First Installs on a New PC: What’s Yours?

That HP w2228h seemed a bit lonely—especially after the XPS M1330 fiasco—so I decided to kit together a budget gaming PC. Those 1680 x 1050 of LCD-driven goodness seemed more suited for entertainment after all. Taking a few cues from extremetech.com, modifying the setup according to parts availability, I now write with this with my new speedy machine.
Here’s what I installed after Windows and the hardware drivers (in this particular order):
- Firefox
- Flash Player Plugin (for Firefox)
- AVG Free Edition
- iTunes (comes with QuickTime)
- Picasa
- Yahoo Messenger
- Skype
- µTorrent
- FileZilla
- VLC
- Totally Free Burner
- Adobe Reader
Now I’m off to install productivity applications. Perhaps later on I’ll finally progress to the games. Have I forgotten anything, dear readers? Of course, feel free to suggest alternatives to my list.
I would have gone with Media Player Classic Home Cinema edition over VLC, but to each his own I do have VLC on every PC but I find MPC to be more user friendly at only a minimal loss in capability.
I’m really liking InfraRecorder these days for burning. I also usually grab ISO Recorder for super-simple 1-click ISO burning.
lol..Media Player Classic is known to be infected with spywares. Well, this is what I would have installed in my laptop after a clean reformat:
1. µTorrent
2. AC3Filter (for high quality DVD playback)
3. Ares (for P2P sharing)
4. CCleaner (You always want to keep your system clean)
5. DivX Player
6. FlashGet (for extreme downloading speeds)
7. Google Chrome
8. Google Gmail Notifier (It better than GTalk’s reminder)
9. MediaMonkey (far better than ur iTunes)
10. Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007
11. Mozilla Firefox (although im not a big fan, i need it for my designing business)
12. Opera (The best browser in the world)
13. QuickTime (for playing AAC and MP4 formats)
14. RealPlayer (support of RM and 3GP)
15. Skype
16. Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2009 (the best security software ever made)
17. Winamp
18. Windows Live Messenger
19. WinRAR archiver (must have)
20. XnView (view all images in one fast application)
21. Zune (because its better than ipod)
Its a complete list. Once you have it all, u have everything. I’m a webdesigner, so I have several other apps which u may not need like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, FileZilla FTP client, and several others.

David B: Does it have a complete codec set with it? And what about the reported bundling of malware with some copies? Which are safe sources of MPC?
Roy: I’ll try it when you can, though experience showed that Totally Free Burner does a great job as well.
ShahZ: A pretty comprehensive list indeed! Was just wondering why your favorite browser came after Chrome though.
