Hey there, as a Crumpler employee, I'd like to say that the Dreadful Embarrassment is primarily intended for the 17" MacBook Pro and similarly sized notebooks. The notebook sleeve is lightly padded, too. The cargo space in this bag is somewhat exponentially larger than the two smaller 12 and 15" models, so much that it's a good overnight bag!
You could have been much better off with the appropriate 15" model - the Considerable Embarassment.
As for your auto mishap, I have found through similar experiences that using a car seat for goods is only effective if one employs the seatbelt to restrain the cargo - as you would for a beloved passenger. Otherwise the floor is a much safer bet.
Finally - never leave your prized bag in view in a car - that's just inviting thieves!
