Do Liverpool fans really prefer Manchester United to Chelsea?

January 19, 2007 by admin

Liverpool fans were hoping to be challenging for the Premiership title this year, and if it were not for their disastrous away form early in the season then they would have undoubtedly been up there.

But as they are not, then do they really want to see their old rivals win it over the young pretenders Chelsea?

Sir Alex Ferguson seems to think so and in a recent interview has said; “With Chelsea not endearing themselves to everyone in the game, it’s strange that people, even Liverpool fans, are saying to me ‘I hope you win the League’, which is amazing, but I think that Liverpool supporters will always recognise what good football teams are.”

So is Fergie right? or is he just playing mind games with Mourinho again?

In many ways Liverpool fans have always appreciated good football, but I doubt that sways their thinking regarding their old rivals.

And with Liverpool about to receive a significant cash injection from Dubai International Capital (DIC), is it fair for their fans to criticise Chelsea for “buying success”.

Personally I suspect that Liverpool fans still harbour a hope of winning the title this season, and either they are playing mind games with Fergie, or Fergie is just playing mind games with Mourinho.  And while Chelsea fans may feel hard done by Liverpool fans, I’m sure they’d still rather have the Premiership titles than their support. Which just leaves the Manchester United fans, who probably don’t really care what the Liverpool fans say…..

I Don’t know what liverpool fans spoke to fergie, i would perfer see chelsea win it well before United, and everyone liverpool fan i’ve spoken said without hesitation would perfer Chelsea

  2. Mart-e-Gee says:

A tie at the end of 38 games…then Chelski & the Scum out to the car park for last man standing hard core cage match…..what a good idea for a new reality tv show!!!…Hate them both

  3. Ian says:

Myself and most Liverpool fans I know cant stand the mancs, and would much rather see Chelsea win it. I really don’t know what Slur Alex has been smoking this week!!!

  4. Borat says:

I hope ManUtd win the League……………………………………NOT.

  5. Tony says:

I prefer ManU to Chelsea, without a doubt.
We have more in common with Utd. What they have achieved they have done because of many years of doing the right things. You have to respect that.

  6. James says:

who cares what the Liverpool fans think any way, they’re gonna win nothing this year or the next! unless they steal the silverware, the robbin’ svoucers!

  7. James says:

Liverpool fans wanting Manchester United fans to win the league over Chelsea ?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never.

I’ve been a Liverpool fan all my life as have the vast majority of my mates and I would never want Manchester United to win anything over anyone else, and neither would my friends.

If not us then it’s anyone but Manchester United. Fergie is, as usual, talking out of his backside.

  8. Roxx666 says:

Brought up a red in Bootle, Liverpool.
There is no way on this earth I would prefer Scummy united to win anything over any other team.
Chelsea, the great pretenders (champions league winners, your having a laugh!) – good to see them knocked off their perch but by United! argh!!!
Won’t be long before we are back where we belong.. mighty reds to rocket up to number 19…
One last thing – David Villa Sánchez for Anfield (The new Owen)…
    Mighty reds walk on…

  9. RedLester says:

I have to disagree, I’ve been a Liverpool fan for 20 years and as much as it pains me to admit it, I’d prefer Man.Scum to win the league than Chelsea. The reasons are simple:

Rivalry and geographic locality aside, one of the main reasons I hate Man.U so much is down to their player and manager’s behavior, or behavior in the past. It has to be said that Moaninho has surpassed this with flying colours since he arrived. To generalise, his players are cheating diving scumbags and he encourages them so he’s no better. He’ll find any angle or advantage (whether it’s cheating or not) to get ahead and it seems no blow is too low in his perverse desire for success. In contrast, as much as it pains me, Fergie has actually done pretty well this season, both in getting the most from aging players and in actually getting his team playing good football.

Most importantly though if Chelsea win everything again it’ll prove that all you need to conquer our beautiful league is a big s*it load of cash. AND that you can do it comfortably with unsportsmanlike conduct and not an ounce of dignity, grace or class and THAT certainly does not deserve anyone’s respect.

