Maxtor One Touch III Turbo Edition is the latest in the family of One Touch series of external hard drives. This 1 TB drive is supposed to be for video editors and graphic designers who have to work with large amounts of data. The one we received for review came with FireWire 800,400 (b, a respectively) connectivity and USB 2.0. It supports RAID0 and RAID1 for performance or security according to the need of the user. It has two ATA physical drives inside the box and an external power adapter.
The Maxtor OneTouch III solution, with a triple FireWire 800/FireWire 400/USB 2.0 interface, was selected as a CES 2006 Innovations Design and Engineering Honoree in the Computer Accessories category. It was chosen for its engineering qualities, the product’s intended use/function, unique features, and aesthetic and design qualities, among other reasons. To meet the needs of mainstream creative and business professionals, Maxtor is offering the Maxtor OneTouch III with dual interfaces, FireWire 400 and USB 2.0, for quickly and easily backing up photos, music and data.
All Maxtor OneTouch external storage and backup systems come with an added data security feature called Maxtor DriveLock, which provides a password protection option to safeguard contents if the drive is ever lost or stolen, said company in its statement.

I’ve bought TWO (2) of these 1TB drives in the past month and have had to return BOTH of them. One had a defective fan that made contact with the unit’s housing, creating a noise level unacceptable in a studio environment. The second drive presented a drive failure error the first time it was powered on. I would not recommend purchasing this drive based on my 2 for 2 experience.
I purchased a One Touch III 9 months ago. It recently stopped working. The tech support diagnosed a hardware failure and recommended me to replace the drive (it’s under the 1 year warranty). However, data recovery is not included and they charge $700 to $2,900 (upon estimate) to recover data. I believe I lost everything I had in there (probably hundreds of hours of work). Bravo!
This drive is bulky and now it looks like it has a lot of defective faults.
Mine just died too, somewhere they have a failure
I purchased one of these and after 30 days it failed. All I used it for was backing up using Time Machine on my Mac. I sent it in, received a replacement and that failed a few weeks later without even an error. Can’t be recognized on either of my computers and the data is a total loss. Good thing I was backing up elsewhere too as I didn’t trust it.
Even worse, I was using it as a raid 0 array and I still lost all my data!
I’m shipping it back to Seagate again for replacement. When I get it back I’ll be selling it cheap. Let me know if you want to buy it
I will never buy a Maxtor product again.
