When I first saw this, it looked similar to the Visa Wave cards we have over here in Malaysia that launched last year (27 April 2004). Looks like Asia implemented this faster than the USA counterparts. However I’m still waiting for the day we’ll use those cool Exxon Mobile RFID tags (SpeedPass) in USA.
DigitalTechNews reports that American Express has introduced “contactless” wireless credit cards that you can wave in front of a sensor to make payments. The ExpressPay cards are said to make transactions 63 percent faster than using cash. The system uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) signals to capture information on your Credit Card to authenticate the transaction.
Engadget further elaborates by saying the ExpressPay card will also be tested in select branches of a number of chain stores, including 7-Eleven, CVS and Ritz Camera. The feature, which is already in the test phase, is similar to the “blink” card being tested by JPMorgan Chase. Like Chase, Amex says the ExpressPay system is as secure as traditional charge cards, and the company provides its standard fraud and theft protection as well.