I hate Man.U as much as the next Red, but if we are to save any vestige of the things that make English football great, hard work, a never-say-die attitude, good football and sportsmanlike conduct, Chelsea must be stopped.

It’s all very well going on about how much Man.U is hated among Liverpool fans but it doesn’t make you a more dedicated Red to say so, abhorrence (as well as respect) needs to be earned and at the current moment, I believe Chelski and Moaninho are far more deserved.

  10. Gunaldo says:

any team but Man utd….. no way any Lfc fans will be happy to “that” team to win… no..no… no to man utd….

  11. Rob says:

As a Chelsea fan all I care about if we don’t win is that the Arse don’t win the EPL.

I would prefer Man Utd before the Pool, but never Arse (or Leeds).

    A. Whinger was having a laugh with SGE getting him to take Theo Whatalot to the World Cup. So much for helping the country that pays his wage.

  12. MIco says:

‘Migkty reds to rocket up to number 19′?
Only if Keegan’s done a song again. I’m a United fan, raised in Manchester and I’ve always wanted a northen team to win, never a London team! That is despite the obvious rivalry between us and Liverpool.

Another point is that I have always respected the great Liverpool teams. The age of internet forums and blogs has given vent to a minority of idiots proclaiming hate for eachother. Dislike for eachothers success is healthy for the rivalry between us but there should always remain respect for those competing and for the supporters who give so much to both clubs. Try and remember that lads (from both of these great northern cities) before giving vent to hate and pedjudice that has it’s basis in some sort of hand-me down tribal brainwashing and doesn’t belong in modern sport and social culture! Doesn’t mean I can’t get pissed off if Liverpool do win the league, but it would be with respect and aknowledgement of the achievement!
Good luck in the future for both (northern)teams!

  13. Robin says:

Do I detect a hint of jealousy…. surely not !

I take it that Redlester will turn down the investment from Dubai, the new stadium, the players it will bring, and the only realistic opportunity of winning the Premier league !

  14. Stevo says:

Born and bred in Liverpool and a red all my life, I’m really torn on this this season.

I hate united as much as anyone but there has got to be a grudging respect for what they have acheived in the last few years. Fairs fair, they went about it in the right way playing some nice stuff.

As for Chelscum, they have no pedigree and no history and their fans have this new found arrogance that I can’t stand. The way the club goes about its business stinks as does the style of football they play. They don’t deserve a legacy and for that reason, I think (I can’t believe I’m sayin this) I’d rather Moan United won the league this year.

I feel a bit sick now.

  15. Mr Onion says:

Opinion will be divided and clearly those pool fans who feel able to talk to sir Alex must respect what he has achieved.

I’m a pool fan and it pains me to say it, out of the two teams, Utd play the better football and make less enemies with diving and the soap opera that surrounds the club (as they have no history?).

But Chelski, do remind me of Utd in the 90’s, when they would pressure the referee at every decision and some would say, they play crap for 88 minutes and throw everyone forward at the end to win 2-0.

What would be more satisfying for me this season, would be to progress to 2nd place at the expense of the blues. I don’t care what the media says, we were never going to win the league this year, but with investment afoot, we have a good chance over the next two seasons.

Man U are already a part of football history and probably desrvedly so. I don’t want Chelsea to be considered the same way we are in years to come with a dynasty they don’t deserve.

I feel a bit sick now.

  17. the famous gcp says:

It takes talent and skill to win the premiership. Chelsea haven’t performed well this season, i should know being a season ticket holder, but we are still hanging on in there and clear of Arsenal and Liverpooh. Sheva, ballack and SWP have all failed to deliver this season which proves that money doesn’t buy titles. We won the league twice in a row with supposedly lesser players than the above and played superb football during those two seasons. This year hasn’t been the same admittedly, without the likes of Terry, Joey Cole, Cech, Robben and so but we are not going to whinge on and on about it like the bitter scousers week in and week out. United deserve to be top, they are playing well and fair play to them. As for Liverpooh, they have failed to challenge for England’s top slot for God knows how many years now. Their champions league win makes the competition a bit of a joke to be honest. We would take the premiership all day, in front of the chumps league. We are not bothered who hates who more, we have our rivalries closer to home. Carefree.

