So is the 5G iPod nano Worth it?

So who is the latest iPod nano for? Well, definitely no for those who already own a fourth-generation iPod nano. Even if the latest iPod nano has a built-in video and voice recorder, an FM radio, and even an external speaker, none of these features are compelling enough to make the nano a must-buy or -upgrade.

The video camera, while a welcome feature in emergencies or must-capture moments, delivers 640 x 480 output. Even under good lighting however, nano videos lack clarity. The FM radio isn’t that different from your typical cell phone radio; you need to plug in the earphones to listen to your favorite FM stations, as the cord acts like an antenna. The built-in pedometer? You can only maximize it when you buy an iPod + Nike kit—which you have to do so for the previous-gen nano anyway. And the less said about the external speaker, the better.

What does work in the iPod nano’s favor is its status as an affordable, stylish, and high-capacity portable music and video player. This remains true for the fifth-generation iPod: nothing else on the market costs below $180, features a bright 2.2″ 240 x 376 screen, is really thin, and makes short work of browsing through music and videos.

In other words, the iPod nano is perfect for those who’ve fallen for Apple’s effective (and mostly accurate) iPod marketing, but aren’t willing to pay more for the iPod classic or touch, and would rather do without the display-less iPod shuffle experience.

Sizing Up the 4G iPod nano

The fourth-generation iPod nano brings Apple’s smaller portable player back to its form factor roots, albeit through a smaller and more feature-laden package. To wit:

The newest iPod nano is oh so slightly thinner than its predecessor, and the displays of both the 3G and 4G variants are actually the same, in terms of size and max brightness. No idea on why Apple bumped the max video playback time to 3 hours though.

Even for a (mostly) rabid anti-Apple virtual rag like this, credit is due where credit is due, especially since the newest iPod nano is unprecedented for Apple.

You see, by coming out with an iPod nano for every color in the rainbow—as well as in black and white—Apple has pretty much covered every visual base, providing the consumer with a surprisingly wide array of choices (gasp!).

Could this be the beginning of something special over at Cupertino? That’s kinda an exaggeration there, but hope springs eternal, right?

Thanks to a “can do no wrong” image cultivated by its effective marketing machine, people make the mistake of assuming that Apple’s the best out there—bar none (may we invite you to revisit the myth of the Apple iPhone’s overwhelming superiority?). So you can imagine the amount of press coverage the flaming iPod nano (which has something to do with its battery) has received:

Wha? The Apple iPod nano actually failing is news? When did we anoint Apple and Steve Jobs as god-incarnate, incapable of any gadget-related error whatsoever? Apple may have a lot of undeserved attention from the online and offline media, but this also means its really under the magnifying glass; the smallest slip-up generates news stories from here to Timbuktu.
