hours at the park watching your kids play baseball and other sports right? That’s exactly what I did today and it was absolutely gorgeous here in Indianapolis. This is the second season my son will be playing baseball, but it’s the first year I’ve been able to get video of him and his team playing on my Flip Ultra video camera.

Image: TheFlip.com

It’s absolutely perfect for this kind of stuff and came in really handy today. I was able to quickly get clips of each of his team members batting that I’m sure their families will enjoy seeing once I get them posted to Vimeo, my preferred online sharing location for video. The quality is just so much better than what you get on YouTube.

The Flip is just handy for pulling out of your pocket and grabbing a quick video of something you’d like to remember or share with others. In my opinion it’s even handier than my digital camera most of the time. It’s almost single button operation allows you to quickly pull it out, turn it on and almost immediately start recording.

One area I think it could be improved on though is the ability to choose more locations to upload your video from the Flip software you use to manage the files. Vimeo isn’t one of the locations currently specified, so I have to do stuff a bit manually.
