The Ace Attorney series is a notable example of the overwrought emotionalism and character movements that characterize Japanese narrative culture. Play an Ace Attorney game and you encounter a tremendously surreal court system where legal arguments become epic, backed up by just-in-time realizations pieced together from obvious fragments of evidence.

My first encounter with this legal adventure game series saw me take on the role of Phoenix Wright, and I was a rookie defending attorney who became a master of cross examination. I even got help from the spirit of my murdered mentor, who somehow possessed her younger sister and made her more… womanly.

Whether or not you’ve played an Ace Attorney game, CAPCOM has made a short flash-based demo of Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth available online. While previous Ace Attorney games mostly cast the player character as the defense lawyer, AAI:ME’s protagonist is Miles Edgeworth, the so-called “demon” prosecutor. The demo literally provides a sneak peek, ending after you’ve made the first investigation breakthrough.

CAPCOM should’ve put more thought into this 3MB demo though. Without the ability to skip through the numerous dialog, playing the demo might prove tedious for those unfamiliar with the Ace Attorney series. In any case, click on the link below to download! The actual game itself, Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, will debut outside of Japan this February 2010.

Left 4 Dead Gameplay Walkthrough Videos

Whether you’ve played the first Left 4 Dead or not, here’s a trio of videos guaranteed to satisfy your curiosity about Left 4 Dead 2.

We begin with the first video, where our hero Criken tests the waters. The new special infected make their debut off-screen, but you can already hear the telltale sounds they make:

The second video is more revealing, at least in terms of gameplay mechanics. Criken intentionally(?) puts himself in bad situations, and shows us how to deal with the new Charger and zombies enjoying bullet-proof protection. He even reveals his “single favorite weapon in all the Left 4 Dead games”. The video ends on a sad note, with a Smoker committing the coup de grace on the fallen group of survivors:

In the third video however, our intrepid hero finally finds the right way:

And ends the final level of the demo in a selfish manner, once again letting his teammates die before entering the safe room alone.

So what do you think? I love the melee weapons, the same but Bayou-nized music, and the new special infected. Boomer-Smoker-Jockey combos already swirl in my head.

Apple Lisa Demo

Back in 1984, the world moved at a much slower pace. So when Adi Blasi demoed the Apple Lisa, Apple’s first GUI-driven computer, the show host never complained of long load times and unresponsive interface delays. In fact, she stayed quiet most of the time, expressing amazement when Adi dragged to select a block of text and changed its font.

Life was a lot simpler back then, and Adi found himself explaining what this mouse thing was all about, how the cursor changed its appearance to provide context over different parts of the interface, and what a technological advance running 16 apps at a time was. Ah, the good old days.
