zBoost zPersonal to Boost Cellular Phone Signals

Cellular repeaters are devices that are designed to boost cell phone reception in areas where there is little or no cell phone coverage. Even though cell phones are an integral part of our daily life poor cell signal is still a major problem. Just a few weeks ago a product was reviewed favorably in the New York Times (“Coaxing More Bars Out of That Cellphone” – March 1st ) and the article was then picked up by Cnet and many others.

Recently a new product was released by the manufacturer zBoost, called the zBoost zPersonal. Designed as an entry level unit this is the first genuine cell phone repeater that will retail at under $100. This puts a cell repeater in the price range of a much larger audience, and will increase awareness of the repeater industry at large. In recognition of this achievement, the zBoost zP was given 3rd place in the annual CTIA Emerging Technologies Award.

The zBoost zP will be a dual band repeater which will work for all networks on the 800MHz and 1900Mhz bands. This covers both CDMA and GSM networks in the Americas, but not iDEN in Japan. The first release of the zP will be aimed at the US market, and so it will not be compatible with European or Japanese networks.

It was my understanding that this was not a “Repeater” but rather a signal amplifier that boosts the signal by induction. A repeater does not require that there be a connection or even close proximity of the device to the phone.
