Montreal Impact Bows To River Plate 2-1

Montreal Impact lost to Argentina’s River Plate 2-1 last night in over-time. River Plate remained undefeated on their Canadian tour. They played the Toronto FC and a game against an English clud in Edmonton so far.

It may have been raining hard in Montreal yesterday but attendance was high to near capacity at the Saputo Stadium. A large River Plate crowd was there for support as well. RP’s Christian Fabbiano managed to slip one buy in the 21st minute. But it was Montreal’s rebound in the 64 minute by Roberto Brown that got the local fans going.
Despite being a friendly game, …read more

UEFA Concerned With Player’s Pay

UEFA Concerned With Player’s Pay

Well it was bound to happen – and it seems like it is going to happen. The UEFA is finally concerned that players are getting paid too much money. With players getting some of the highest paid sports contracts in the world only clubs with deep pockets are able to compete.
If you’re not a club that can spend like Manchester United or Real Madrid you may as well not even try to compete. And where is all of this money coming from? Well European soccer has just been hit by a wave of Middle Eastern investors who stumbled on …read more

Paulista Championship Cup Up In Flames

Whoever though to combine paper streamers with fireworks should be fired, literally! After winning the  Paulista Championship, the Corinthians celebrated by torching their team captain William.
After forcing a draw between them and Santos on Sunday, May 3, 2009, the Corinthians clenched the coveted Brazilian Cup. To celebrate the victory. William and other executives from the team hoisted up the cup on a cherry-picker. Will fireworks, flares, and everything else explosive going off sparks caught the paper streamers that quickly lit aflame. No one was hurt in the incident and the fire was quickly put out.
Thank goodness. It’s always terrible when a …read more

It was announced that the Portland Timbers will be added to the Major Soccer Leagues roster for 2012. The Timbers currently play for the United Soccer League but are very excited to be joining the MLS.

These are exciting times for soccer in North America as the MLS expands to include great teams all over the United States and Canada. For Canada, Vancouver will be added in 2011 and Ottawa is still hammering out details for their 2013 addition.

Chelsea’s Ashley Cole Sobers Up After Nightclub Police Fiasco

Ashley Cole of Chelsea was thrown into the tank (jail) for three hours Wednesday morning after swearing at police outside of a west London nightclub. Cole was obviously intoxicated and police said that his display of public drunkenness warranted a sobering up in the slammer and a fine of 80 pounds.

Cole (28yrs) is said to make 80,000 pounds a week with Chelsea so I don’t think he will be hurting financially over this incident. The real damage is his reputation in the club.

Arshavin Begs For New Deal With Arsenal

Young Russian soccer star Andrei Arshavin is urging his club (Zenit St. Petersburg) to let him go play with Arsenal.

Arshavin has already tried to negotiate moves to Barcelona, Real Madrid and Tottenham unsuccessfully over the summer. The club has been negotiating a sell of about $25 million but for Arshavin, he believes they are asking too much for him. Willing to settle for at least $16.6 million, Arshavin is prepared to take any price.
Makes you wonder if they are mistreating Arshavin or something. I mean why is he so eager to leave his home-country

Messi Needs Attention Too Kaka

In a strange turn of deal makings and trading events, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has told press that he, like Kaka, would not be traded for any amount.

Not the smartest thing to say. Only because now that he admitted it openly, general managers will know that they can offer him less to stay. Seem like Messi just wanted to join in on some of the Kaka team loyalty showboating. I hope that all this tear-felt team loyalty crap goes around so that players eventually get paid less. Thus putting more of that money into giving back to the real fans …read more

Kaka Turns Down Record Multi-Million Trade Deal

It would have been a world-record signing deal worth £100 million pounds ($176.7 million CAN), instead it was the biggest rejection.

Kaka of AC Milan turned down the big offer to play for Manchester City. He said that he wanted to play in the Italian club for as long as possible. I mean could you blame the guy. Milan is nice. Beautiful beaches, great team. However to turn down such a large sum will seem foolish in the very near future.
