Falcon Northwest’s newest FragBoxes are impressive, packing gaming power “in the size of a shoebox”, as the marketing tagline goes. Unfortunately, the basic build will you set you back by $2072.90 (not counting shipping and applicable sales taxes).

Would it be possible to get that same kind of power and portability at a lower price? I looked through NewEgg for parts similar to Falcon’s setup (mostly choosing the top-rated parts for each search). Here’s what I came up with:

| Component | Price | |
|---|---|---|
| Case | Thermaltake VF1000BWS Black Computer Case With Side Panel Window |
$130 |
| Power Supply | CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX 620W Power Supply |
$150 |
| CPU | Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor |
$280 |
| Memory | CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory |
$92 |
| Video Card | EVGA GeForce GTS 250 512-P3-1150-TR Video Card |
$130 |
| Hard Drive | Western Digital Caviar SE16 640GB 3.5″ SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive |
$130 |
| Optical Drive | Sony Optiarc DVD/CD Rewritable Drive Black SATA Model AD-7240S-0B |
$27 |
| OS | Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders |
$100 |
Of course, you’ll be missing out on the 3-year warranty. And you’ll have to assemble everything yourself. So if those are worth the $1000 difference, you can buy the FragBox at Falcon Northwest’s website.

Dude – how do you get a working computer form the parts you have listed? Your missing the motherboard.

Also your HDD you linked id 69.99
Do’h! You’re right… but I wouldn’t get that motherboard you linked to—it doesn’t work with the Core i7 920. In fact, this is the only motherboard that fits in the case and supports the CPU:

Typo on the $130… so the new total is around $1,200. Still a bargain compared to FN’s price, don’t you think?
