Manic Monday for Maxis is a Nightmare

Now wonder my ex-colleague was complaining about the lousy Maxis Mobile Service yesterday in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). Their lines were jammed up ! Goes to show you that Malaysians love to send SMS. Last year in 2005, Malaysians sent a massive 21.03 billion SMS last year, averaging 666 SMS per second.
It was intended as a reward for its 7 million estimated users, the Manic Monday 1000 SMS at RM1 offer by Maxis however went horribly wrong. Maybe they underestimated the number of users who would take up the offer. SMS’es were sent out by the millions, and inevitably their exchanges were overloaded and service disruptions were being reported all over town.
Keeping in mind that it was a public holiday, and the offer was only made public less then 24 hours before, the damage can still be considered minimal. However, the offer is set to return on every Monday for the rest of May, so we will have to wait and see if the Maxis exchanges will be able to keep up with the flood of SMS’es, or will their network be taken down yet again next Monday.
