My 5-1 top Dixieland Breeze won the 6th for trainer Brian House, who ran his record to 6-10 with FTS and 5-8 with debut maiden claimers. Cody Meche rode. Mr. House also ran FTS Roseanne Strand in the MSW 8th race, but that one ran out of gas in the lane.

FRIDAY RECAP

My 5-1 top Dixieland Breeze won the 6th for trainer Brian House, who ran his record to 6-10 with FTS and 5-8 with debut maiden claimers. Cody Meche rode. Mr. House also ran FTS Roseanne Strand in the MSW 8th race, but that one ran out of gas in the lane.

Saturday is closing day of the 2008 Louisiana Downs meet. I took over as Track Handicapper/TV Host on June 26th, and it was a great experience. I met many wonderful people and would like to thank everyone for helping make my first year a successful one!

An $80 horse just won the 9th, so we figure to have a Pick 6 carryover in the neighborhood of $3k heading into closing day.

LAD 1 ($100k Louisiana Stallion, 2yo fil, 7f) #7 GOLDEN LADY LEE (3-1) showed improved morning activity in a sharp local 5f breezing bullet on Oct. 10th. ½ sister to multiple sprint winner Lyra Lee is likely well-meant in her bow. L.Meche/Heitzmann 22% together here, and trainer struck with a 2yo filly FTS yesterday (Rocket Reece), and this one shared the Oct. 10th bullet with yesterday’s winning stablemate…interesting! #5 Wanna Cuddle (2-1) ran into a runaway winner as the fav at this course/distance last time. Leading rider Simington hops aboard, and he’s 1-3 with this barn here. Her BSF’s are on the rise, and she just missed by a head on Aug. 16th. #4 Hazel Grove (5-2) beat Wanna Cuddle by 2.25 lengths from post 10 at 7f last time. She makes her 3rd career start and 2nd try on the main, and note that barn is 0-21 with juveniles.

LAD 2 (Mcl-5k, 3-4-5yo, 8.5f) #10 WINE JUDGE (4-1) removed the hood and earned best last race BSF in decent show finish from an outer post at 7f last time. He stretches back out 3rd race off a layoff and is clearly on the right path for the 26% Lozada/James Counts team. #1 Longshot Legacy (6-5) rallied to finish 4th in his Mcl-25k bow at FG in December, and he didn’t race again until a 7th place finish here on Oct. 2nd. Wes Hawley, 27% at the current meet, adds blinkers and drops from the $15k ranks 2nd off a layoff, and the lightly raced sort will never find an easier spot to succeed. #6 Dream Nightly (6-1) has finished 2nd and 3rd in a pair of $5k state bred starts recently. He faces open company today, and anything approaching his last two should be enough for a Top 3 placing.

LAD 3 ($100k Louisiana Stallion, 2yo, 7f) #1 STORMY M.T.L. (6-1) ducked in at the start in his local bow as the less than 2-1 fav on Oct. 5th. George Northrop Jr. is 4-8 first blinkers, and this one sports a solid local 3f blowout from the gate for this. Improvement expected. #2 Foreign Production (3-1) earned a quality 77 BSF in a much improved effort 2nd time out at 6.5f here, and note that he added blinkers for that race. #8 Sure Fire Runner (4-1) was a debut winner of the same race my top exits, and he got the job done despite racing a bit greenly and failing to change leads. He will not go off at 11-1 this time for EJ Perrodin/Pat Mouton.

LAD 4 (MSW, 3-4-5yo f&m, 8T) #12 VICTORY BRIDGE (6-1) showed marked improvement in a clear place finish when switched to the turf off a March-Oct. layoff here last time. James Hodges is a profitable 25% 2nd off a layoff, and top notch local turf rider Donnie Meche strings along. #4 Galfriend (4-1) was nabbed out of her last by 20% claiming artist Cody Autrey. She has finished 2nd in a pair of MSW turf starts and will be rallying under Curt Bourque. #5 Thundering Gallop (3-1) has finished 3rd in five straight races ranging from 5f on the turf to a mile and seventy yards on the main track. She owns the best last race BSF and earned an above par fig at this course/distance on June 8th.

LAD 5 (Clm-5k, LA-bred 3up, 7f) #2 LIKE A MAGIC FLUTE (7-2) was last seen finishing 3rd in a productive race on Aug. 31st. Place finisher Hello Ladies has come back to win a pair of starter allowance races since, and winner Jack’s Lil Bit was 3rd in a starter allowance event in his next start. He split Fairmont and Semoran’s Decision on July 18th, and both of those horses won races here this week. #8 Bide (3-1) won two straight 7f races at Evangeline in July, and he was 7th for $10k at that same venue off the Keith Bourgeois claim when last seen on Aug. 21st. Barn is 25% with this type of layoff runner, and he fits at this level if able to regain to his sharp summer form. #5 About Face Ace (4-1) returns to his claimed level for leading trainer Jorge Lara. He was a decent 5th off a layoff I that starter allowance ranks last time, and barn $$ rider Lonnie Meche hops aboard the early/pressing type.

LAD 6 (Mcl-15k, 3-4-5yo, 7f) #3 LES BOLD (7-2) broke last at 9-2 in his local bow, and he rallied to finish a more than respectable 4th that day. He sports a good looking gate work since, and he could go much better this time around with a clean beginning. If he has an early ability, expect his aggressive new pilot Carlos Gonzalez to coax it out of him. #8 I’m A Country Boy (5-2) runs well fresh, and trainer Jerry Hardin is a profitable 14% with this type of returnee. He finished 2nd off a layoff in lone try at this distance, and leading rider Simington strings along. #11 Dodaboom (6-1) broke 9th from rail post in his MSW bow, and he basically ran in place near the back of the pack. Place finisher All Star Chris cvame back to romp in his next MSW start. He drops into a maiden claimer, and Leblanc/Irwin are 28% together here.

LAD 7 (Str-Alw, 3up, 7.5T) #10 MAJOR JEFF (12-1) was my top versus similar last time, and he finished a close 7th at 7-2 in that competitive heat. He sports a pair of works since and can rebound for fine turf connections (D.Meche/M.Burgess). #5 Jasons Jaxon (12-1) was a decent 5th from post 11 as part of a multiple horse photo in same race my top exits. He smartly won here on Aug. 30th, and he could bounce back in a better post 3rd race of the shelf. Lonnie Meche had a few options in here (Hurricane Party, Waystogeaux), but he ends up on #1 Bamboo Gap (3-1). My 3rd choice exits a nice flat mile turf win here. Early/pressing sort has been an all or nothing type on the turf

LAD 8 (MSW, 2yo, 1mile-70yds) #5 SOFT SHOE (5-1) finished an even 4th in his 7.5f turf bow at 2-1. Bob Young 19% with 2nd timers, and he owns the top distance Tomlinson (398) in the field. Barn $$ rider Verenzuela sticks. #12 Majestic Gentleman (4-1) was 3rd, 3-lengths in front of my top in that aforementioned turf race. He also has a decent Tomlinson distance number of 381, and trainer Eldon Hall has enjoyed a rock solid meet. #10 Face Off (6-1) was an even 3rd at 6f here last time, and he might flash speed as he stretches out in distance. Jacinto/Hukill are 23% together.

LAD 9 (Alw-32k, LA-bred 3up, 7f) #3 SPRITELY STAR (9-2) has earned quality speed ratings without winning his last pair, and he only missed by a 1/2 length to the hard hitting Roll On Roll On at this distance on Sept. 6th. He projects a great stalking trip under his fav pilot Donnie Meche. #6 Mr. Barracuda (3-1) has been part of the exacta in 8 straight races for Keith Bourgeois. Gerard Melancon is 30% overall with this barn, and he rode the early/pressing sort to a 2nd place finish on July 11th. #1 Meteor Impact (7-2) has not been seen since Dec. ’07, but the 8yo gelding has fired fresh before. His 2006 triple digit BSF’s lay over these, but he cannot be expected to duplicate that form off the bench. He will get pace to chase and has been part of trifecta in 6 of 7 local starts.

LAD 10 ($50k Gate Dancer, 2yo, 7f) #6 MILWAUKEE MIRACLE (5-1) finished a solid 3rd in his debut, and the two experienced rivals (Sweet Sixieland, Leestown Gift) that finished in front of him are both in this race as well. He looked very good in his 3 length maiden win as the fav on Sept. 5th, and his three works since include a pair at this distance. #9 Bertsgoldenmissile (9-5) owns a favorable post for his early/pressing running style. City Style, the place finisher from his last, came back to win a grass stakes race on the Super Derby undercard. Consistent colt owns the best last race speed rating and has the 28% L.Meche/J.Lara team in his corner. #4 Leestown Gift (9-2) is the only entrant with a win at 7f, and he did it nicely to graduate by 5.5 last time.

LAD 11 (MSW, LA-bred 2yo, 7f) #12 ADMIRALS MOUNTAIN (8-1) was a solid 3rd of 11 in his 5.5f Evangeline open MSW bow on July 16th, and winner Tiger Shark came back to win his next start. Kent Badeaux is 25% with this type of layoff runner, and he shows up in the state bred ranks 2nd time out. #1 Smothcideup (5-2) has faced some decent runners, including a few fro the $50k Gate Dancer (Leestown Gift, Milwaukee Miracle). His BSF’s are on the upswing, and he earned his best career fig at this distance last time. #10 Wiremealilcheck (6-1) keeps landing outer post positions. He dueled and finished 4th, 5.5 lengths behind my 2nd choice in his career bow here, than earned an improved speed rating while 4-wide in his 2nd career start on Oct. 3rd.

THURSDAY RECAP

The track was sloppy/muddy and we were off the turf on Thursday. Main track played fair.

Jose Riquelme/Jorge Lara teamed up for two wins on the card.

No winners in the Pick 6, and the carryover pool stands at $2,688. The weather has cleared up for Friday with sunny skies and temps in the low 70’s. We are looking at a drying out fast track, and we will be off the turf. You can get Friday’s changes here.

LAD 1 (Clm-15/3L, 3up, 7f) #7 CARSON THE GREAT (2-1) finished 3rd, beaten a length, in his first try at this level over a speed friendly oval on the Super Derby undercard last time. He won by 5.5 lengths at this distance on Aug. 30th, and note that today’s rider Lonnie Meche was aboard for both career wins. Wes Hawley 27% at the current meet. #3 Wadi Suki (5-2) rallied to finish a head behind my top on Sept. 20th. He won a 2L race at this distance in June, but he has failed in 5 3L spots since, including 4 losing efforts as the fav. PVal hops aboard Joe Duhon’s consistent, versatile colt. #4 Buck’s Bill (15-1) finished 4th behind Wadi Suki in that productive 7f event on June 1st. He reached the winning par for this in 2L wire job route on Sept 5th, and trainer Connie Daniels is 2-10 turf/dirt.