  18. Liverpool Fan says:

Fergie is nasty strategic man and his most hate team is Liverpool, none doubts about that. What he said, Liverpool fan should be careful and think that the best we can do this season is gel together and let us bless Rafa and the players do the best for the remaining matches.

  19. James Ellis says:

All you supposed Reds who want Scumchester United to win the league should hang your heads in shame. I don’t care what excuse you come up with, whether it be respect for what they’ve achieved or whatever, it’s a disgrace.

Of course the Scum have done well, you can’t deny it, and yes, credit where credit’s due, but why the f**k would you want THEM to win the title. Chelsea are a here today gone tomorrow football side, the ultimate rich man’s plaything. How many times have you got hooked on Championship Manager for a few months then lost interest with it. Thei will happen to Abramovich some day and Scum will still be there, winning stuff.

NEVER will I or any true Red want the Scum to win anything. You lot have shown your true colours with your comments, and it’s not Red.

  20. Stevo says:

    James Ellis

You are missing the point mate.

I’m 28 so this year I’ve been going to Anfield for 20 years. I’m a season ticket holder, travel to some away games in the UK and in Europe as do my dad and sister so I think that says more about my ‘true colours’

Moan United already have a place in Football history alongside ourselves and all the other great European sides who on the whole achieved what they did with style and grace. There is nothing we can do about that now.

I don’t want Chelsea to get anywhere near our 18 championships or 5 european cups because personally I don’t think they deserve to be held in anywhere near the same regard as we are. Especially all the Chelscum fans who suddenly come out of the woodwork. The have to advertise their champions league tickets on the radio and the tube for f@cks sake.

  21. the famous gcp says:

I don’t get all of the ‘no history’ crap the scousers keep harping on about. We have won trophies in europe and also won all of the domestic silverware – thats why we used to take 10,000 fans to away games when we were sh*t. One ground, one name, 100 years. Thats our history and we are proud of it. Champions.

  22. RedLester says:

    Comments for all of you:

Robin – it’s nothing to do with jealousy. It’s mostly to do with the behavior of the Chelsea manager and players. I’d be supporting the Reds through gritted teeth if our manager whined and moaned about every decision after every game, and it’d be just as hard if our players dived around like they’d be shot left right and center. Look at John Terry for example, England’s captain. What sort of example is he setting with his antics at Chelsea? For the most part Liverpool managers and players are realists who like to avoid controversy, bullshit and non-football related matters. It was Stevie G who came out after the world cup and said that we need to stop bigging ourselves up convinced we’re going to win it and start performing instead of talking. John Terry on the other hand, said he was ‘flabberghasted’ that they didn’t win it as he really thought it was our year. Based on what performances John?

Stevo – you’re spot on mate, your opinions pretty much reflect how I’m feeling.

James Ellis – I may be being a bit harsh here mate but you sound like the sort of fan that gives others a bad name. There’s no point running around aimlessly holding on to age old grudges or rivalries if the reason they originated in the first place isn’t as apparent any more. Sure we’ll always hate Man.U, but to say you’ll always hate them more than any other team on this planet no matter what happens is a narrow minded thuggish mentality that doesn’t promote worthy opinion.

the famous gcp: You’ve won ‘trophies’ in Europe, that’ll be a couple of cup winners cup medals then? And what, 7 or 8 domestic honours? That’s not a lot for 100 years of history mate. And you’re in no position to crow about fan support either, Mourinho himself recently moaned about the dispassion of your fans. Stick up for your team if you like but don’t try and take us on based on these sorts of claims. It’s like taking a chopstick to a frikkin’ gun fight for christ sakes.

  23. Mr Onion says:

I think the history aspect refers to repeated winning of the top titles – ie the league title and the premier European competition.

How can the CL be a joke if you have all the top European clubs in there? It was probably formed that way to stop the alleged breakaway European league that was talked about some years back.

