Longhorn is Windows Vista

Windows Vista. What a funny name for an OS by Microsoft. Its better though than the name Savvy for Proton’s new car that was originally named Sassy ( sissy perhaps ? ).

Definition of “Vista” via Dictionary.com

1. A distant view or prospect, especially one seen through an opening, as between rows of buildings or trees.
2. An avenue or other passage affording such a view.

# An awareness of a range of time, events, or subjects; a broad mental view: “the deep and sweeping vistas these pioneering critics opened up” (Arthur C. Danto).

Update from Gizmodo :

It sounds like a spa resort in the mountains, but the name was apparently inspired to “bring clarity to your world.”

REDMOND, Wash., July 22, 2005 — Today Microsoft Corp. announced the official name of its next-generation Windows® client operating system, formerly code-named “Longhorn.” Windows Vista Beta 1, targeted at developers and IT professionals, will be available by August 3rd 2005.

  1. ... hmmm ... says:

    hi from Spain !
“Vista” in spanish means “ability to see; vision”…
so… we are kidding about the name…
    “They don’t see very well”

  2. Rather a drab name, I thought. Compare the feisty Firefox with its hint of foxy ladies and FIRE! Still, its the Microsoft name - and Windows - that will sell it. Vista could just as well be “06″ for all people will care.