LAD 2 (Mcl-5k, 3-4-5yo f&m, 6f) #2 FRANCES’ ROYALTY (5-2) drops all the way down to the bottom maiden claiming level for Robert Husak, who is a profitable 3-9 with this type of layoff runner. She finished 3rd in a couple of Evangeline MSW races in July. #5 Miss Brenda (5-1) drops to the $5k level for the first time after dueling and weakening as the fav in a wet dast extended sprint on Sept. 12th. PVal sticks wit the 3rd off a layoff contender. #12 Shecando (9-2) has failed to pan-out since the $30k claim at Keeneland last year. She drops from a $10k race 3rd off a layoff, and she will never find an easier wake-up spot.

LAD 3 (Clm-7.5k, 3up, 5f) #3 MY WIRE (5-1) was an above par off a layoff winner for his new trainer Jorge Lara at 5.5f on Oct. 4th. Barn $$ rider Lonnie Meche hops aboard as Torres has left for Hawthorne. Dangerous if able to run two alike. #11 Black Hills Bandit (7-2) has been throwing in the towel in turf sprints recently. 4-time main track winner owns fine speed and retains PVal. Barn 0-14 turf/dirt. #8 Shawklit Royale (3-1) has been part of the exacta in 3 straight and 6 of last 7. He promptly won for $10k in the slop following the $5k Jerry Cart claim, and the stalking type drops a peg for this.

LAD 4 (Mcl-30k, LA-bred 2yo, 6f) #12 TOPVENTURE’S DREAM (8-1) improved 2nd time out off a layoff on Sept. 14th, and show finisher Lucky Seventeen came back to win next start. Jerry Cart is 24% 2nd off a layoff and 33% 1st blinkers. #3 Dessy (7-2) finished 3.5 lengths in front of my 2nd choice last time, and that was a much improved effort in first start for a tag. Al Stall Jr. 31% with juveniles, and L.Meche 1-12 with this barn. #7 Ashar Man (3-1) sports a local gate bullet for trainer George Northrop Jr., who is 3-10 with debut maiden claimers. #4 Cozyfromthegitgo (9-2) debuts for Asmussen, and he’s 30% with debut maiden claimers (50 race sample).

LAD 5 (Clm-5k, LA-bred f&m 3up, 7f) #9 ZARPEN (5-1) drops and switches surfaces 2nd off a layoff for leading trainer Jorge Lara, who saddled two winners here yesterday. Barn is 23% route/sprint and 31% turf/dirt. #8 Our Angel Hour (6-1) finished 2nd for $10k on Oct. 3rd, and she is back in a preferred $5k spot this afternoon. She has been part of exacta in 4 straight and 5 of last 6 starts here. A stalk and pounce trip is anticipated. #1 Zarbalina (3-1) has claiming price slashed in half, and she did win at this course, distance, and level on July 19th. 6-time local winner owns a trio of victories at 7f.

LAD 6 (Mcl-5k, 3-4-5yo f&m, 6f) #8 DIXIELAND BREEZE (10-1) could be live right out of the box for the 25% Cody Meche/Brian House team. Barn is an impressive 5-9 FTS and 4-7 with debut maiden claimers. Her drill on Aug. 24th stands out. #5 Pickatunnel (4-1) was an even 5th for $10k last time. She was a close 3rd in her lone try at this level on Sept. 5th, and place finisher Sunlitsideup came back to win next start. Off the pace player for the productive Dugas/Hukill team. #3 Walkandwork (7-2) was 2nd behind runaway chalk Golden Gayle off a layoff last time. She has been part of trifecta in 4 of 5 local starts.

LAD 7 (Clm-15/3L, f&m 3up, 1mile-70yds) #7 NO TEARS IN HEAVEN has been turfing recently with no wins in 7 starts, so she will not mind that this race has been moved to the main. She has won twice on fast dirt, and her early/pressing speed should serve her well in this spot. #11 Windy’s Blazer was necked on the turf off a layoff last time. She owns a nice main track record (8-2-2-1), and Leblanc got to know her last time. She owns fine early/pressing versatility. #2 Niner’s Star is 1-22 but has been 2nd, 4th, 2nd and 3rd in her last four, so definitely include underneath in exotics.

LAD 8 (MSW, LA-bred 2yo fil, 7f) #10 ROSEANNE STRAND (4-1) debuts for Brian House, and he’s 5-9 with FTS. PVal is 2-4 with this outfit, and she shows a best of 26 local gate bullet for this. #5 O Night Divine (5-1) threw down a pair of strong local bullets in September. Tim Ice is 0-6 FTS and 0-8 with juveniles. #4 Rocket Reece (7-2) showed marked morning improvement in her Oct. 10th bullet. D.Meche/Heitzmann 27% together, and barn is 0-7 FTS.

LAD 9 (Alw-2L, LA-bred 3up, 6.5f) #3 LAWTON CIRCLE (6-1) could be all set for a top as he cuts back in distance 2nd race off the shelf, and note that 23% local trainer William Deakins is 2-3 with 2nd off a layoff runners. He opened up a nice lead around two turns last time, and he missed 2nd by a head and a nose. Winning pilot Jacinto strings along. #12 Pure Carbon (6-1) has shown marked improvement in last pair, a Mcl-5k win and a close 3rd in a starter allowance event, both at this distance. An outside stalk and pounce trip is projected. #8 Spiritinthemist (20-1) did not handle the slop in her 1st start versus winners on Sept. 12th. She looked good breaking her maiden on Aug. 24th, and she could rebound at a price 3rd race off a layoff.

LAD 10 (MSW, LA-bred 3-4-5yo, 8.5f) #6 ELLE RAY DEW was briefly involved from an outer post in 6.5f bow at less than 9-1. He sports a good looking local 5f bullet on Oct. 11th, and Wes Hawley is 24% with 2nd timers. Barn $$ rider Lonnie Meche strings along, and better is certainly possible. #9 Run Rudy Run finished 2nd in all three of his turf starts, and we will see how he handles the main today. Pat Mouton is 21% 2nd off a layoff, and EJ Perrodin got to know him last time. #11 Sovereign Key owns a rising numbers pattern, and he adds blinkers and returns to the state bred ranks today. He gets in lighter with hustling apprentice Dugas and looms a pace factor at the very least.

Main track played fair on Sunday, and off the pace types were preferred on the turf (rail at 20 feet).

Overall Top 3 selections performance (June 26th thru Oct. 12th)

623 races (124 top pick wins, 162 second pick wins, 97 third pick wins)

SUNDAY RECAP

Main track played fair on Sunday, and off the pace types were preferred on the turf (rail at 20 feet).

Sunday started in crazy fashion with Cato crashing the opener at $367.20 under Pedro Monterrey.

Eagle Two Hundred, my Sunday best bet, had a rough journey in the grassy 5th. He had nowhere to go turning for home and continued to race in traffic throughout the lane. He ended up a close 5th, and he was placed 4th via DQ.

PVal booted home a pair on Sunday, and his four wins last week included career victory number 4,000 on Thursday. Billy Patin rode two turf winners on the card.

Thursday-Friday-Saturday marks the end of the 2008 LA Downs race meet. We have a Pick 6 (races 6-11) carryover of $2,515.

LAD 1 (Clm-5k, 3up, 8.5f) #1 AIRZONE (10-1) is fresh off three straight wins at Assinboia Downs, and he earned above par BSF’s in each of those victories. He has won here before, and today’s pilot Laviolette rode him to a place finish in May. #1 Go Legs Go (8-5) finished a solid 2nd from an outer post versus similar local routers last time. He lands a better post today for leading owner Jan Haynes and leading trainer Jorge Lara, and Jose Riquelme got to know him last time. #8 Bobo Is Loose (9-5) is 4-5 over the local main at the current meet, and new trainer Lonnie Briley returns him to the $5k level. Leblanc rides him well, but note that he has lost 3 of his last 4 and might be over the top.

LAD 2 (Clm-15/3L, f&m 3up, 7f) #4 DREAMZY (4-1) keeps earning improved speed ratings without winning, and maybe she finally gets over the 3L hump today. Her last at 6f was her best yet, and she shows a solid local drill since that Sept. 11th place finish. Donnie Meche strings along, and this is her best post draw at the current stand. #5 Marie’s Plan (7-2) has been part of the exacta in 5 straight, and new trainer Jerry Cart is 40% first off the claim. Riquelme is 1-2 with this outfit, and she projects a prominent throughout trip 2nd off a layoff. #2 Freedom Eagle (15-1) was a troubled 8th from post 10 in a local turf sprint last time. Clifford Dodson is a profitable 21% turf/dirt, and this one is 1-5 on the main track.

LAD 3 (Mcl-30k, LA-bred 2yo fil, 6f) #5 BROKEN LINK (3-1) drops in to a maiden claimer for the first time for the profitable Amanda Crandall/Brent Kennedy team. She has faced the likes of multiple winners Run Don’t Stroll, Enjoy the Score, and Skirting Disaster, and she has hit the board in 3 of 5 starts so far. She sports a best of 19 bullet for this. #12 Leeola (5-1) finished a nice 2nd in her local bow on Aug. 29th, and DQ’d show finisher Fancy Brianna came back to graduated by 13 lengths in a Mcl-15k on the Super Derby undercard. #1 Lady Mojo (8-1) drops back in for a tag, and she was only a length behind my top in a MSW event on Aug. 16th. She was hung out to dry in post 11 at 7f last time. Early/pressing type cuts back in distance and lands the rail for the 19% Gonzalez/Barger team, and she might be the one to catch today.

LAD 4 (OC-16/1x, 3up, 1mile-70yds) #5 TRACK RECORD (5-2) finished 3rd behind a couple of decent runners at 6f last time (Forestry Gold-Port Captain). Versatile sort handles a route of ground, and trainer Ellen Williams is 3-10 sprint/route and 4-18 with this type of short layoff runner. #2 Southern Style (5-1) threw in a clunker as the fav in a local sprint last time. Troy Young is 24% sprint/route, and he could go much better 3rd race back for a 28% jockey/trainer team. #6 Smilin’ Del (6-1) confidently jumps into an optional claiming race for leading trainer Jorge Lara following a solid place finish in a $10k route off a layoff. He likes this oval, and barn $$ rider L.Meche rides him well.

LAD 5 (Mcl-5k, 3-4-5yo f&m, 8.5f) #10 ZUPPARDO’S FROST (6-1) goes turf/dirt and dives down to the $5k level. She was a distant 3rd for $20k in a local 7f race on Aug. 24th, and she was an even 3rd behind subsequent winner Stormey Wonder for $10k earlier in the meet. Kerwin Clark hops aboard, and he’s 1-2 with trainer Scott Tubbs here. #9 Mighty N Grand (7-2) earned an above par 48 BSF in clear place finish at 7f last time. Barn 0-13 sprint/route, and Jacinto/J.Knight are 2-8 together at the current stand. She owns the 6th best Tomlinson distance rating (279). #11 Bien Wild (9-2) drops to the bottom level for the first time, and Gonzalez/Savoie are a profitable 27% together overall. She has been part of the trifecta in 3 of 6 local starts.

