I’m Glad Ledley Is Going To Miss The World Cup

I’ll make no bones about it. I don’t want to see Spurs top players going to the World Cup and running the risk of getting injured playing for a country I have no affiliation with whatsoever. By that I mean any country other than my own and with Northern Ireland being a little light on Premiership players these days, never mind Tottenham players, (and the fact that Northern Ireland have four more years to get their qualification heads on) I had a little smile when I heard that Ledley King could miss the World Cup.

Don’t get me wrong, as far as I’m concerned Ledley King is the best centre back in the English game at the minute, his skill, power and reading of the game are light years ahead of players like Rio Ferdinand and S*l C*mpbell and he would be very deserving of a place in England’s starting 11 to show what he’s made of on the biggest stage in international football.

Doesn’t mean I want him to though. When Northern Ireland aren’t playing then Tottenham are my main concern and if Ledley comes back in August fully rested and with no distractions over the summer bar a fortnight in Magaluf then I think he’ll be in better shape for Spurs Champion’s League campaign next season (fingers crossed).

The club vs country divide is a hotly contested one but it becomes a very one sided argument when the country involved isn’t your own and for me, when it’s England, club wins every time.

Well as an English Spurs fan I’m gutted, fuck Northern Ireland

  2. oooooooooooooo says:

Wonder if Ledley thinks the same?

Wouldn’t it be better for him to come back from Germany thinking really good about himself?

  3. Martin says:

You are a absolute idiot! Ledley has had a immense season and deserves his chance to go to the wc for England. I am appalled at this article. Pure Idiocy

  4. David says:

If you’re not english and don’t support our English players, why support an English team? MORON!

  5. Alan says:

What a fabulous comment James, you’ll be glad to know I was there the night Northern Ireland f*cked England good and proper at Windsor Park. I bet it still means as much to me and our fans as it hurts you.

All of you are putting country before club and I know for a fact you’re in the minority when it comes to most Spurs fans. I never said I wished injury on Ledley, far from it but anything that keeps our players from getting even more badly injured playing for another country is good enough for me.

Once again English football fans reply to a post they don’t like by personally insulting the author. Is it a national problem? Should Jamie Oliver campaign for literacy in schools before worrying about exchanging your chicken nuggets for caesar salads?

For those who mistake an English based club for the England national team, I say look at the amount of nationalities in the Spurs squad these days, we cover plenty of countries all over the world. Do you think Edgar Davids cares about the England national team or Mido or Naybet or Stalteri? Does this mean they care any less about Spurs as a club and how we progress next season? I’ve supported Spurs for nearly thirty years and I see no reason why I should have to want England to do well as it has no positive bearing on Spurs as a club whatsoever.

Idiocy or not, I stand by my comments.

  6. Rob says:

To be honest I think your very, very wrong. Think back to when we played France in the first round (group stages) and Ledley got his chance to play, that game changed him as a player. He was amazing in that game and everytime he has played for England he has come back an even better player. I personally hope as many of our players go to the wc as possible as it will change them mentally and they will return twice the players they were before. Carrick has been better since he got that start the other week for England, as has Jenas. Our players need to be on that plane. Injuries happen! King could very well pick up an injury when he trains for Spurs after he returns from the wc. Its just luck. So in my opinion, even if your are a sodding paddy fan, our players going to the wc is vital for them as players. That can only be a good thing for Spurs.

  7. yido says:

are you mad? you dont know nothing about football mate. if a player does well at an internationa; tournament, there confidence goes up, it can make them a better player, there value goes up. now how does that not effect clubs? yeah there’s negative sides to it aswell, but i’d rather see the whole of tottenham’s potential world cup players go, and come back better, more experienced players. think about it…. oh yeah, who’s in the world cup???

  8. shaun says:

i see what ur sayin but ur a mug!

  9. dicko says:

no wonder we make jokes of the paddies, complete idiotic and the problem is, he doesn’t even know what a complete pr**k he is.
Ledley for England and bring back the World Cup to stuff it up these Mick’s.

  10. Alan says:

Dicko? Says it all really, doesn’t it chief?

I’m enjoying the racist overtones from some of you whose comments I’ve allowed and a few who’ve I’ve had to bin because they bordered on race hate material.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again:

HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY, HEALY!

World Cup? You’re having a laugh.

  11. Rob says:

I dont agree with people being racist but it doesnt take away from the fact your just wrong. If Defoe goes to the world cup, ends up player most of the games and scores in all of them then he is going to have another £10million slapped on his head on top of the £11million he is worth now. That way clubs might be put off buying him OR if we do sell him we have £20 odd million to reinvest. Think about it.

