Sepp Blatter Threatens to Ban Turkey from 2010 World Cup

Sepp BlatterYeah, like that would really happen.

If any FIFA president banned a team from the World Cup for a reason other than an on-pitch shooting or racist attack, there would be an uproar. But if a Swiss FIFA president banned a team for a fight that happened to have been with his own national team? All hell would break lose! There’d be a price on Blatter’s head (a price which would probably be collected), the affected team would stage a sit-in at a WC venue, and the entire country would go on hunger strike until the decision was overturned. And I’m not at all suggesting these are distinctly Turkish characteristics – imagine the insanity if England were banned in a similar situation. Or Italy. Seriously – I can’t even begin to comprehend the level of outrage that would result.

Something needs to be done – to both teams, I think – but banning them from South Africa is not the answer. Not only that, but that solution is so far out of the realm of possibility that it stinks of impotent macho bluster instead of effective leadership and problem-solving (which doesn’t do much for Blatter’s already shaky reputation).
