2009 Kentucky Derby trail: Grade 2 Louisiana Derby

2009 Kentucky Derby trail: Grade 2 Louisiana Derby

There are no less than four Saturday Derby preps on tap, and each day this week I will preview one, starting with the Louisiana Derby.

I liked Patena in the Lecomte, and he ran on nicely to land the place in his initial try over conventional dirt. My Derby future (pool 1) play was subsequently purchased by IEAH and is now trained by Rick Dutrow, the same connections that brought us Big Brown last year. Well bred $250k Keeneland sales grad drilled a bullet at the Gulf on March 9th and figures to fire a big shot off the layoff under …read more

2009 Kentucky Derby trail: Grade 3 Holy Bull from Gulfstream Park

Saturday’s nine furlong Holy Bull (G3) is the longest Kentucky Derby prep so far, and eleven sophomores have signed up for the challenge.
Danger To Society (Harlan’s Holiday) is 2-2 for Robby Albarado/Ken McPeek, and he exits a smart course/distance tally off a layoff. He owns fine positional speed and lands an advantageous inner post.

Sunday (12-07-08) Fair Grounds recap
A trio of wire jobs on a fair main track. Edge to stalkers and closers on the turf.

Second time starter Cajun Sky (Torres/Duhon) ran a winning race in the grassy 3rd, but she was necked by Morris Nicks firster Say The Word (Albarado). It was 6.75 lengths back to show finisher Elle Ray Dew.