LAD 6 (Clm-5/3L, LA-bred 3up, 6.5f) #1 AMAN AMONG MEN (8-1) has claiming price cut in half after faltering in a local route last time. Floyd Pitzer is 3-8 route/sprint, and Donnie Meche hops aboard the early/pressing rail-sitter. #10 Buddy And Ben (3-1) was a solid 2nd as the 7-2 fav in a quickly run race versus similar local sprinters on Sept. 21st. Jacinto/Sam David Jr. 26% together here. #11 Out Of Autumn (8-1) is an Evangeline shipper for Shawn David, who is 26% with this type of layoff runner. Early/pressing type removes the hood for this.

LAD 7 (Clm-15/3L, 3up, 8T) #3 UNBRIDLED SKY (5-2) returns to a preferred turf route and reunites with winning pilot John Jacinto. His BSF’s are on par with what it takes to win at this level, so the drop seems right. #4 Mad and Royal (2-1) has won his last two local turf races from off the pace. Melancon/Breaux are 5-15 together here. #10 Pure Rock (7-2) finished an even 4th at 7.5f last time. He was a good 2nd at this flat mile turf distance on Aug. 15th, and he’ll be grinding away late for PVal/Morris Nicks.

LAD 8 (Clm-5k, 3up, 7f) #12 FAIRMONT (7-5) earned a quality 82 BSF in a starter allowance place finish here last time, and he was flattered when winner Hello Ladies came back to win another starter allowance sprint on Sunday. He romped by 5-lengths at this course, distance, and level on July 18th, and anything approaching his last would be more than enough to get the job done for leading trainer Jorge Lara. He sports a best of 17 local 3f blowout bullet for this. #7 Seventy Two Reno (6-1) was 3rd, beaten a length at 6f here last time. His last win was a 5.25 length tally at this distance on Aug. 21st. Robert Husak is a profitable claiming dirt sprint trainer, and Carlos Gonzalez hops aboard. #11 Hemi Power (3-1) exits a good looking 3-length 6.5f tally off a layoff, and show finisher Old Chunk of Coal came back to win his next start here. He likes this distance and owns an all or nothing local record. Dangerous if able to run two alike.

LAD 9 (Clm-5k, f&m 3up, 1mile-70yds) #9 KISS THE SUN (7-2) has been my top pick in her last two, a win at this distance on Sept. 7th and a place finish at 6f last time. Jorge Lara is 20% sprint/route, and barn $$ rider L.Meche strings along. The leading owner/trainer have a string of live runners on tap today. #8 Piney Rock (6-1) drops in class and switches surfaces for PVal/Morris Nicks. Late running rebound candidate is a 2-time course and distance winner. #10 Cold and Windswept (3-1) gets away from red hot 6 and 5-time meet winners Farasino and Illuminique. She drops to rock bottom and should run a quality off the pace race, but note that she shows no wins in 2007-08.

LAD 10 (OC-16/1x, f&m 3up, 5T) #3 ISLAND CLUB (10-1) has fired in all six dirt sprint starts, including three straight wins. She owns fine early/pressing speed for the profitable Amanda Crandall/Brent Kennedy team, and she is out of 3-8 debut turf sire Exciting Story. #11 Devilish Kris (3-1) was 2nd to sharp turf sprinter Serrano in a similar spot on Aug. 31st. Jacinto hops aboard the versatile miss. #1 Maggie’s Agenda (5-1) steps up off a sharp prominent throughout 3.75 length 2L tally at this course/distance on Oct. 2nd. Improving miss has won 2 straight for profitable trainer Shane Wilson.

LAD 11 (Mcl-15k, 3-4-5yo f&m, 7f) #8 JEREMANTHA (7-2) earned a decent 50 BSF in distant 4th place finish MSW bow, and place finisher Shoppin Shirley came back to score. Joe Duhon is 22% with 2nd timers, and Jacinto hops aboard. #11 Sexy Walk (3-1) was my top on the turf last time, and she was spanked by fav St. Tribute. Her best effort was a length defeat at this course/distance on Aug. 23rd. Another PVal/Morris Nicks contender. #6 Karens Magic Shoes (8-1) drops back in for a tag and adds blinkers. She rallied for the show in her maiden claiming bow, and she was up the track behind Angel in Charge last time, and that one came back to score again.

Early/pressing types dominated on both surfaces. I had four top choices get the job done, including $15 best bet Sefas Belle in the grassy 8th.
Sam David Jr.’s son Shawn had a fine day, as he saddled FTS Queen Janine to a fine place finish, and he found the winners’ circle in the next race with Ax Man ($24.20).

Saturday Recap

Early/pressing types dominated on both surfaces. I had four top choices get the job done, including $15 best bet Sefas Belle in the grassy 8th.

Sam David Jr.’s son Shawn had a fine day, as he saddled FTS Queen Janine to a fine place finish, and he found the winners’ circle in the next race with Ax Man ($24.20).

Another sharp turf win for Autobeacat, and he has a nice rivalry going with Diggy Fresh. They ran 1-2 today, and Autobecat beat that one over yielding ground in the $100k World Series of Poker. Diggy Fresh beat his rival by a head in the $100k Shiskabob on Aug. 2nd. Maybe they will meet again at the upcoming Fair Grounds meet.

Texas Birdstone pulled off a sharp wire job in the Razorback Futurity under Donnie Meche. The Steve Asmussen trainee blitzed six furlongs in 1:11.07 and paid $3.60.

Rico Flores/Tim Dixon teamed up for a pair of winners on the card, including Dona’s Diva in the $50k Lady Razorback Futurity. Hat trick for John Jacinto. Kirk Leblanc and Donnie Meche both booted home a pair.

Pick 6 carryover into 10-12-08: $2,095 (races 5-10)

LAD 1 (Mcl-5k, 3-4-5yo, 6f) #6 DAPHNE’S MAGIC (7-2) earned an above par BSF (55) in the slop when dropped to this level last time. He sports a best of 29 local fast track bullet since (:4f, :47-3/5 H), and he figures on the pace throughout for the productive Verenzuela/Bob Young team. #3 Point Minister (5-1) was wide throughout and just failed to last while well clear of the show in a local route from post 11 on Sept. 26th. He finished 2nd in a 7f sprint on June 21st, and he figures to make his presence felt in the lane under fav pilot Carlos Gonzalez. #8 Popnhammer (4-1) was fractious at the gate in his 4-1 bow. He ran a much improved race 2nd time out after hopping at the start, and place finisher Margarita City came back to win. He adds blinkers and drops to bottom maiden claiming level (from $10k).

LAD 2 (Mcl-5k, LA-bred 3-4-5yo, 1mile-70yds) #11 GERARD’S WISH (4-1) rallied through traffic to finish 2nd behind romping winner Schex’s First Kiss on Sept. 14th. He has improved since dropping to the bottom level on Aug. 31st, and he has shown running style versatility in the past. #7 Freedom’s Gold (6-1) was stuck out in post 11 over a good main track off a layoff in same race my top exits last time. He had traffic woes in a 6th place finish for $7.5k on July 26th, and he finished a clear 2nd behind a runaway winner when stalking the pace for $10k before that. 0-16 gelding retains hustling apprentice Dugas, and he would be best served on or near the lead in this pace puzzler. #9 Western Cause (7-2) is out of 11% debut sire Western Echo, and dam has thrown a winner. George Northrop Jr. is 19% FTS and 30% (3-10) debut maiden claiming.

LAD 3 (Clm-15/2L, f&m 3up, 8T) #2 BAFFIN (9-2) probably needed his last from an outer post versus similar. He lands a cozy post today, and there should be some pace to chase this time around. She was 3rd behind a pair of subsequent winners in an off the turf 7f event on Aug. 9th, and she did graduate at this course/distance from post 2 in June. #7 Madame Elle (9-5) deserves to be favored in this spot. She owns fine early/pressing speed and exits a solid place finish versus similar local turf company. Her turf BSF’s continue to climb. #10 Kipper Time (5-2) gets in lighter with apprentice Dugas. She stopped to last as the fav versus similar from post 11 on Sept. 25th. 1-17 miss is 0-6 this year and o-3 over the local turf course. Owns a versatile running style.

LAD 4 (Mcl-15k, 2yo, 6.5f) #11 SECRET OF A KING (9-2) removed the blinkers and finished an improved 3rd when dropped back in for a tag at 6f here last time. Leblanc sticks, and a slight forward move might be enough to get the job done. #9 City Win (4-1) drops out of the MSW ranks. He flashed speed and faded in 2 starts, and he rallied in his other outing, so he has shown something in each of his starts versus better. #3 Margo’s Venture (7-2) rallied to finish an okay 4th in her debut versus similar. Jerry Cart is 17% with 2nd timers, and he struck with a romping 2nd time starter on Friday (Sea the Soldier).

LAD 5 (OC-16/1x, 3up, 5T) #3 EAGLE TWO HUNDRED (5-2) defeated similar turf sprinters from post 10 last time. Note that he raced for the $16k tag on Sept. 1st, but trainer John Locke protects him under the allowance conditions today. Donnie Meche hops aboard, and he should be tracking the pace from the outset. #1 Make Money Quick (4-1) earned an above par BSF (89) in romping course/distance maiden breaker on Aug. 7th. He failed to go a route of ground in his first start versus winners on the main, and he was a solid 3rd in the slop last time. He sports a best of 59 bullet for this and looms the one to catch from the rail under new pilot Jacinto, who is 38% with leading trainer Jorge Lara. #10 Parker Run (3-1) has been part of the exacta in 4 straight and 6 of his last 7 turf sprint tries. 7yo gelding is up from the $10k claiming ranks, but he has plenty of back class to call upon, and Lonnie Meche chose him over my 2nd choice Make Money Quick.

LAD 6 (Mcl-5k, 3-4-5yo, 6f) #8 MY MASTER STIR (5-1) earned vastly improved pace figs in an above par place finish at 7f last time. 0-19 gelding attracts PVal, and anything approaching his last would make his a strong prominent throughout presence. #5 Huffy Rudy (3-1) has been competitive versus 10k & 12.5k company recently, so the drop to the 5k level clearly makes him a contender. Donnie Meche hops aboard the versatile runner. #2 Blue Trace (7-2) has not been seen since March, and trainer Ronnie Ward finally saddled a winner recently. John Jacinto hops aboard the 20k dropper. #10 Hesarowdy (12-1) stopped on a dime from post 12 in an extended sprint at less than 5-1 last time. He drops to the bottom level for the first time, and his early/pressing speed makes him a pace factor at the very least.

