Remember that $979 computer that rivaled Falcon Northwest’s $2000+ FragBox, in terms of power and portability? Turns out I forgot to include a motherboard!
Do’h! Sorry ’bout that dear readers. In any case, the only motherboard on NewEgg (where I got the other parts) than will fit into the microATX case and support the Core i7 920 CPU (both the computer case and processor I listed, respectively) is an offering from DFI. So, here’s the complete list:
| Component | Price | |
|---|---|---|
| Case | Thermaltake VF1000BWS Black Computer Case With Side Panel Window |
$130 |
| Power Supply | CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX 620W Power Supply |
$150 |
| Motherboard | DFI LANPARTY JR X58-T3H6 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard |
$220 |
| CPU | Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor |
$280 |
| Memory | CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory |
$92 |
| Video Card | EVGA GeForce GTS 250 512-P3-1150-TR Video Card |
$130 |
| Hard Drive | Western Digital Caviar SE16 640GB 3.5″ SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive |
$70 |
| Optical Drive | Sony Optiarc DVD/CD Rewritable Drive Black SATA Model AD-7240S-0B |
$27 |
| OS | Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders |
$100 |
| Total | $1199 |
So we’ve got a new total of $1200. Still much better than Falcon Northwest’s base model FragBox, which costs over $2000. Again though, you have to consider if saving $800 is worth missing out on a three-year warranty and someone else assembling the box for you.