Now your welcome to sit there saying how you dont give a toss about England winning the wc but you cannot sit there thinking you have Spurs’ best interests at heart by thinking our players shouldnt go. Personally I’m not a great fan of International football and I much prefer domestic but to me it is obvious what is best for our players. Think about this also… we’ll have 5 or 6 of our guys on the England team and Arsenal will have… hmmm… er… barely 1!

  12. THFC says:

Oi mate, you are a fkn idiot. how would you feel if you were in ledley’s position, having his wc ambition cut, no matter what club or country he plays for. have a lil empathy mate, you twat

  13. welshyid says:

Being Welsh i dont give a flying f*ck how England get on in the world cup, But i hope King goes….and that c*nt S*l gets shot….

  14. Neil says:

This is getting out of hand would everyone whos losing the plot and being racist please get a grip of themselves. Im a Tottenham fan and im from Dublin. My house is five mins down the road from Robbie Keanes house who as you all know has been our best player for years. Ive followed Tottenham since I was born , my Dad lived in London for 6 years in the sixties back when we ruled the league im Tottenham through and through. The fact that im from Ireland, does it mean Im less of a supporter…? I dont think so and heres my point. Tottenham is Tottenham and your national team is your national team. Just because somebody writes a blog and voices an opinion on a certain player who happens to represent a certain country and you dont agree with him, to lower yourself and become racist is totally unacceptable in this day and age. Anyone with an iq over 80 will agree with me, DICKO , you my friend are probably in the singles figures so that doesnt apply to you if thats the best you can come up with you live a worthless life. Reading some of those idiotic responses has taken me off the point of the original blog a bit and for that I apologise. I dont actually agree with the author at all. I think it can only benefit Us and King in the long run if he goes to the world cup the world cup is what dreams are made off no matter what country you play for and if your lucky enough to be in with a chance of going you gotta take it. I really do wish England all the best this summer I think you have a good chance of doing something. As Ireland are not there this time , I will be cheering on England Ive followed your league for years and I watch your players week in week out like everyone else so its logical to be hoping you do well. As Tottenham fans we should all be focusing on Arsenal cause thats all that matters now.

  15. Bald Man says:

Seems easier to insult than persuade for many.

    Alan,
If Spurs have to take the long road in the Champions League, then the extra rest might outweigh the experience of playing with England as they under-perform in Germany :) If Spurs manage to give fourth away, then I think King would be better off going.

  16. Alan says:

The very real prospect (if we beat the real enemy next Saturday and hold on to 4th place) of a long, hard Champion’s League qualifying campaign before reching the competition proper is the very reason why I’d rather our players didn’t have a hard summer in Germany.

My focus is on Spurs and building on the progress we’ve made. It will all have been in vain if we do qualify and the lads all come back from the World Cup medal-less and knackered.

  17. Milo Riano says:

I could not admire your love for your team more.

I may have a totally different opinion on it; but still I respect yours and keep on firing man. :)

  18. Rob says:

I heard today that if King does not make the wc Wes Brown of Man Ure is going to go in his place!!! Now that is the funniest thing I have heard in a long time. Michael Dawson is by far the more superior of defenders in my opinion. I’m not just saying that as a Spurs fan but as a football fan. I cannot wait for Sven to be replaced.

Back to the topic though… I hope we knobble the Goons this weekend, I truely do. I think we deserve it and I even think we are capable of a win. This match is the biggest I think I have ever seen for us so I’ve been nervous about it for a few weeks now. If we do make the Champions League I think we should not worry about our early start to the season. Liverpool have done it and they are 3rd, so witht the right man management from Jol and the staff the WC shouldnt be a problem. As I said previously, injuries happen. So there is no point worrying about fitness levels of our players until August comes round.

Lets take it a week at a time now yids… calm down. Next stop, the library. Lets give those Arse’s a last NLD at Highbury to remember (and I dont mean a good one for them!) COYS

  19. Alan says:

Well said Rob, about time we stuck together and agreed that the big one against the Plum Peril is the main concern for us now.

  1. [...] The virus continues to spread. This is sooo bad, in the latest victim of the virus, Spurs captain suffered a stress fracture to the fourth metatarsal of his left foot which may not heal in time for the World Cup competition. This is really getting frustrating. Who would want to see the greatest sporting event in the world being won by a “complete” team rather than the best team? Quite surprisingly, Alan from thefootie has a rather different opinion on it. [...]

  2. [...] Before anybody complains about racism and feeling discriminated against in this country, I ask them to read the commentary as it pertains to Europeans and soccer players. Absolutely despicable and disgusting behaviour. [...]

  3. [...] I find it quite unique in the way fans love, defend and stand by their teams. The football forums and communities I have joined always had violent people who behaved like barbarians. Their love is unquestionable to the extent that they put their education, integrity, credibility, etc. on the line just to defend their heart’s desire. [...]
