Benitez leaving, Show me the money, Sack the Board; are some Liverpool fans getting a bit carried away?

June 12, 2007 by admin

A quick trawl of the boards will show you that some Liverpool fans are getting twitchy.  They’ve heard rumours that Rafa is sick of not being backed by the board, that he is leaving if he doesn’t get an instant transfer kitty, that the “promised” huge transfer investment will not be forthcoming, and there are even those who are claiming they have been let down by Hicks and Gillett.

But hang on a minute lads, Tom and George have only just moved in.  Give them a decent honeymoon period before you start having a go at them, afterall you’re not Newcastle are you?

No Rafa hasn’t bought anyone yet, but that doesn’t mean he’s not active.  Most of his quoted targets have been in the Spanish league, which still has another week to go.  One of his prime targets who is not in La Liga has been very publically seen down at Melwood and even if Henry doesn’t decide on a move to Anfield, at least it gives you some idea of Liverpool’s ambition and how high they are setting their sights.

Also there was never going to be a massive pot at the end of Tom and George’s rainbow, the transfer fees were always going to come from the club rather than the owners, so you can forget about an Abramovichesque £300m loan from them.

So where are all the funds going to come from?  How are Liverpool going to compete?  The same way that Manchester United competes, by continuing to grow the club, buy increasing the revenues in every department, building a massive new stadium, and most of all, by treating the club as any other successful business.

The big name players will come, but not all at once.  Yes it might take some time before you win the League title again, but if you do then at least you can say that you didn’t buy it….

*thanks for your opinions Mr Hicks*

  2. Ryan says:

Best words I have read about this whole situation. The transfer budget is unclear, but we need to be realistic and give the organization a chance. We are not all of a sudden going to be signing every major name out there, and we know Rafa has a knack for findings diamonds in the rough.

Hell, if we would have won or drawed the games we should have last year away we would have been right around where Chelsea and Man U were in points. With a winger and a striker we could come very close to a title even next year. We need to win the games we know we should win.

  3. Cool hand luck says:

I seen an interview with Tom hicks last week on skysports news and he said that there would a big transfer this week, Fingers crossed

  4. Frank says:

Nice post. We do need to be patient. I never expected a Chelski like transfer season and I suspect that the clubs we are trying to buy from thought it would be. Tom Hicks was taught a lesson by the whole A-Rod incident (baseball player who got a ten year $250 million contract from old Tom who now plays for the Yankees but still gets half of his money from Hicks)

  5. Ciaran Mc Cormack says:

Look because we haven’t bought anybody yet doesn’t mean anything. Yes Benitez has been very public about the amount of time that it is taking for these tranfers to get through. He has also been very public about who he wasn’t to by:
Gabi Milto has been on his wish list since Benitez got here.
Henry seems to be visiting a few friends at Melwood, but unfortunatly can’t see him coming here.
Micheal Owen has 9 Million pounds as a buy out clause.
Tevez and Eto’o we have been priced out of. Maluda has been talking about his “desire” to join a Prmiership club, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea have been keeping tabs.
David Villa has been another long lasting Benitez fancy although cant see it happening.
Torres apparently has “You’ll Never Walk Alone” tatooed on his arm! Although not sure if he is Benitez most wanted forward.
Amuiri has also been linked with Liverpool from Italy along with Trezaguat.
Recently it has been Diogo Milito and Forlan. Although Forlan’s hopes of joining us took a set back recently when his agent denied all reports about him leaving Vilareall. That has been the best transfer news coming out of Liverpool recently, we are not buying Forlan!
While Simao and Dani Aleves have both be on Rafa’s list for a while and possible moves are continuosly surfacing….
Personaly cant beat the youth players we have been buying!! lol

  6. Clarky says:

It’s now three weeks since Rafa said he was fed up with talk talk, but still no action. If we are realsitic we were never going to get Eto and unlikely to get Villa or Torres. Would players of their undoubted quality guarantee 20-25 goals a season in the Premiership. That allied to their cost surely presents a case for tried and tested players with Premiership experience. Too many players from the Spanish league have failed. I believe we should also be looking for additions from the Dutch, German and French leagues as well as our own. Bent would be a very good addition with proven success at half Villa’s cost. Plus it is going to take a lot more than a winger and centre forward to win the Premiership. To even contemplate starting the season without a top quality centre half and at least one other quality fullback and it will be third or fourth again.

  7. magnumopus says:

Personally I would like to see Rafa bring in Quaresma for the wing, Tevez for a striker, and, Milito for a center back. Anybody else would be icing on our cake.

