The Old Switcheroo website provides a Web 2.0 spin on what we used to call a swap meet in the little country town where I grew up.

Old Switcheroo is like any healthy relationship: it’s give and take. You give others your stuff, so that at some point in the future you can take their stuff. So start things off by listing your stuff. Try to list as much as you can, since you receive credits for the number of items that you list during your initial listing.

So, sign-up and start listing that old stuff of yours that’s just taking up space, but someone else wants badly.

But seeing Fawlty Towers isn’t the most interesting part about this opportunity. You see, the main character in Fawlty Towers is played by John Cleese and his name is Basil. The second, or maybe main, part to this is you get to help a little donkey travel around the world and visit wherever it is you call home. After you’ve enjoyed the DVD’s of a week and shown Basil around, you send the DVD’s and Basil to the next person on the list. Be sure to include something unique from your hometown to share with the next person on the list.

Basil has already been to exotic places like Arizona, Australia, Nova Scotia, Belarus, South Africa, Belgium and even Dayton, OH! Where can we send him next?

Have you ever had a donkey stay at your house? No? Well now’s your lucky chance. Basil the Donkey (featured in the image to the right) is going on a grand adventure, hoping to travel the world. And he wants to visit you!

When Basil visits he brings another Basil with him…Basil Fawlty (played by John Cleese) in the hysterical 70’s sitcom Fawlty Towers. Basil doesn’t go anywhere without Basil, so when he visits he’ll have the Fawlty Towers DVD Collection with him as well.

Basil can only stay for 1 week though, after that you have to send him packing to meet new people. Who will he visit next? Whoever is next on the list.

This seems to be a very intriguing method for spreading the news about a specific product, as well as building a community of fans around an idea. I’ve signed up to be on the list and will let you know about how things turn out. I encourage you to do the same!