LAD 7 (MSW, 3-4-5yo, 7.5T) #3 ROCKITTOWN (9-5) was necked at 4-1 when switched to the turf in the state bred ranks last time. He reunites with top local turf rider Donnie Meche. He owns early/pressing versatility to go along with a favorable post position. #2 Tepin Salsa (3-1) rallied for the place in his dirt sprint bow, and he rallied through traffic to finish a respectable 4th at a flat mile on the turf last time. #8 Deputy’s Lariat (4-1) debuts for the 36% PVal/Mouton team. Barn is a profitable 16% FTS and first turf, and I like the looks of his Sept. 13th and Oct. 3rd drills.

LAD 8 (Str-Alw, 3up, 6.5f) #6 JACK’S LIL BIT (12-1) was a sharp $5k course/distance winner on Aug. 31st, and his effort was flattered when today’s 5-2 fav Hello Ladies came back to win a 6f starter allowance with an 82 BSF. Jerry Hardin is 20% with this type of short layoff runner. The versatile 2-time LAD winner attracts Dupuis, who is 2-7 with this barn. #4 Hello Ladies (5-2) got the job done as my best bet on Sept. 14th, and a similar stalking effort would make him tough to deny. PVal sticks with the Morris Nicks runner, and he’s a 3-time winner at this distance. #10 Dusty Tunnel (3-1) goes turf/dirt and route/sprint for Charles Hukill. 8-time local winner is 3-8 at 6.5f. An outside stalk and pounce trip is anticipated.

LAD 9 (OC-16/1x, LA-bred 3up, 8.5T) #1 HALLOWED MISSIONS (9-2) was headed out of 3rd in a stakes race originally scheduled for the turf last time, and winner Lee’s Spirit came back to nab another stakes event in his next outing. He earned his diploma at this distance on the turf, and expect a nice late run from the cozy rail under PVal. #7 Lite the Cigar (2-1) finished up the track in a race originally scheduled for the turf when last seen On Aug. 22nd. James Hudson is 21% with this type of layoff runner, and L.Meche is 2-7 with this outfit. He clearly does his best work on the turf with a debut win at 7.5f and a neck defeat at this distance on Aug. 1st. #5 Hungarian Cat (12-1) failed to fire in first start versus winners on the main last time. He rolled by 9.5 lengths to earn his diploma at a flat mile on the turf on Sept. 1st, and he figures to attempt a wire job over his fav surface under hustling apprentice Dustin Dugas.

LAD 10 (MSW, LA-bred 2yo, 6.5f) #2 SEFAPIANO JR. (20-1) broke slow from outer posts in his first two local starts. He sports a good looking 3f bullet work for this, and Robert Schultz is 25% first blinkers. #7 Choctaw Bill (7-2) earned improved pace figs in a show finish at 7f off a layoff here last time. He was headed before that, and regular pilot Jose Riquelme has options with the consistent, versatile sort. #3 Jake the Cat (10-1) had troubled beginnings in both of his local sprints. He overcame a pinched start to finish 3rd in his debut, but he never got involved at 7-2 last time. Jacinto sticks with the Mouton runner, and I want to see what he can do with an alert start.

Leading rider Don Simington surpassed the century mark this week as he continues to pad his lead with five days remaining in the meet. He won a pair of Thursday and a trio on Friday.

Sea the Soldier (race 5), a two-year-old Simington/Cart 2nd timer, rolled by almost 20 lengths despite being a handful in the early going.

A pair of turf wins on Friday for Kirk Leblanc, including a walk in the park 3-5 score aboard talented state bred mare Tortuga Flats.

LAD 1 (Clm-5k, f&m 3up, 6f) #11 BLACK GIRAFFE (6-1) drops to the bottom level for the first time, and she projects an outside stalking trip under Rico Flores, who is a profitable 11% with Tim Dixon. #4 Barbi’s Misty (2-1) exits a sharp 3L wire job at 5.5f, and show finisher Two Jays Hugger came back to win her next start. Gonzalez/Locke 2-4 together here, and she looms the one to catch in the opener. Note that she has never tried this distance. #3 Chessa Fair (4-1) was an even 4th versus similar last time, and she was stuck out in post 10 before that. Todd Dupuis hops aboard, and he’s a profitable 17% with trainer Harold Hahn. Stalking type has earned all 3 career wins here, but note that she is 0-9 at this distance.

LAD 2 (Mcl-5k, LA-bred f&m 3up, 1mile-70yds) #8 DON’T MENTION IT (7-2) ran a vastly improved race when stretched out in distance off a layoff last time, and she does own a solid distance Tomlinson (345), so she figured to handle added real estate. Shane Wilson reaches out for Carlos Gonzalez today, and they are a profitable 2-6 together at the current meet. She figures in the hunt throughout, and anything approaching her last makes her a viable speed threat. #7 Almostaberry Mary (20-1) owns a promising route pedigree, and she has been stuck out in post 10, 10, and 13 in her last 3 sprint starts. #4 My Special Love (9-5) is 0-19 with 6 place finishes, and she has finished 2nd in both of her local routes. PVal sticks, and trainer Ray Spencer shows a profit in several relevant categories, including turf/dirt and maiden claiming dirt routes.

LAD 3 (Clm-5/2L, LA-bred 3up, 6f) #3 PAPPY’S BOY (7-2) has shown marked improvement since moving to the John Lock barn. He was a strong 2nd behind T Kettle at 7f on Aug. 31st, than came back to break his maiden in style at 6f last time. Barn is 20% with horses attempting a repeat, and Saenz is 1-4 with this outfit. He owns the right stalking style to succeed in this spot. #6 Doyline Bubba (3-1) was well-beaten 7th in 10k/2L spot last time, but he did finish a solid 2nd for 5k on Aug. 14th. Carlos Gonzalez hops aboard the stalk and pounce type. #11 Southern Soprano (6-1) could not carry his dangerous speed 7f last time, but this shorter trip should allow him to last longer. Robert Husak shows a profit in claiming dirt sprints, and Jose Riquelme is a profitable 15% with this barn.

LAD 4 (Mcl-30k, LA-bred 2yo fil, 6f) #9 EXQUISITE DEELITES (9-2) broke slow from rail and rallied to finish 4th in local bow, than had another troubled start in an extended sprint 2nd time out. Both races were in state bred MSW ranks, and now she runs in a claimer for the first time for the 22% Gonzalez/Loy team. #5 G Licious (3-1) debuts for Bret Calhoun, and he’s 21% FTS and 25% debut maiden claiming. $17k purchase attracts Jacinto and could hit the ground running. #3 Pal’s Dream (7-2) finished 2nd when dropped into a maiden claimer for the first time on Sept. 13th. She figures to flash speed at the very least under Shane Laviolette.

LAD 5 (Clm-15/2L, 3up, 7f) #6 DOT’S IMP (5-2) has claiming price slashed from $30k to $15k, and note that his lone win was off a layoff. EJ Perrodin got to know him last time, and he won 3 races with Pat Mouton last week and another yesterday. Barn 20% with this type of layoff runner. #2 J J’s Bud (9-5) has finished in front of my top twice at the current stand, and he has earned above par BSF’s in last three starts. Probably the one to catch under Carlos Gonzalez. #9 Stormy Summer (12-1) split the field in a needed local 6f race for new trainer Tim Ice on Sept. 18th. He ran a few decent races in Florida earlier this year, including sharp 6.5f maiden breaker at Calder in May. Donnie Meche strings along, and he can go better 2nd off a layoff.

LAD 6 (Alw-32k, LA-bred 3up, 8T) #3 AUTOBEACAT (1-1) has been part of the exacta in all 5 local starts this year, 2 wins and a 2nd on the main and a win and a head defeat on the turf. His recent turf BSF’s are better than his dirt speed figs, and he was visually impressive in $100k World Series of Poker triumph. He exits rock solid place finish behind Jonesboro in $150k Tiznow on the main. #9 Diggy Fresh (5-1) got up to beat my top by a head on Aug. 2nd, and Autobeacat turned the tables on him over yielding ground on Aug. 23rd. Bourgeois is 25% with this type of layoff runner, and Billy Patin is 21% with this barn. He sports an Evangeline bullet for this. #1 Stoney Gold (15-1) has been in fine dirt sprint form at the current meet, and he was an okay 3rd in lone turf try, a local 5f MSW event in Aug. ’07. PVal hops aboard the early/pressing rail-sitter as D.Meche sticks with my top. Might get brave if able to sneak away early.

LAD 7 ($50k Lady Razorback Futurity, Ark-Bred 2yo fil, 6f) #6 DONA’S DIVA (6-1) rallied to finish a solid 3rd in MSW bow at this course/distance. Tim Dixon is 2-5 first lasix, and Rico Flores is a profitable 11% with this barn here. #10 Proper Prize (4-1) hopped at the start and raced wide in Ellis Park bow, than came back to post a sharp wire-to-wire score at Turfway (polytrack). Bob Holthus gives Kirk Leblanc a leg up, and she could get brave if able to shake loose early. #1A Scamp And A Half (7-2) graduated nicely in Mcl-25k dirt sprint bow at LS on June 1st. She was 3rd to Smokin Again and Run Don’t Stroll in local turf sprint stakes 2nd time out, than was 8th in another turf stakes, this time a flat mile when last seen on Aug. 16th. She attracts PVal and should appreciate a return to the dirt sprint game.

LAD 8 (OC-16/1x, LA-bred f&m 3up, 8.5T) #7 SEFAS BELLE (7-2) dueled and weakened in a main track route last time. She has been right there in all 4 local turf starts, including romping wire job maiden win on July 11th. She looks like the controlling speed today. #3 Awesome Amazon (7-2) got the job done for me at 7.5f off a layoff on Sept. 18th, and she projects a similar ground saving stalking trip under Donnie Meche. #5 Classic Mirage (9-5) is available for the $16k tag. She won an OC-30/2x race last time, and she was not up for sale that day. Late running underlay for PVal/Joe Duhon.

LAD 9 ($50k Razorback Futurity, Ark-Bred 2yo, 6f) #3 MARVELOUS THUNDER (5-1) was off slow and wide in 7.5f turf bow, and he did make a middle move that day. I like the rider upgrade to John Jacinto, who is 1-1 overall with William Hornsby. #8 Chadnjamie (7-2) won a local maiden claiming sprint to kick off his career. He was over his head in last place finish versus Bertsgoldenmissile and suqsequent stakes winner City Style last time. Prominent throughout for the 22% Gonzalez/Loy team. #1A Texas Birdstone (3-1) was distant 4th behind a runaway winner in 1:10 flat at Remington last time. Asmussen trainee attracts D.Meche and fits with these.

