Are Geeks Cool?

Is it just me or are geeks becoming popular these days?! Ok so what really is a geek then. Someone who wears glasses and carries a calculator in his shirt and a pen in his pocket? Snorts when they laugh and then push up their glasses on their nose? That’s one way of looking at them I guess – In Saved By The Bell years!

Geeks these days are cool! They very often still wear glasses, maybe some of them wear tight jeans, but they actually are the ones getting the girls! If you are a geek girl you hide it a little more. My sister just got married a few years ago. I love him to death but I’m going to be honest, he is a bit of a geek!

I say this to his face all the time so I’m not going be hind his back or anything, but ya, I would consider him to be a geek. What does he do? He is a stem cell researcher. And not only that, he is a brilliant one. He loves his job, and he wears glasses. Who does he marry? My sister. Well, she is a geek too. She wears the glasses, and she is 29 years old and still in school. She can’t get enough of the books.

During Christmas time, we all still make our Christmas lists to give to Santas (ok, I guess just that makes us all geeks alone!) but mine includes clothes, games, toys, electronics, gift cards, etc. What’s on hers? The latest psychology addition hard cover, 600 pages. What’s on her husbands? The latest stem and biology hard cover book ‘Best Scientists Theories” or something like that.

The funniest part is that they are an adorable, happy, good looking couple. Two geeks in a pod! All my girl friends have crushes on him, and all my guy friends have crushes on my sister. So what is this telling me? Should I stop trying to be ‘cool’ and start trying to be ‘geek’?

Oh How Video Games Have Changed

It doesn’t seem that long ago when playing video games only meant one thing. The big heavy, bulky gray box that had one simple button. Power. Ok there were two buttons, power and reset. It also came with only two controllers and the controllers only had up down, left right, start, select, ‘a’ and ‘b’. This was called Nintendo, how it all started.

When you hear that people are playing video games now a days, options are endless. PSP, PSP 2, PSP 3 (Is there a third these days?) XBOX 360, Wii, Sega (that’s a little bit more of a ghetto game these days as well) and I’m probably missing a ton others. You never only have just 2 controllers and game options are endless. What you see below is what I call a blast from the past and probably would never be seen played again unless it’s as a joke.

When playing old school Nintendo, you were either playing Donkey Kong, or Mario Brothers. Looking back at Donkey Kong now and having familiar memories from this shirt, has made me realize how tedious Donkey Kong actually must have been. Level after level moving up a ladder and all the way to the right. Then up another ladder and all the way to the left. You continue this pattern on and on while jumping barrels in between. How do you beat the game? I have no idea. Is it as satisfactory as killing monsters? Probably not. But was it fun? You bet it was.

Not As Easy As It Sounds

I have a phone, that has a camera, so I have a camera phone right? Wrong. It’s a little more complicated than that. Or is it?

So my dad just this past weekend found out that his camera has video. “Hey guess what! Did you know my camera has video? I can take a video – with sound!” No way Dad…you’re kidding! He only has the exact same model as mine but the upgraded version! He has had it for almost four years! How is that possible. I know we are a new generation, but I just don’t understand how hard it is for parents these days to understand the simplest of things!

I know no one really ever reads the manuals but there is a little big of logic involved. You see the picture of a video camera? Well that normally means that if you switch to that mode, you can take video! Easy right? So he finally got the video down pat, but can’t for the life of him work out how to play it back to him. So who shows him? I do. And now he thinks I am genius. He thinks I am Ms. Technology girl.

Want to feel smart and important? Go show your parents how to turn on a computer or if they already know how to do that, show them how to copy and paste. They will be amazed and think you are brilliant.

Geometric Tees

I really like that Symbolika’s tees all have a very similar style that is unique to them. All of their designs seem to be based off of geometric shapes and definitely remind me of middle school math class (just a lot more complex).

They also have an awesome drag and drop shopping cart… which is always cool.

I haven’t. But who ever designed this tee definitely has.

If you really love science… I just found your t-shirt. I have a lot of friends that should probably wear this all the time.

What I find really interesting about this science tee is that you can get it without the text if you want.

There are plenty of shirts out there that I’d gladly wear if they just removed the text. I’m happy to see a tee company that understands this.