So you have all the top teams, they usually come through their groups, they play each other and ultimately one team triumphs. How can that be a joke?

I admit, sometimes a good run in Europe can lead to worse domestic form.

But consider this, the top two clubs in the EPL are the richest – is that coincidence?

Liverpool, as far as challenging for the title, have suffered in recent years – hence the managerial changes Souness, Evans, Houllier and now Rafa. We’ve seen that Rafa is a top manager who likes a fully match fit SQUAD of players – who knows what he could do with a bit more financial backing.

Utd and Chelski should be looking over their shoulders for the next few seasons.

  24. SF Gooner says:

As an Arsenal fan I’d rather Arsenal won it. The rest of you can fuck off ;)

  25. thefamousgcp says:

Red Lester – Ive been going to Chelsea for 30 years and have never had a problem with Liverpool or United’s history. You have great ones that you are rightly proud of. Are you telling me that i cant crow on about our history and supporters because it’s not as good as yours? Don’t be a mug, it’s supporters like us, that have stood on the shed in the pissing rain week in and week out, whilst playing crap football that makes Chelsea what it is mate. Ok, Chelsea can’t match your history (for the time being at least) but hey, why do you (especially Liverpool supporters) keep going on about our lack of history? Does it bother you that much? We are proud of our history and entitled to be. You have the likes of West Ham (no offence hammers)who have virtually won sweet FA and no-one rattles on about their lack of history – i suppose it’s because they are no threat to you, unlike ourselves? PS Its funny how you view your fluke Chumps league win differently to us. Come on mate, everyone disconnected with Liverpool can’t take you lot seriously anymore. In the eighties, when you were a good team, fair enough – but you really aren’t a particularly good side anymore. And if You do beat Chelsea this afternoon don’t go on about it for too long, it will ony give you three points, not a title.

  26. Rich says:

I have to say unless Liverpool win the title – I couldn’t really give a toss who wins it – so long as their play deserves it. Man Utd have built their legacy, and thanks to Fergie now have their most succesful era in their history. Can’t wait to see what happens when he goes! But that won’t be for a while so I’m not holding my breath. In other words Man Utd have earnt their success.
Chelsea, or more specifically their fans – will continue to take stick whether they take titles or not – until more teams are on a level playing field financially. No-one can deny the influence of a big fat cheque book on a teams success, whether its used for buying players, stadiums, or refs in some instances (oooh – contraversial!) But Man Utd became successful before the money rolled in. As did Arsenal. As did Liverpool. The success attracted the investments, and then it was upto the board, manager and players how long they could maintain or build on that initial success. That’s where I take my hat off to Fergie, he’s the best the premiereship has seen in years. Unfortunately where Chelsea are concerned its all far too much like some rich boy’s wet dream to buy a team near the river in the capital and have a bit of a muck around to see what he can do. Yes Chelsea won a few cup competitions, and prior to Roman walking through the front door the only title taken was how many years ago? You won’t get the respect that comes with winning the title for many years to come. I’m sure you’d say Liverpool may have the same problem should the Sheikh take over – but we already have – and still have THE most successful club in England. That’s probably why we still go on about it. Sure it’d be amazing to win the league this year or next year or the year after. But we’re progressing, and I know it will come.

As for the bell end who said our champions league win made a mockery of the competition………which of your teams’ games is hailed as one of the best ever by the fans of other teams, including your most bitter rivals?

    Exactly……..

  27. nik says:

Without a doubt. Both Liverpool and Manchester United are the two of the biggest and most sussessfull football clubs in the history of english football.
Even though we don’t get on and dislike each other. No right-thinking Liverpool or Manchester United fan cannot argue about what both clubs have done for english football.Trophy-wise anyway.
Plus both clubs have suffered terrible tradedies.
Manchester United with Munich and Liverpool with Hillsbrough.
So there is some respect between Liverpool and Manchester United.
A lot of mancs I know, and who I have spoke too, claim that there is more hatred towards leeds fans than Liverpool fans.
I don’t think that there is a Man Utd fan from around england I have met or known that has had anything nice to say about leeds fans.