  8. Danny says:

Everybody seems to forget that Benitez and the board prior to the takeover did not want every other club in Europe thinking we were an easy touch in the transfer market and spend over the odds for a player.I think personally they have been very shrewd in fooling everyone that we have no money and could now get the players we want without clubs paying more than there worth,Let the other teams make the first bid and see if we will step in and make that player ours!!!

  9. trader says:

Sack, I can honestly say this is the fairest post you have ever written on Liverpool. Maybe youre not as bitter as I thought, although I would rather you have had a go at us so we can another heated debate haha

  10. Cheese says:

I’m sure you’re well aware that a quick trawl through the boards will pick up the opinions of the kids, armchairs, retards and maybe a deluded few ‘new fans’ who have the attitiude ‘I pay my money i’m entitled to boo’. I can assure you that no self respecting, match going Liverpool fans have any doubts over Rafa, George and Tom, Stevie G, and the immediate future of LFC. We are all sleeping soundly, confident that in the coming years we will be in a position of offer sustained challenge to the current top two.

  11. gab says:

Ive criticised many a post here by Sack, however he’s hit the nail right on the head. Stick to the Valium Sack, your a much nicer guy on your medication!!!!!!!!!
    Nice one

  12. Dan(not that other cunt!) says:

At last! nice to see a bit of level headedness instead of the complete drivel being spouted by the gutter press. We all want to see some big names at Anfield, but who wants to buy the league like the Chelski scum? Not me. Be patient, number 19 is coming!!!

  13. The Dawg says:

4 words i need to say about this situatoin:

    “All talk, no action”.

  14. Sack the Juggler says:

Trader / Gab, I’m always a fair and nice guy – medicated or otherwise ;)

  15. jonas says:

    you red shite

  16. Cliff says:

Something’s very wrong with this article….bloody wrong! Nobody’s expecting a Roman style buying habit. What liverpool fans want is to win the title for the coming season! Nothing shld be less! For the past years, Rafa’s been working extremely hard to help liverpool. But the board + rick parry is too slow, too slack and too incompetent. Give them 5 bloody tasks, and they can only deliver 2, how can this work out in the long term?? How can you tell the fans that they need to wait a couple years more for the title?? It’s not as if you can definitely get the title a few years later. COS’ Rafa will not be around to wait for this unambitious attempt!!

It is bloody obvious that the front men are not firing enough and there is lack of creativity and explosive attacking options in the midfield. There is also a need for more defensive backups and options…..BUT there is no need to have new worldclass options for every freaking department so there’s no need to spend loads of cash! All we need is a world class striker and a worldclass creative winger. Selling the fringe players away will more than cover the cost to bring in these players and yet buy a few ‘B’ class players with outstanding potentials and develop them into someone like Agger. So WAKE UP, it is getting more competitive by the seconds for every top club in the premiership! We’re sick and tired of slow and incompetent management! If Rafa leaves, I can truly understand why.

  17. barry stephens says:

Well I am glad that all of the above are so level headed and down to earth regarding Raffa being told he has to sell before he can buy. Seems familiar, doesn’t it? To go from E’to, Tevez, Villa and Torres to Forlan, Milito and Owen is more than a come down, it is a slap in the face for our manager.
While Alex ferguson has brought in three quality players in a week we are still twiddling our thumbs wondering whether we have to sell Bellamy in order to bring back Michael owen and if we did would that improve the squad? I doubt it!
The promised funds of Gillett and Hicks, while maybe not realistically in the hundred million pound range, but enough to bring in two or three top quality players, has still not been put on the table. I doubt it ever will. The buyout of our beloved club was achieved by G+H taking a 500 million pound loan out from the Bank of Scotland and every penny LFC make in the next five years (assuming G+ H haven’t turned the club over by then) will go to servicing that debt.
Do the above posts realize that Gillett and Hicks know absolutely nothing about football and even less about Liverpool and the passion the fans have for their club. American fans are not like British fans and a lot less that Liverpool fans.
The takeover was purely a business investment made with other people’s money. The ‘Gordon Gecko’s’ (’Wall Street’ for those who don’t know) of sport’s franchises and leverageds buyouts. So fellas while you are enjoying your sobriety at the lack of transfer activity there will come a time to be worried – very worried. If there is little or no money available now, how much do you reckon there will be next year?
Raffa made it very clear to the new owners after Athens that he wanted to know his ‘budget’ early so he could have more time with the new squad before the start of the new season. G+H reneged on their false promises and it was only yesterday that he was finally told the truth – although what the ‘truth’ is is open to conjecture as there are so many versions of it. I think it is safe to say that Raffa would have liked to have been kissed first!
A man of such integrity and honesty will not relish being made a fool of by a couple of American ‘entrepreneurs’ though I could use more colourful words to describe them. Opportunists is apt but a little lame. However one cannot blame G+H entirely, after all that is what they do – make money! The ultimate blame must surely go to David Moore’s and his lackey Rick Parry for brokering such a poor deal for LFC. (’I only have the club’s best interests at heart’) What a load of bollocks! If that were the case he would have sold to Steve Morgan years ago. If that had happened we wouldn’t have to mortgage our future on a new stadium – Morgan would have built it without taking out a loan!
I personally don’t believe Raffa will leave – but I bet he has thought about it – even seriously. You know the old saying ‘keep your options open’! With Real Madrid and possibly Barcelona knocking on the door, it must be difficult to resist, especially when you’ve been shafted by your new bosses. And make no mistake my friends, no matter how long you think the new guys should get to settle in – he has been shafted – without a lubricant!
Settle in – holy shit – they have only spent a few days in Liverpool since they took over. Most communication is done by phone to the States and Canada!
If those who take the time to read this article come to the conclusion that I am very sceptical when it comes to our new owners, you would be one hundred per cent correct. Just for the record – my scepticism started as soon as I found out Hicks and Gillett borrowed 500 million pounds on future earnings from the Bank of Scotland to expedite the buyout. Give the Russian his due, at least he used his own money.
As Ronald Reagan once said ‘trust – but with verification’. It remains to be seen whether the above posts blind faith in our new owners will be verified.
Personally – I doubt it! Let me see the money first!

