Whether you prefer an Intel or AMD CPU, tecmo’s got you covered. Here are two gaming PC builds he’s recommended, with input from TH’s more veteran members. Both are designed to “play games at mid. to max. settings at a monitor resolution of 1440×900 or less”:

Remember that $979 computer that rivaled Falcon Northwest’s $2000+ FragBox, in terms of power and portability? Turns out I forgot to include a motherboard!
Do’h! Sorry ’bout that dear readers. In any case, the only motherboard on NewEgg (where I got the other parts) than will fit into the microATX case and support the Core i7 920 CPU (both the computer case and processor I listed, respectively) is an offering from DFI. So, here’s the complete list:

$2K+ Falcon Northwest FragBox for Only $979

Falcon Northwest’s newest FragBoxes are impressive, packing gaming power “in the size of a shoebox”, as the marketing tagline goes. Unfortunately, the basic build will you set you back by $2072.90 (not counting shipping and applicable sales taxes).
Would it be possible to get that same kind of power and portability at a lower price? I looked through NewEgg for parts similar to Falcon’s setup (mostly choosing the top-rated parts for each search). Here’s what I came up with:
Component

Thermaltake VF1000BWS Black Computer Case With Side Panel Window

If you’re on the market for an affordable HDMI-capable display, consider the Black ASUS VH226H currently available on NewEgg.com. With a max resolution of 1920 x 1080, this monitor also features built-in speakers, and also supports DVI-input. Out of the 222 reviews left by customers on the retail site, over 3/4 give the product a 5 out of 5.