LAD 10 (MSW, 2yo fil, 8.5T) #8 SENTIMENTAL GAL (12-1) owns a fine turf route pedigree (More Than Ready-Caerleon), and Cheryl Asmussen is a profitable 15% with FTS and an impressive 31% first turf. She worked over the Retama turf on Oct. 8th. #7 My Spanx (1-1) was 4th and 3rd in a pair of turf stakes races recently. She was 4th in a MSW 7.5f turf race at LS before that. She was 4-wide on both turns behind impressive runaway winner Abbott Hall last time. #3 Get A Victory (7-2) is out of a turf winning Cozzene mare, so she figures to handle the sod. Bret Calhoun is 21% FTS and 19% First turf.

by Jarrod Horak (Harrah’s Louisiana Downs Track Handicapper/TV Host)

Congrats to jockey Pat Valenzuela on 4,000 career wins. He hit the milestone in Thursday’s grassy 2nd aboard Burst of Light.

LAD 1 (Clm-5/2L, LA-bred f&m 3up, 6f) #2 HEAVEN’S PROMISE (6-1) broke 11th of 14 last time, and she showed marked improvement rallying from 5th to grab the lead in the lane. She ended up 2nd, beaten a length, and that was her first start without blinkers. She graduated in wire-to-wire fashion at this distance in May, and she showed the ability to pass horses for the first time on Aug. 27th. #1 Ali’s Next Chance (10-1) was wide 3rd from post 10 in last 5f start at Evangeline. She lands cozy rail today. Note that she is 0-4 at 6f, but she drew post 13 off a layoff at this distance in May, and she caught the slop in her other 6f race this year. She is a better filly now, and I will give her another chance to excel at 6f. #11 Brightstarrywalk (3-1) dives in class for the productive Dugas/Hukill team. She projects an outside stalking trip and could wake up in this easier spot.

LAD 2 (Clm-15/2L, f&m 3up, 7f) #4 PYRITE GHOST (8-1) ran the best race of her career in course/distance maiden breaker on June 29th, and she was the only off the pace type to score over that speed biased oval. She has routed 4 times since, 3 on the turf, and she did make a nice middle move in an originally scheduled for turf claimer on Sept. 7th. She is back at her winning distance for 22% turf/dirt trainer Connie Daniels. #3 Angel in Charge (3-1) earned an above par speed rating in sharp MSW score on Sept. 18th. Leading rider Simington hops aboard, and Balderas is a profitable 12% with horses attempting a repeat. Must navigate another furlong in first start versus winners. #2 Hannia’s Gold (7-2) is now under the care of Cody Autrey, and he’s 21% with new additions to his barn, 25% with this type of layoff runner, and 25% route/sprint. She has been competitive from 5.5f to 8.5f, so this extended sprint seems just about right.

LAD 3 (Clm-5/3L, 3up, 6f) #1 GAME PLAY’S ICON (4-1) was just a tick below the wining par for this in a $10k/3L place finish when last seen on July 24th at 6f here. She is back in the WT Howard barn, and Kirk Leblanc is 20% with this outfit. #11 Matty B (3-1) earned a quality BSF (64) in clear place finish here last time, and show finisher Villagecreek Park came back to score. PVal hops aboard for the recently hot John Locke. #7 House Note (5-1) was 3rd from post 11 behind a pair of subsequent winners (Mr. Grumpy Stripes, Fast and Steady) when last seen on Aug. 9th. Calhoun is 22% with this type of layoff runner, and Lonnie Meche is 20% with this outfit. Note that he was a vet scratch on Sept. 6th.

LAD 4 (Clm-5k, f&m 3up, 1mile-70yds) #2 MYSTERY MANOR (5-2) stretches out 3rd race off a layoff, and Dugas/Schmidt are 2-5 together here. She ran well in both of her fast track flat mile starts. She was away from the gate in 11th in last pair, and I would like to see her get away in better order. #6 Play It Safe (5-2) has won her last two convincingly, including above par romping local 2L route tally when last seen on Aug. 10th. Dewaine Loy has cooled off since scorching August, and why did it takes this 3yo filly so long to return? Mixed signals on the speedy underlay. #1 Sue Can Do (6-1) was a length ahead of my top at 7f last time, and she did graduate in a local route. PVal hops aboard the late running Joe Duhon charge.

LAD 5 (Mcl-15k, 2yo, 6.5f) #11 SEA THE SOLDIER (4-1) finished a wide 7th of 12 from post 10 in 5f $25k debut at 7-2, and place finisher Stan Michael L came back to score. Added distance probably helps, but he drew an outer post again. Cart is 17% with 2nd timers, and barn $$ rider Simington strings along. He sports five works for this and could go better this time around. #1 Full Scrimmage (12-1) faced the likes of Zigaree, Bertsgoldenmissile and Expect A Flyer in his two MSW starts this meet. Today’s class relief does wonders, and I like the rider upgrade to PVal. #3 Long (3-1) debuts for Al Stall Jr., and he’s 22% FTS and 17% debut maiden claiming. Donnie Meche is 31% with this outfit, and his 12 published works date back to May 24th at Keeneland.

LAD 6 (Clm-5k, 3up, 1mile-70yds) #5 THE TWO YOUTHS (8-1) lands his best post of the entire meet. He was an even 4th from post 11 last time, and he got the job done from outside post on Sept. 6th. PVal hops aboard the pace presser. #4 Lake GP (5-2) drops and switches surfaces for Pat Mouton, and note that he was stuck out in post 11 on turf last time. Barn 20% 2nd time back, and EJ Perrodin struck three times with Mouton last week. #2 Melbas Slew (2-1) wired similar for new barn last time, but she has been a vet scratch a few times during the current meet, and I do not trust her to run two alike at this bottom level, especially at low odds. #3 Spruce Jr. (8-1) has hit the board in 7 of his last 8 local starts, and he frequently goes off at decent odds. Late runner is probably good for a share once again. #7 Chases Comet (9-2) has hit the board in last 2 versus similar, and he’ll be rallying with Spruce Jr.

LAD 7 (OC-30/2x, 3up, 8T) #6 BRITISH MEDIUM (8-5) has run well in both local starts for Al Stall Jr., a show finish at 6f and a gritty win in an originally scheduled for turf route on Sept. 5th. Note that place finisher (Captain Above) from last came back to score. Well bred colt graduated in a Hollywood turf sprint in June. #5 Pursue A Dream (2-1) is a consistent flat mile turf performer, and the stakes placed 3yo gelding runs for the $30k tag in this spot. #4 Hookum Fish (15-1) is 0-6 on turf but has been competitive over the local green. He was an even 4th at 7.5f last time, and he was DQ’d from 2nd behind undefeated Hi Ho Cheerio on Aug. 14th. He was 3rd behind decent runners Ball Hall and Must Be He before that.

LAD 8 (OC-30/2x, LA-bred 3up, 6f) #2 KAT’S COURT (8-1) cuts back to her best distance and switches to barn $$ rider EJ Perrodin. Pat Mouton runner projects the right ground saving stalking trip. #4 Mr. Porter (3-1) will get some pace to chase but he typically settles for minor awards. All three career wins at this distance, and new pilot Lonnie Meche rode him well in April. #1 Double Quebrado (5-1) has early/pressing speed and could fall into a perfect tracking trip from the cozy rail. Riquelme is riding well here, and he sports a local bullet for this.

LAD 9 (Alw-32k, LA-bred 3up, 8T) #7 TORTUGA FLATS (4-5) is a win machine at a mile on the turf. She exits a $100k local turf stakes tally versus open company, and she figures to beat these state breds with her typical strong outing. #4 Suzy Zip (3-1) is 3-3 over the local weeds and 2-2 at this distance. Talented 3yo filly will have to kick it up a few notches to upend the fav, but the Sam David Jr. trainee has defeated older open foes in the past, and her task is not impossible. #8 Mi Isabella (20-1) is also trained by Sam David Jr. She has struggled in 5 starts this year, but she had a productive 2007, and new pilot EJ Perrodin rode her well last July. Maybe she can turn it around if able to sit back early and make a strong late run.

LAD 10 (MSW, LA-bred 3-4-5yo f&m, 6f) #10 LIKE NO OTHER (5-1) was less than 6-1 in wet fast Evangeline bow, and she finished an okay 6th of 9 in that open MSW affair. Wes Hawley has her now, and he’s 31% with new additions to his barn. Leading rider Don Simington takes the call, and he’s 35% with this outfit. #12 Winter Hot Flash (6-1) was off slow in a place finish here last out, and she probably would have wired the field with a clean beginning. When trainer Michael Antwine sends out a live runner, today’s pilot PVal is typically aboard. #6 De Naskra Wind (7-2) finished a solid 2nd in her 7f fast track bow, than failed to handle the slop 2nd time out. Sam David Jr. 25% with this type of layoff runner, and she gets in lighter with apprentice Dugas.

Sunday (10-5-08) LA Downs Recap

Both surfaces played fair on Sunday, and note that there were no wire jobs on the main.

I had a nice $38.40 winner in the grassy 4th (Ante Go Go), and the angle was a sharp dirt horse with a fine turf pedigree.

Keith Bourgeois saddled a pair of turf winners. PVal was blanked once again, and he remains one win shy of 4,000 career wins. He is named to ride six horses on Thursday.

Donnie Meche, Lonnie Meche, and Jose Riquelme each booted home five winners last week. The resurgent Steve Asmussen saddled a trio of winners, and the aforementioned Donnie Meche rode all three. EJ Perrodin/Pat Mouton teamed up for three wins on the week as well. Leading trainer Jorge Lara found the winners’ circle four more times. Donnie Meche/Al Stall Jr. teamed up for a pair on Thursday.

We had six wire jobs on the turf last week, but the rails were down, and speed typically holds better under those circumstances. Leading rider Don Simington booted home a trio of turf winners last week, including a pair with trainer Jerry Hardin. Jose Riquelme rode two turf sprint winners. As noted earlier, trainer Keith Bourgeois saddled a pair of grass winners on Sunday.

LAD 1 (Clm-5/3L, f&m 3up, 6f) #7 MAGGIES A GOLD DIGGER (7-2) employed new rating tactics en route to a sharp three-length tally in the 2L ranks at this course/distance last time. Jacinto/Locke are 30% together here, and barn saddled a pair of winners here last week. #2 Jone’s Doll (2-1) drops, turns back, and switches surfaces following a troubled journey in a $30k turf sprint on Sept. 21st. She earned her diploma at this course/distance in June. D.Meche has booted the early/pressing type home twice. #10 Krisie Miss Whiz (5-2) weakened to 3rd after carving out the splits in an extended sprint last time. She was claimed out of that heat by Jim Gaston, and leading rider Don Simington hops aboard the wire job threat. #8 Prairie (5-2) woke up with a decent place finish at 7f last time, but note that she shows no wins in 2007 & 2008 and is probably best used underneath.

