Enterprising Tom’s Hardware member tecmo34 has taken the time to write a “Recommended Build” guide, outlining the parts you should get for a “budget” gaming PC. Remember that $979 computer that rivaled Falcon Northwest’s $2000+ FragBox, in terms of power and portability? Turns out I forgot to include a motherboard!

Falcon Northwest’s newest FragBoxes are impressive, packing gaming power “in the size of a shoebox”, as the marketing tagline goes. Unfortunately, the basic build will you set you back by $2072.90 (not counting shipping and applicable sales taxes).
Would it be possible to get that same kind of power and portability at a lower price? I looked through NewEgg for parts similar to Falcon’s setup (mostly choosing the top-rated parts for each search). Here’s what I came up with:
