Muslim Scholars Call Koran Ringtones Sinful

Recently, a Muslim organization issued a fatwa (a religious opinion on Islamic law) regarding the use of verses from Koran (aayat) as ringtones, declaring that as a sin. The reasoning behind the fatwa was that since people usually answer the phone while ringtones are playing, they would be interrupting the aayat. The organization, represented by a panel of clerics, also argued that these ringtones may be heard while the phone owner is in the toilet, apparently another situational violation. They also made sure to condemn those who keep their phone on vibrate during prayer services.
As a non-Muslim myself, it’s a bit hard to understand how fatwas influences the lives of Muslims (apparently they are binding only to certain denominations) so it’s possible a significant number will ignore the opinion. I also wouldn’t know why people would use verses from their religious text as ringtones in the first place. Personally, I think saving readouts of excerpts from the bible and making them play when calls come in is inappropriate. In any case, this isn’t the first time Koran-based ringtones have fallen under theocratic scrutiny.