LAD 2 (OC-30/2x, f&m 3up, 8T) Turf rails at 20 feet this week. #6 MISS PATSY (5-2) is a sharp early/pressing sort exiting an off the turf wire job. She graduated at this course/distance in June, and she has fared well against some tough company since, including a place finish behind recent $50k Fiesta Mile winner Pretty Squall. She was a decent 3rd in last turf outing on Aug. 10th, and note that place finisher Rose Medallion won a 1x turf race here last Thursday. #2 Serrano (7-2) won both of her local turf sprint starts, and the promising three-year-old filly tries a route of ground today. She lands the cozy rail and retains top local turf rider Donnie Meche. She is bred to go at least this far and has the proper running style to succeed at a flat mile. #8 Cinnamon Strike (2-1) exits a fine place finish in a local 7.5f turfer off a layoff. L.Meche/Wes Hawley 31% together, and note that this one is entered for the $30k tag. She is 1-7 overall on grass, and note that both of her wins showing on the DRF past performance page were accomplished over a fast main track. Must overcome outside post.

LAD 3 (Mcl-5k, 3-4-5yo f&m, 5f) #6 LIVE LIFE OUTLOUD (2-1) raced wide in her MSW bow at the Spa, than came back and pressed the pace before giving way in a $25k maiden claiming dirt sprint at that same venue for Todd Pletcher. Larry Robideaux Jr. has her now, and he’s 21% with new additions to his barn and 44% with the blinkers off move. Check out that best of 41 local 4f bullet for this, and she could be the one to give PVal that elusive 4,000th win. #1 Lou Too (15-1) overcame a bad start to finish a decent 4th in $5k Evangeline bow. She stopped in a 7f MSW event last time. She drops back to her claimed level and attracts Simington. #3 U Dazzleum (9-2) owns early/pressing speed and has hit the board in 4 of 7 lifetime starts. She broke slow and failed to threaten when dropped to this level in lone start at Evangeline this year.

LAD 4 (Clm-10/3L, LA-bred f&m 3up, 8.5f) #4 EASYFARTHISLADY (9-2) exits a decent place finish behind a runaway winner in a local extended sprint. Both of her wins have come around two turns, including sharp 2L tally here off a layoff under today’s pilot C.Gonzalez. #7 Bad Beat (6-1) was a respectable 5th of 12 in Evangeline 6f prep off a layoff. Riquelme is riding well here, and the off the pace type rates a shot if the track continues to play fair. #1A Punish Work (2-1) has hit the board in four straight, and she has been on the wrong side of the photo in last pair. Note that she is 0-6 this year, 0-5 here, and 0-7 on fast dirt. Simington strings along, and he’s 0-8 with Joe Duhon. #1 Filly in Pink (2-1) exits a 5k/2L win at 7f, and she’ll be closing under PVal.

LAD 5 (Mcl-25k, 3-4-5yo f&m, 8T) #1 GI GI GAL (6-1) was 3-2 in her long ago dirt sprint bow, and she was off for more than 10 months after that disappointing 4th place effort. She was claimed out of her debut and returned in a local turf route, but she failed to threaten from post 12 that day. She lands the cozy rail and can go much better this time around. Note that T.Dupuis/M.Lovell teamed up to win turf race here last week with Dynamite Babe. #9 Crafty Chestnut (9-5) was wide in traffic when switched to turf 2nd time out. She had a speed/fade trip last time and can improve for profitable 25% layoff trainer Sam David Jr. New pilot Simington won three turf races here last week. #4 Holli’s Brickhouse (8-5) has hit the board in both of her local turf races, and she was 5.5 lengths clear of Crafty Chestnut when last seen in July. Barn 1-22 with this type of layoff runner. Late running threat.

LAD 6 (Clm-5/3L, 3up, 8.5f) #12 ISLE REPO IT (4-1) stretches back out and reunites with barn $$ rider Jacinto. There is not much pace in the paper race, and he might try to clear these from outside post. #5 Old Chunk of Coal (9-2) was a wide 3rd and earned an above par speed rating from post 10 in a local 6.5f sprint last time. He stretches back out in his 3rd race off a layoff for the productive Dugas/Hukill team. #7 Gorge (2-1) drops to his lowest level off a layoff. Billy Patin is 1-3 with new trainer James Fugate, and this one does own running style versatility.

LAD 7 (Mcl-15k, 2yo fil, 6.5f) #5 RARE ANGEL (15-1) drops from the state bred MSW ranks, and she did make a middle move in her Sept. 4th bow. Rosier/Tim Ice teamed up for a longshot maiden winner a couple of weeks ago (Amber Star), and this one removes the hood and could show more at this level. I picked this jockey/trainer combo in Sunday’s finale, and they finished a solid 3rd at 4-1 with Senor Romeo. #8 Katy Crypto (9-2) debuts for 30% local trainer Brian House, and he’s 4-8 with FTS and 3-6 with debut maiden claimers. Cody Meche 21% with this barn here. #6 Mione (3-1) makes her career debut for Bob Young, and he’s 18% with FTS. She’s been working here since April, and Jose Verenzuela is 20% with this outfit.

LAD 8 (Clm-15/2L, 3up, 8T) #9 CLEAN UP (2-1) Goes from Asmussen to Hudson and is tagged for the first time. Gets the leading rider, and note that he was a troubled 6th behind Super Derby also-ran Numismatist in his lone turf outing. #4 Nootka Sound (5-2) drops and returns to turf for the 28% Leblanc/.Irwin team. He figures to flash speed at the very least, but note that his lone win was over yielding ground at 5.5f. #13 Mister Jimmy (3-1) and/or #14 King Caden (7-2) deserve respect if able to draw in from AE list.

LAD 9 (OC-30/2x, LA-bred 3up, 6f) #3 CRAZYFROMTHEGITGO (10-1) receives a rider upgrade to Jacinto. Off the pace miss should get pace to chase and enters in decent form. Jerry Hardin saddled a pair of winners here last week. #6 Pure Bandit (7-2) won at Evangeline over wet fast ground when last seen in August. Pat Mouton is 20% with this type of layoff runner, and Kerwin Clark is 39% overall with this barn. She’s a 2-time local winner. #2 A Little Tipsy (3-1) has run into talented stakes performer Superior Storm in 3 of last 4 at Evangeline. Versatile runner retains Patin, who is 23% overall with this barn, and Victor Arceneaux is a profitable 23% route/sprint.

LAD 10 (OC-16/1x, 3up, 6f) #5 NEVILL’S MISTAKE (7-2) has improved with blinkers and PVal in his last pair, and he is the one to catch in this spot. Ray Sibille is a profitable 18% with this type of short layoff runner. #10 Danseur’s Gold (4-1) has been part of exacta in last four and has earned above par speed ratings in last pair. Mark Guidry has him now, and let’s see if he can run a quality race away from Evangeline. #2 Final War (5-1) was a prompt 6-5 winner for Tom Amoss in his long ago Mountaineer bow, and place finisher came back to score. James Hodges has him now, and he’s 25% with new additions to his barn. He sports a strong best of 70 gate bullet for this, and it is good to see him returning without a for sale sign.

LAD 11 (Mcl-5k, LA-bred 3-4-5yo, 6.5f) #5 NORTHERN FIRE (4-1) returns to the state bred ranks and drops back to the bottom level. He sports a pair of works since his last and tries to rebound following a pair of unplaced 7.5k races as the beaten fav. #2 Puzzle Passage (7-2) clearly hates an off track, so you can draw a line through his last. He was 2nd in three straight local fast track sprint starts before that. Simington/Hardin teamed up for two wins here last week. #12 Go Doeny Go (5-1) drops to his lowest level. He has experience with tough posts, as he set the pace and finished 3rd from post 13 in a $10k Evangeline event on July 12th.

by Jarrod Horak (Harrah’s Louisiana Downs Track Handicapper/TV Host)

Nice ride by apprentice and September rider of the month Dustin Dugas aboard Lil Miss Pynes in Saturday’s 2nd. She was off a beat slow, but her jockey stayed patient, and she made a steady wide advance and won nicely as my bet down 2-1 top. That was his 4th win for trainer Ray Shumake recently. Dugas came right back to nail the 3rd race for his other main client, Charles Hukill.

A pair of wins for leading trainer Jorge Lara on Saturday. Torres and Lonnie Meche both booted home a pair.

LAD 1 (MSW, 2yo, 6f) #7 BATESVILLE (9-2) set the pace and weakened in his turf sprint bow, and place finisher Ghost Ruler came back to roll by almost 10 lengths on Sept. 27th. He stalked and finished 3rd of 12 in a 5f main track sprint last time, and he ran into decent sort Expect A Flyer that day. I like the rider upgrade to Don Simington. #9 Valid Texan (6-1) sports a trio of local bullets for the 21% Verenzuela/Bob Young team, and barn is 19% with FTS. #5 Stormy M.L.T. (3-1) also shows three local bullets, and George Northrop Jr. is 20% FTS. Expect aggressive handling under PVal. #1 My Boy Coy (4-1) sports a couple of Evangeline bullet works, and Cody Autrey is 21% with firsters. Must overcome rail post, which can be intimidating for a young juvenile.

LAD 2 (MSW, 3-4-5yo, 5T) #8 FIVE FOOT MIKE (9-5) is out of 15% 1st grass sire Boundary, and turf wining dam has thrown a couple of turf winners as well. Sam Breaux is 28% 2nd off a layoff and 22% 1st turf. He has landed the place in 2 of 3 dirt sprint starts, and two of his races were originally scheduled for turf. #2 More Than Tactics (8-5) is out of 16% 1st turf sire More Than Ready, and he sports a pair of bullets for this. Morris Nicks is 25% with this type of layoff runner and 30% in turf sprints. PVal hops aboard the 2nd timer, who dueled and weakened to 5th of 10 in his long ago Churchill bow. #4 Huana Creek (15-1) earned his best two BSF’s in both of his local turf sprint tries. I like the rider upgrade to Carlos Gonzalez.

LAD 3 (Clm-5k, 3up, 5.5f) #3 JANIES MONEY (6-1) has claiming price cut in half, and I like aggressive pilot Carlos Gonzalez climbing aboard the early/pressing type. His speed ratings are on the rise, and he can compete here with another forward move. #1 Knock First (3-1) miss 2nd by a head in a local 10/2L race at this distance here on Sept. 6th, his first start versus winners. Jacinto sticks with the early/pressing rail-sitter. #8 Double Your Bid (9-2) has been part of trifecta in last five starts, including rallying show finish at this distance in February. Sam David Jr. trainee needs pace help to set up his late charge.

