Childhood Games

I have two older sisters, so being the baby of the family, I was the one that was always picked on. The both of them are very close in age, so they always played together, and had similar friends, and I was left to be alone. What did that make me? A tattle tail of course We all know the babies of the family are tattle tails – we can’t help it. We wanted to be on someones side, so if the older siblings wouldn’t let us in, we had to go to the parents.

Now I only had two older sisters, no brothers, so I didn’t get pushed or shoved around or anything, it was only verbal abuse. You may think that’s not a big deal, but it is. Verbal abuse can be the worst abuse out there! I used to practice and repeat the saying “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” That line is BS.

So what was I taught then to help me out? Certain things like the shadow game where I”m sure you are all very familiar with. When someone says something to you you repeat exactly what they said back to them.

“Franca get me some water”

“Franca, get me some water”

“Hey, don’t copy me”

“Hey, don’t copy me”

“Stop!”

“Stop!”

“Seriously!!”

“Seriously!!”

And so on…

That is one way to defend yourself however not only are you now the tattle tail but you are the annoying bratty little sister.

One of my favorite lines has to do when someone name calls you.You simply say back to them, “I know you are but what I am.” This one has been around for a while.

“You’re a tattle tail.”

“I know you are but what am I?”

“No – YOU are a tattle tail”

“I know YOU are but what am I?”

This one actually got me rattled up the most. I tried to use it on my sisters thinking i was all cool and finally got them back…Until this happened.

Sister1 – “You are a brat”

Me – “I know you are but what amI?”

Sister1 – “I know you are but what am I?”

Me – ????

What just happened there – this NOT fair.  Mooommmyyyy…..
