Hamm Named as 2011 World Cup Ambassador

Mia Hamm of the United States has been named as ambassador for the 2011 Women’s World Cup Games in Germany. The prestigious honor means that Hamm will be going around the world to represent the games and help promote women’s soccer. She was named world player of the year back in 2001 and has brought home gold medals for the United States for the last two summer Olympic games.

Mia Hamm was an obvious choice for FIFA as she has single handedly brought more attention to soccer as a professional sport in the United States than David Beckham. Despite what people say about soccer in North America she has shown everyone that they are competitive and are the team to beat in any world competition. With the US Womens national team missing Mia many are wondering if they will be able to bring it. I guess we’ll just have to see in 2011 in Germany.

Kristina Kiss Retires From Canadian Soccer

Kirstina Kiss has announced today that she will be retiring from the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team today. Kiss began her soccer career in Ottawa, Ontario after being a star player at the Holy Trinity High School. She was the team captain for Canada and helped her team win silver at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo and bronze in 2007 at the Pan American games in Rio de Janairo. She also represented Canada twice at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Games.

There was no reason given for her retirement, at just 28 she’s hardly over her prime. But she did tell reporters that she was retiring and wanted to wish the new generation of players good luck in helping develop the sport in Canada.

Kristina Kiss studies philosophy and psychology at Carelton University in Ottawa, Canada. She also won the Canadian National Junior Judo Championship in 1995 in the under 44 kg category. She has made a total of 75 Team Canada appearances which places her 11th in Canada’s player history.

2011 Women’s World Cup Emblem Revealed

The 2011 Women’s World Cup emblem was revealed in it’s host country of Germany yesterday, April 19, 2008. The emblem features an arena circled with the German flag colours. Germany of course is excited to host the biggest women’s soccer event. The German national team won the cup last year with the defeat of Brazil.

“I really like the logo, particularly because it expresses the enormous global development of women’s football and also its strengths, namely enjoyment, energy and elegance, as well as showing that football is something for all of society,” Tatjana Haenni

I’m not sure if I see all of that in the emblem. It just looks like a simple everyday ‘run of the mill’ type of thing.

U.S. Hires New Coach For Women’s National Team

A former professional soccer player from Sweden has been hired to replace superstar coach Greg Ryan for the U.S. National Soccer Team. Pia Sundhage was hired Tuesday by the association to help take the U.S. women’s soccer team through the 2008 Olympics. Though Greg Ryan had a near flawless coaching career of 45-1-9 he was blamed for the one deciding loss they suffered in the World Cup to Brazil.

Sundhage, who was the assistant for China at the World Cup, has never been a head coach before. Some may see this as a setback for the U.S. national team, but the association is being clear that they have confidence in him.

Drama Continues as US Looks For Women’s Soccer Coach

Drama in the US is continuing for the women’s national soccer team as they are having trouble replacing their star coach.

The United States Women’s Soccer Team is still suffering from the loss at the World Cup. After Brazil shamed the “The Greatest Team You’ve Never Heard Of,” measures were taken to suspend their head coach. They blamed coach Greg Ryan, who had a 45-1-9 record, for their loss and now they are having problems having him replaced.

Well whatever they do they need to pull their heads out of their a**, get over their loss and be better prepared next time. The problem with the US is that they can be full of themselves, if they can get over that maybe they can have a team who can win them the cup again.

Germany Will Host FIFA 2011 Women’s World Cup

Germany won the bid today to act as host of the FIFA 2011 Women’s World Cup. The FIFA executive committee had narrowed their final decision down to either Germany or Canada, but the current world champions country seemed to be a more favourable decision. The Canadian Soccer Association was told by a commettee insider that they had the bid, but different factors seems to have played into their decision. The CSA believes that their bidding lost came down to the following five factors that worked against them.

1) France’s withdrawal from the competition upped European support for German bid.

2) The influence of German legend Franz Beckenbauer, a member of FIFA’s executive committee.

3) Germany arrived with a full delegation, including top politicians. Maestracci says the federal government sent a video rather than a cabinet minister.

4) Negative fallout of the Chilean team scuffle with police at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Toronto.

5) The U.S. hosted the event in 1999 and 2003, making another North American host less attractive

When cosidering the lack of interest by the Canadian Federal Government it isn’t any wonder why Canada lost the bid. I mean, if it had been about hockey, Canada would have been all over it.

The United States and China have hosted the Women’s World Cup twice out of five tournaments since 1991 when the first FIFA Women’s World Cup was played. In fact the only other country to host the event has been Sweden.

Team USA Women’s Soccer Coach Benched

Greg Ryan will not be returning as the coach for the United States women’s national soccer team next season, U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati announced Monday.

Team USA were just just a short victory away from clenching the World Cup. But their dream was crushed with a shocking Brazil win. Well, someone needs to take the blame, and right now the interogation light is on coach Greg Ryan.

In a contrevesial decision, Ryan benched star goalkeeper Hope Solo with Brianna Scurry who proceded to let in four goals. The players immediatly blamed Ryan, who defended his decision. His explaination doesn’t seem to cut it for the Team USA board who have decided to not renew his contract that will expire October 22, 2007.

This decision will mean that Ryan, who had maintained a 45-1-9 record, will not be coaching Team USA in the Olympic games.