LAD 4 (Clm-15k, 3up, 5T) #10 ANTE GO GO (20-1) exits a sharp prominent throughout score in a 4.5f 2L claimer at Evangeline, and he has been in fine form since switching to the Sam Breaux barn in May. Uping the Ante is a 17% 1st grass sire, and dam has tossed a trio of turf winners. Riquelme booted her home last time, and she looms a pace factor at the very least on the surface switch. #1 Whiskey Bound (2-1) was necked in her career turf sprint bow last year, and with 16% turf sire Boundary, it is not surprising that she took to the turf right away. She shows five trifecta finishes in 8 dirt sprint starts since, and she drops in class and switches surfaces today. I like the rider switch to Simington, who is 31% with Allen Milligan here. #3 Stormy Date (5-2) is out of 11% first grass sire Magic Cat, and Bret Calhoun is 19% with horses trying turf for the initial time. He finished a fine 2nd behind Cape Bird in his first start for a tag on the Super Derby undercard, and Lonnie Meche got to know him that day.

LAD 5 (Mcl-5k, 3-4-5yo f&m, 6.5f) #4 DUDNEY ROAD (5-1) experienced an awkward start in his long ago MSW bow at Delta Downs. William Deakins is 3-9 with new additions to his barn, and 2-7 in the maiden claiming ranks. She adds lasix and sports a local 3f bullet for this. Dugas hops aboard, and he won a pair here yesterday. #2 Miss Kettle Woman (3-1) ran a much improved race when missing by a head here last time, and she earned the best last race BSF for that effort. Dupuis sticks, and Shumake is having a rock solid meet. This slightly shorter distance does not do her any favors. #11 Majestic Vision (4-1) has finished 4th and 2nd in a pair of 7 furlong 14-horse fields in her improved last pair since moving to the Ricky Bourque barn. Her newfound early/pressing speed can be dangerous in this spot.

LAD 6 (Mcl-30k, 3-4-5yo, 8T) #8 AWESOME EXPECTATON (6-1) receives a significant turf rider upgrade to D.Meche, and he has finished 3rd in both of his turf outings versus open maiden claimers. He fell far back last time, but that was because Lloyd’s Choice opened up a huge lead through fast fractions. A stalk and pounce trip behind reasonable fractions is anticipated today. #10 Mane Man (5-2) has been the beaten fav in all three of his turf starts, but he has run well each time. He earned a quality speed rating in latest place finish, and the aforementioned show finisher Lloyd’s Choice came back to graduate against my top on Sept. 18th. #2 Brahm’s Dynasty (9-2) has been on my radar screen since his solid 4th place turf bow on June 1st. He has disappointed in four starts since, but he did hit the board the only time today’s rider Dugas rode him. #3 Y’s Beau (2-1) drops back into a maiden claimer for Dallas Keen, and L.Meche is 0-5 with this barn here. Note that he frequently finds trouble, especially at the start.

LAD 7 (Clm-10k, 3up, 1mile-70yds) #4 T KETTLE (7-2) has improved smartly in last pair. He earned a quality speed rating in 7f maiden breaker on Aug. 31st, than came back to finish a close-up 2nd in first start versus winners on Sept. 19th. Dugas/Shumake are 4-11 together here, and they teamed up with first route winner Lil Miss Pynes yesterday. Barn shows a nice profit 1st route as well. #8 Way Too Saucy (5-2) exits a place finish in the 3L ranks, and he is definitely a player as he drops back into a proper 2L spot today. He owns fine tactical speed. #5 Reuben Prospect (5-1) regressed a bit off last time following a career top speed rating on Aug. 7th, and today’s pilot Jacinto rode him to that good close-up show finish.

LAD 8 (Clm-15k, f&m 3up, 8T) #6 DUCHESS OF NISTEL (7-2) has won 2 straight and 3 of 4. She is 2-2 on the turf and wheels back quickly. Might not look back under Carlos Gonzlaez for profitable turf trainer Mike Burgess. #8 Baycation (12-1) is 0-5 on the turf, but she was nabbed out of her last by Jerry Cart, and he’s 42% first off the claim. Barn $$ rider Don Simington climbs aboard. #11 New Morning (5-1) will be rallying late. #4 My Elle Prado (2-1) is typically in the hunt but has gone winless in 2007-2008.

LAD 9 (Mcl-5k, 3-4-5yo, 5f) #4 SENOR ROMEO (9-2) makes 2nd start at this bottom level, and he figures to flash speed at this abbreviated distance. Rosier/Tim Ice teamed up for a longshot winner recently. #10 Snuck N Cat (9-5) makes his 4th barn change and figures to flash speed under PVal. He drops to the bottom rung in first start since July 18th. #3 Stormin Skip (5-1) ran a nice race here two back from post 12. Torres strings along as he tries to rebound off a well-beaten 6th.

Burke (race 2) was a country mile behind the field throughout, and he rallied boldly in the lane to just miss the place. He easily galloped out past winner Heather’s Fantasy.

PVal failed to win his 4,000th race, and he is named to ride six horses on Saturday.

John Jacinto and Jose Riquelme both booted home a pair. Donnie Meche/Steve Asmussen teamed up for two wins on the Friday card.

LAD 1 (Clm-5k, 3up, 5.5f) #2 WE SANG DIXIE (2-1) failed to get involved in a $10k turf sprint last time, and Bret Calhoun is 31% turf/dirt. He pulled off a sharp $5k wire job at this course/distance under today’s pilot L.Meche on Aug. 29th, and he might not look back in this spot. #4 Pistol Avenue (5-2) was a bit over his head in a starter allowance affair last time. Two of his 3 wins this year were at this $5k level, and his last local start at this distance resulted in a $7.5k victory. #1 Lukey’s Legacy (5-1) has his claimed price cut in half, and he is an off the pace threat if able to return to sharp June-July form here.

LAD 2 (Clm-10/2L, LA-bred f&m 3up, 1mile-70yds) #8 LIL MISS PYNES (7-2) is clearly on the upswing and exits best last race BSF in 1st start versus winners, a wide place finish from an outer post at 6f over good footing. Dugas/Shumake are 3-10 together, and barn is a profitable 19% sprint/route. #4 Twice Twelve (9-2) is tagged for the first time following a 7f drubbing from post 11 in Aug. 29th Evangeline comeback. Her lone win was a romping wire job at a flat mile last year, and trainer Sam Breaux is clicking at a 22% rate at the current meet. #12 Niner’s Star (6-1) was an even 4th in the same race my top exits. She attracts leading rider Simington and projects a decent stalking trip on the stretchout.

LAD 3 (Mcl-5k, 3-4-5yo, 7f) #1 BRED AS A GEM (6-1) earned improved pace figs in a $7.5k 7f event at Evangeline last time. He stalked in 4th and had the midstretch lead before weakening to 5th of 14 in the late stages. D.Meche/F.Melancon Jr. are 2-9 together at the current stand, and a bit more improvement can get the job done at this bottom rung. #4 Margarita City (9-5) earned a BSF good enough to win many of these $5k races in latest place finish, and that was a $10k event on Sept. 25th. Dugas/Hukill won 4 races together in Sept., and this one is an obvious early/pressing player, but he is 0-10 and has failed 3 times as the fav. #10 Snuck in Bayou (5-1) has run a few good races, including neck defeat in $10k bow and a $5k solid show finish in August. Simington strings along.

LAD 4 (Clm-5/2L, f&m 3up, 5.5f) #6 PINE DERBY (5-1) held on by a head as even money fav in $5k maiden breaker, and place finish Sunlitsideup came back to win next outing. He sports a best of 36 bullet for this, and trainer John Locke is 21% with horses attempting a repeat. Simington sticks with the stalk and pounce type. #9 Spainish Eyes (6-1) was nostrilized in fine stalk and pounce trip in a 4.5f 2L event at Evangeline last time. D.Meche/S.Asmussen teamed up to win yesterday’s opener. #11 F Star (30-1) meets a field with plenty of pace, and her 22% trainer Michael Franklin is 20% with this type of layoff runner. She can rally for a share at nice odds.

LAD 5 (Mcl-20k, LA-bred 3-4-5yo f&m, 8T) #5 HONEST THIEF (5-1) is out of 12% turf sire Storm Day, and turf winning dam has thrown a couple of grass winners as well. Profitable turf trainer Mike Burgess has her now, and he’s 22% dirt/turf. Top notch local turf rider D.Meche climbs aboard. #4 Princess Tide (5-2) will never find an easier spot to graduate. 0-16 miss rallied to finish 2nd behind runaway winner Bride of the Bay in off the turf 7f event last time, and she finished a decent 3rd from post 10 in a turf route before that. The horses she has been facing in recent turf races are better than this group, including Madame Elle, Sefas Belle, and Awesome Amazon. PVal sticks with the Pam Simpson runner. #7 Stacey Lee (4-1) drops into a maiden claimer for the first time. She has finished 6th, 4th, and 3rd in her three turf tries. She puts the blinkers back on, and she set the pace and weakened to 4th versus better in her lone turf try with the hood. Leblanc is 2-10 with this barn.

LAD 6 (Clm-5/2L, 3up, 1mile-70yds) #3 FORCE COMMAND USMC (15-1) won at first asking in a local sprint, and he has hit the board in a couple of other starts, a sprint place finish at 34-1, and a route show finish at 50-1. Leblanc/WT Howard 22% together, and barn is 32% sprint/route. An improved off the pace effort 3rd start back is possible. #12 Came Low (5-2) dives in class and stretches back out in his first start since June. Robideaux is 20% with this type of returnee and 21% overall in route races. PVal hops aboard the early runner. #6 Only Man in Town (9-2) missed by a ½ length when last seen at this level on Aug. 14th. John Locke is 17% with this type of layoff runner, and I am expecting a decent stalking trip today.

LAD 7 (Clm-15/3L, f&m 3up, 5T) #7 JORGA’S SONG (6-1) flopped from post 10 in a flat mile turfer last time. She has claimed price cut in half, and Alfonso Balderas is 27% with turf sprinters. He is also a profitable 10% with the route/sprint move. #4 Tiger Timber (3-1) ran well in both of her Ellis Park turf sprints, and she gets leading rider Simington in her 1st start versus winners. #1 Smitty’s Shine (10-1) is 0-5 with one place finish on turf, but all of those were around two turns, including place finish at 7.5f here. She won a couple of dirt sprints here in July-Aug., and Morris Nicks is 30% in turf sprint races.

LAD 8 (MSW, 2yo fil, 6f) #6 ROLL PRESLEE ROLL (3-1) finished a solid 2nd of 12 in her course/distance bow at 14-1. New pilot Simington is 32% with Schultz here, and barn is a profitable 18% with 2nd timers. #12 Lil’ Hottie (4-1) was a clear 2nd at less than 2-1 in her 5f Evangeline bow on Aug. 14th. Sam Breaux is 16% with 2nd timers, and he is clicking at a 22% rate at the current meet. #11 Lauren P. (9-2) was well clear of the show in her 3-1 bow, and she was beaten by fellow firster Dyna’s Greeley (Cecil Borel). Asmussen 23% with 2nd timers.

