With the beginning of August 2009 I ended a 15 year negative habit and the resulting consequences of those 15 years. In July we paid off our last credit card to a complete $0 balance across the board. I can tell you from my personal experience, the weight that was lifted feels incredible to no longer carry. We still have bills we’re focusing on with medical bills, car payment and those darn school loans to get rid of next.

My wife and I are big fans of Dave Ramsey and we worked an adapted version of the plan that Dave presents for getting yourself out of debt and changing your life. He regularly says that people need to "Act their wage" and "Live like no one else so later you can live like no one else." We really tried to take those comments to heart and change our family’s future.

I guarantee that if you read through what Dave and his team have to say about your personal finances and even your integrity as an individual for taking responsibility for your financial decisions, you’ll change your life forever.

I’ll also guarantee you that it’s not easy. You’re going to probably be grumpy a bit as you work through these efforts, but it’s not much different than the significantly hard work of exercising and getting your physical body in shape.

Dave Ramsey has a show on the Fox News Network, daily podcasts, numerous books including his Financial Peace University class. He also travels the country for live events. I really suggest you pick up something of his and give him a try if you’re looking for a financial change.

Don’t wait for someone else to bail you out of your situation. Get down and get serious and take you success and future into your own hands.

Raising a Child to Be Financially Smart

With the future economy situation staring us in the face, I can tell you one thing, figuring out how to educate my kids on a couple of different things:

Teach them how to not make the same mistakes that I have as a child, teenager, college student and now an adult.
Teach them how to be flexible and understand how to adjust what they know and learn to the current financial situation.

I came across this article from GreatSchools entitled "Smart Money: Seven Ways to Raise a Financially Literate Child".

Some of these items may be obvious, others may share a nugget of additional thought or detail that maybe you haven’t thought about until this point.

Encourage a work ethic
Get your money stories straight
Facilitate financial reflection
Become a charitable family
Teach financial literacy
Be aware of the values you model
Moderate your extreme money tendencies
