Here’s a tip we recently received:
LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling announced today that LightScribe-enabled DVDs are now available worldwide in five new vivid color-background DVDs for LightScribe images: red, orange, yellow, blue and green.
With the five rich and saturated background colors, consumers can add even more individuality, creativity and flair to their customized LightScribe DVD labels, just as they have with CDs.
But, let’s be honest here…
Have any of you purchased a PC that supports LightScribe? Our experiences with this technology, which lets users “burn” the labeling on the actual disc, have been spotty at best.
Notwithstanding the current problems of the labeling fading from frequent use or exposure, and the apparent forming of white powder on Lightscribe disks, LightScribe has two more problems that may prevent it from attaining widespread acceptance.
Most prominent of this is the additional time needed to burn the labeling, and the limitations on color. Buying a CD label sticker, printing on it, and slapping it on a disc still sounds more reasonable, and allows full-color designs.
What do you think?

I have an external LightScribe burner that I use with my MacBook, and I like it a lot. The extra time doesn’t really bother me, as it takes a while to burn a disc anyway.
My biggest problem is actually finding blank media at retail – none of the stores that I frequent have lightscribe discs!
I’m actually excited with the extra colors. I haven’t experienced the fading of the labels, but then again perhaps I don’t use my burned discs that much. I also haven’t seen any white residue.
I have a laptop with a DVD burner equipped with LightScribe. It’s a phenomenal technology, and I love using it. When I’m burning videos to dvd, creating data dvds, etc. the LightScribe labeling is almost a guaranteed wow. I put a video of a sales presentation on this, burned a photo with text as the label, and I get positive feedback from clients and prospects constantly about how impressive and professional it is.
Not sure that new colors of the disks will matter as much as, say color “scribing”, but anything that helps me to stand out is a welcome addition.
I have to say that my experience is much better than you describe and i haven’t seen any of those things. BUT i have heard too many horror stories of expensive equipment (mainly Laptops) being screwed up by slapped on labels. which actually are more expensive as you will see lightscribe is now much cheaper and with no expensive ink……. burn flip
My Lightscribe burner came bundled with my last desktop and I love it. I haven’t experienced any of the problems that you describe above, and I find the look to be a lot cleaner than simply printing a color label and slapping it on. The new colors are a welcome addition.
Lightscribe is great. can they reduce the burning time to 5 minutes?
I have not see any fading, nor powder. But not many stores have lighscribe CDs/DVDs. the colours are welcome. Why only 5 colors?