LAD 9 (Clm-15k, 3up, 8.5T) #12 EXPLOIT EXPOSED (5-1) was my 7-1 top last time, but he couldn’t quite reel in fav Bamboo Gap. He needs to work out a stalking trip from outside post today, and I trust that top local turf rider Donnie Meche is up to the task. #5 Chuckie’s in Love (7-2) receives a rider upgrade to Simington 2nd off a layoff, and he was only a length behind my top choice on Sept. 19th. #7 Wild Dinner Party (5-1) is up from the $5k dirt route ranks. He is 1-1 over the local turf and might get brave if able to shake loose early. Torres/Sam David Jr. 30% together, and barn is 27% dirt/turf.

LAD 10 (OC-16/1x, 3up, 6f) #3 VOICE (8-1) earned an above par BSF in off the turf 7f maiden win here last time, and place finisher Shoppin Shirley came back to score. Well bred $525k Keeneland sales grad has fired two big shots with blinkers on, and he needs a contested pace between Ms. Officer Rocket, Velvet Angel, and Aggressive Gold. D.Meche/Al Stall Jr. 28% together. #7 Illuminique (7-2) earned best last race speed rating in 5.5 length romp at 7f, and he was re-claimed out of that heat by Jan Haynes/Jorge Lara, the leading owner and trainer at the current stand. Lonnie Meche is 28% with this outfit, and the stalking type could easily make it five straight local sprint tallies. #5 Agressive Gold (15-1) has been part of trifecta in all 10 career starts. Dugas/Hukill combo have been clicking the past month, and she looms a speed factor throughout.

LAD 11 (Mcl-20k, LA-bred 3-4-5yo f&m, 8T) #2 SEXY WALK (7-2) is on the improve for Morris Nicks. She was 9th in her ’07 turf route bow at 4-1. She returned with a pair of place finishes this year, including length defeat in off the turf 7f event last time. PVal strings along in her 3rd race off the shelf. #1 St. Tribute (2-1) has hit the board in last two turf tries, including best last race speed rating on July 27th. My top two have a common opponent in Galfriend. My top beat that one by 2 lengths on Aug. 23rd, while my 2nd choice split decisions with that rival on July 5th & 27th. #8 Autum’s Delight (8-1) tries a turf claimer for the first time as she returns to the Gilbert Ciavalgia barn. Trainer shows a nice profit dirt/turf and with this type of layoff runner.

A five-horse spill in Thursday’s 5th, a turf sprint, was triggered when went Battle of Flowers (Colby Hernandez) clipped heels and fell, causing a chain reaction that included Hella Bella (Carlos Gonzalez), Mizzen to Me (Gerard Melancon), Aly Mon (Roberto Villafan), and Miss Kiran (Iram Diego). Villafan, Diego, Melancon, and Hernandez were off their remaining mounts. Gonzalez came back to with the 6th aboard One To Boot for Bret Calhoun, but he took off his final mount Suberi in the 7th.

Donnie Meche/Al Stall Jr. teamed up for two wins on the card, including my grass feature best bet Rose Medallion. Leading trainer Jorge Lara saddled a pair of winners on the card. Pat Valenzuela won the opener and now stands one win shy of 4,000. PVal is named to ride 3 horses on Friday, with Teresa’s Sparkle in race 3 a serious wire job threat.

Louisiana Downs track announcer Travis Stone is one of five named to call the fall meet at Churchill Downs. Each announcer will call one week, with my colleague and friend Travis getting the nod in week two (Nov. 5th-9th). Good luck Travis!

LAD 1 (Mcl-25k, 3-4-5yo, 6f) #3 DROLL (3-2) holds a significant speed fig advantage. He returned with a solid runner-up effort at 5f in a race originally scheduled for turf, and show finisher Leona’s Sweetboy came back to score. #7 Les Bold (3-1) broke last and rallied to finish a decent 4th in $12.5k sprint bow. L.Meche/L.Robideaux Jr. are 23% together, and I like the class hike for a profitable 2nd timer outfit. #1 Deputy’s Lariat (9-2) is out of 11% debut sire The Deputy, and the 4yo gelding shows a decent 4f work on Sept. 13th. PVal/Mouton 36% together. Barn 0-10 debut maiden claiming.

LAD 2 (Clm-5/2L, f&m 3up, 1mile-70yds) #8 BURKE (4-1) finally graduated in her 28th start at this distance here last time. 5yo mare has hit the board in all five outings under Torres, and she hardly meets a tough field of winners. #10 La Tunnel (3-1) has hit the board in 4 straight at this level, and she caught the slop in a place finish as the fav behind a runaway winner last time. Dugas and Hukill have been winning races recently, and she looms a pace factor at the very least. #7 Irish Fight (10-1) earned best last race speed rating in 6th place finish in a local sprint on Sept. 14th. She did finish 3rd going sprint/route on July 20th.

LAD 3 (MSW, 3-4-5yo f&m, 5T) #3 TERESA’S SPARKLE (2-1) receives a barn upgrade to Morris Nicks, and the speedy filly attracts aggressive pilot PVal. She was a fine 2nd from post 12 behind Serrano at this course/distance on Aug. 3rd, and that one clicked right back versus winners. #1 Tempted ‘n Tried (6-1) shows a few nice recent drills on Aug. 28th and Oct. 1st. Pam Simpson is 3-16 in turf sprints, and leading rider Don Simington is a profitable 18% with this barn. Texas bred should handle turf based on pedigree. #4 Chita Girl (7-2) has hit the board in 3 of last 4 at Evangeline, and winner from her last (Strawberry Ball) came back to score in 1st start versus winners here.

LAD 4 (Clm-5k, f&m 3up, 5.5f) #11 ME EITHER (10-1) disappointed at 7-2 in latest $7.5k start here. She goes 3rd race off the shelf for the 27% Saenz/Pleasant team, and she may have bounced last time following a strong runner-up effort in an Aug. 16th turf sprint, her 1st start in 5-months. #1A Lady Ann Summers (7-2) was 3rd in the same race my top exits, and there should be enough pace to flatter her late kick. She reunites with winning pilot Lonnie Meche. #10 True Love Story (2-1) earned an above par BSF in clear place finish at 6.5f here on Aug. 29th. Obvious stalking presence for the 28% Jacinto/J.Locke tandem.

LAD 5 (Clm-15/2L, 3up, 5T) #10 KELLY’SPREMONITION (9-2) came off a layoff and promptly graduated in turf bow at this distance on June 22nd, then she had all sorts of trouble in close-up 5th in 1st start versus winners, and could have cleared that Alw-2L spot with clear sailing. A failed flat mile against Hi Ho Cheerio followed, than she totally flopped when turned back to this distance last time. She drops and reunites with winning pilot Don Simington, and this distance suits as well. #11 Silver Dollar Sam (2-1) was a solid 3rd in lone optional claiming turf sprint start, and that is the same Sept. 1st race my top exits. He owns the top turf sprint BSF based on that race. #6 Mollie’s Man (9-2) tries turf for the 27% Jacinto/Bob Young team, and he is probably the one to catch today.

LAD 6 (Mcl-15k, LA-bred 2yo fil, 7f) #8 PATROON (5-1) is slowly improving for 16% trainer James Hudson, and this is her best draw to date after landing the outside post in 1st two outings and the 10-hole on Aug. 24th. Leading rider Simington chose this one over 9-2 Jerry Cart FTS Creole Rose. #1 Wise Charge (5-2) defeated my top last time, and she goes from post 11 to the cozy rail. #6 Wild Little Sailor (12-1) has faced some decent company in her 1st 4 outings, and her 29 BSF on July 19th is only 1 point behind today’s rail-sitting fav. Off the pace threat can sneak into the exotics under Torres.

LAD 7 (OC-30/2x, LA-bred 3up, 8.5T) #4 ONE AFTERNOON (15-1) got the job done for me at 17-1 on July 25th, and he was a solid 3rd in a local flat mile turf affair on June 6th. He was only beaten 2.75 lengths at 7.5f last time, and he figures to appreciate today’s added distance. He lands a better post and has more positional speed that he showed on Aug. 30th. #1 St. Zarb (5-1) has only raced on the turf twice, and he stalked and weakened in the stakes ranks versus the likes of Candy Ball, Beta Capo, Diggy Fresh, Autobeacat and Desert Wheat. He comes out of a couple of dirt sprints and might get brave if able to sneak away early. #3 Rock N Rail (10-1) flopped at 7.5f last time, and that was the 2nd time in the past few months that he failed to threaten at that unusual distance. He ran well in his last two at 8-8.5f on the turf, and he beat subsequent stakes winner Diggy Fresh on July 6th.

LAD 8 (MSW, LA-bred 2yo, 6.5f) #4 ISEEZYA (4-1) debuts for Jerry Hardin, and leading rider Don Simington shows up here instead of riding Jerry Cart’s FTS. Barn shows a profit with FTS and 2yo’s. He did work a bullet 3f here in Aug. #3 Sky Creed (15-1) stalked and weakened in his productive debut, a race in which Gratified and Cajun Thunder both returned to score. #5 Ace and the Queen (9-2) shows a nice gate work here on Setp. 25th. Sam Breaux is 20% FTS, and Melancon is 36% with this barn.

LAD 9 (OC-16/1x, 3up, 8T) #6 FARMINGTON (8-1) was along in time to graduate by a head in a 7.5f turfer on Aug. 30th. Donnie Meche sticks with the off the pace type, and today’s expected honest early pace should play into his hands. #1 Lemon Drop Magic (5-1) dueled and finished 4th in lone turf outing, a race won by today’s fav Ball Hall. Nick Leggio is 3-6 sprint/route, and he looms a ground saving prominent throughout trip under Kerwin Clark. He was a wide 5th behind Forestry Gold last time, and that one came back to score again.I’ll give the gelded son of Lemon Drop Kind another shot on the sod. #9 Ball Hall (5-2) ended up last in the yielding World Series of Poker last time. Winner Autobeacat came back to run 2nd to Jonesboro on the Super Derby undercard, and place finisher Wise River won a Grade 3 in his next Hawthorne turf outing. He crossed the line 1st in is previous two turf races here, and note that my top’s pilot D.Meche rode him both times. Why the $16k tag, and why not a 2x spot? He has fine turf trainer Mike Burgess in his corner.

LAD 10 (Clm-10k, LA-bred f&m 3up, 6f) #2 OUR ANGEL HOUR (4-1) has been in fine form here with 3 wins and a 2nd in her last 4 starts, and note that she was DQ’d on Aug. 15th. She owns pressing speed and gets a much better post today. She’s back in with state breds, and I like the confident rise from $5k to $10k. #1 Finally Alone (2-1) is now trained by Steve Asmussen, and he’s 2-36 at the current meet. Prairie Meadows class dropper figures to flash speed from the rail under D.Meche. #5 Hanna Girl (10-1) was dusted as my top on Sept. 6th, and new trainer Tony Richey is 2-4 off the claim. Barn $$ rider Jacinto strings along, and she does show a solid local drill since latest.