    Dear Sack The Juggler

When i noticed the post is by you, i told myself ” Here he goes again, picking on Liverpool. But this time, you were perfect, with regards to the owners, not buying the title, etc

    To liverpool fans,

it could be a case of “Acting poor, to prevent inflated transfers”

so i would wait and see if rafa was really given the cash

  19. King Kong says:

If you ask me, I think the whole situation is like a smokescreen to tell sellers that Rafa doesn’t have a large budget and be realistic with their numbers.

Even Rafa had large amounts, doesn’t mean we have to brag and let ppl quote us exorbitant amount – see Chelsea and you’ll understand. If Chelsea buys anyone, the price tag will go up 50%. We don’t want to be like Chelsea.

So this “quarrel and hand grenade” is really created to help us in the market. I think huge things are happening behind the scenes.

Stadium, core players, linkups with other youth centres, all this points to one thing – things are going behind the scenes and the press is upset, so are other fans.

Just be patient. PS: I hope we don’t get Forlan lol

  20. Bluesboyjoe says:

I don’t get why so many of our fans seem to think they know what is going on in the boardroom. You whinge about us going for targets like Forlan yet he has not been suggested as a target by the club. Furthermore his agent says there has been no contact. Why are people stupid enough to believe everything they read in the papers? It’s ridiculous. What has changed since we were being linked with the likes of Eto’o? Nothing other than the fact that the redtops need new stories to print. Hicks and Gillet are the worst owners ever apparently. They aren’t backing Rafa. They LIED to us. For all we know they’re helping Rafa engineer a huge bid. Sack is absolutely right. Great article!

  21. Rich says:

Any of you fans that are panicking – Get a Grip! If things were as bad as the media are painting it Rafa could have walked out already, and considering how tempted and ultimately inevitable his move to Real Madrid will be one day, he’s not gone yet because he obviously feels he has a job to do at Liverpool before he goes anywhere.
If I’m honest I got a little tense once Man Utd and others started making their signings cos I was excited by the fact we have got this big investment in the club this year. But then I thought “When it really comes down to it, I know fuck all about buying players compared to Rafa or the board, so why panic?!” The tension is cranked up by the media cos they know how much money is being invested and the best way to sell their papers is by being able to splash on their back pages ‘Eto’o to Liverpool’ or the likes. So because we are being a bit patient the media starts going in the opposite direction saying there is unrest cos that’s more likely to sell a paper than no news to report – and that’s what the media cannot bear, not having anything to report. Give Rafa and the board some time and space and we’ll judge them on their results rather than judging them on nothing at all!

  22. rafa says:

i think what was clever about United buying was that it was all done in a short period of time so who they were negotiating with could not leverage off their other purchases. i expect that Liverpool are doign the same thing, and since most of our targets are in the spanish league it doesn’t make sense for us to splash out on someone like Malouda when a Spanish team can point to that and add 5 million to their asking price for a player. i would expect that we will add some squad players or young playes in the short term to ensure some depth. then there will be a flurry of activiate as we sign 3 worls class players. United had similar finincial committments (actually worse) but they know they have to spend to get into the champions league and remain popular in Asia and potenitally the US. i still have faith in the board to spend the moeny and Rafa to not spend foolishly. i think we will see 5 players out and 8 players in before the season starts with a net spend of 35million in fees plus salary (which is an important cost. extending the wage bill with greater depth in the sqaud is a very real cost).
