LimePC smalllist Linux UMPC at CES 2008

What’s smaller than an iPod Video, run apps like a UMPC and has Linux as its base OS? Its fashionably called the LimePC, and its touted to be as small as a iPod nano.

This Linux UMPC is set to be the hottest Product at CES 2008, hmmmmm. Not much details yet on this small wonder but we know it has sports a FreeScale MPC5121e CPU, Graphics, Audio cards, PCI, Ethernet, SATA, USB motherboard and full Linux PC functions thrown in. It runs LimeOS, based on the Debian Linux and full screen HTML based user interface and Web 2.0 applications. more at i4u

?? hottest device?? maybe for geeks? An ideal pocket computer would have an easy to input touch type keyboard, be thin, light, yet as large as possible when opened and still would close and fit into a jacket pocket. Devices that do not have good functionality are gimicks and not something anyone would be able to use in the real world or would purchase.

How many people do you see owning a wristwatch tv? none

This is another example of geeks with no social awareness designing useless devices.

  2. Steve says:

I agree with the first poster. To be successful, it should have as big a screen as possible yet poctable. I personally think the ideal screen size is about 5 inch diagonal, and not any bigger. 4.5 inch would be the minimum. This device would be next to useless.

I agree with both Steve and Al, this device is a useless waste of time. It is not that different than many of the poor designs in mobile devices. Most are too small and have a lame thumb input which nobody wants or are too large to fit in a jacket pocket unless you are a total geek. Now that technology has advanced I think the computer designers should use this great technology but stick to good form factors like the old clamshells. Redesign the old Psion, do not make a useless computer like LimePC

“the hottest Product at CES 2008″ NOT for normal people but maybe for geeks! I think this is why UMPC’s have failed. There are too many geeks that have absolutely no idea about what the normal mainstream users want. If your a geek your social skills and awareness to what most people want is lacking. We want the largest screen and the largest touch type keyboard that will fit into a jacket pocket and yes we would like full Windows OS on it too.

So far, the only UMPC that fits the description most of you have identified is Samsung’s SPH 9200. It offers a five inch screen with a keyboard large enough to touch type. How so? It opens up like a calm but upwards and sideways to reveal a comfortably-sized keyboard. Unfortunately, I’ve gotten friends to try and get me a model from its country of origin, but it seems, even Korea’s not retailing it yet. : (

  6. sbisa says:

Agree with Al, but no, we do not want a Windows OS to ruin it.
