HavenWorks.com Leaves Me Speechless

There are those times where you uncover a website that you’re just not sure what to do with when you find it. The HavenWorks.com site is just that kind of site. My friend Simeon actually sent me a link for this site. It’s something to be seen for sure.

I’m really not sure what to say about the HavenWorks.com site. It does literally leave me speechless. It appears that it’s a randomly thrown together collection of links and information on current news events and politics.

The design is the draw, or repellant depending on your viewpoint. It reminds me of a website I featured awhile back because of it’s "design qualities". The HavenWorks.com site is much more text heavy, it’s all just overwhelming.

Would anyone ever really use a site like this as a regular source of information?

Today we had our student led conferences at my kid’s school. It’s an opportunity for parents to meet with the teacher’s and student and see how their year is progressing. Early today I heard about another 10-year old who’s teaching his teachers a thing or two.

10-year old Dalton Sherman spoke to the a back-to-school kick-off event for the Dallas Independent School District in Texas. His speech is an inspiration to teachers, or should be and it should also remind us all of the inherent value in each child that steps into the schools every day along with our own children.

If You’re a Blogger – Should You CMP.LY

Marines Already Have Transformers – VIDEO

With Transformers:Revenge of the Fallen out in theaters, weapons of destruction are pretty cool to watch on the big screen. Wouldn’t it be nice if we already had some of that technology available to us for real? Perhaps we do. Check-out this video we uncovered of a the F-35B fighter jet that does a little bit of transforming of its own.

I finally watched the movie tonight at IMAX. Definitely the way to see it! Very good movie, but even less kid friendly than the first one.

Serious Restrictions Coming to Internet Freedom?

This story has been around for a little while but the question is still out on the impact of these types of decisions. Have you been aware of this pending legislation? Does it worry you? The long-term effects of these changes could be more than you would think initially.

The news is regularly peppered with stories of computers and networks being compromised and security being questioned. The new bill introduced as the Cybersecurity Act of 2009 will give the US Government extended reach in shutting down portions of the Internet as they deem necessary, as well as gaining control and access to data previously off limits to government review without due process and legal warrants.

Perhaps more interesting than the article itself is the amount of comments that have now been collected on the article. Read the article to get a better idea of the details of what’s being discussed, but read the comments to start getting colorful representation of how these proposed changes are expected to impact individuals and businesses.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation provides good overview of the impact to these proposed changes as well.

Where I Stand – Let Your Opinions Be Heard

The elections are over for the US, but as the drama with Iran continues to unfold we’re reminded that there are a lot of different opinions floating around the world around us. Sometimes you we like to share those opinions and perhaps more rarely hear what other people think at the same time. There comes a time when you just want to let people know where you stand on an issue.

Speedtraps Mashup from Njection

I’ll be honest. I normally don’t go the speed limit on most highways. I usually try to stick with traffic or a little faster. Even with that admittance of guilt though, I also accept the fact that I’m speeding and if I get pulled over I deserve the ticket. I don’t use a radar detector.

That doesn’t mean I’m not aware of certain streets and areas where there’s normally a bit of extra police presence on the streets.

The Njection website provides a nice little speedtrap mashup map for cities all over the United States.

Red light cameras and speed traps are good ideas in theory, but not quite when put into practice. They have become a convenient and socially accepted way to fine drivers and increase local revenue while not actually enhancing road safety, as studies have shown. Article after article nationwide cites how red light cameras are used to increase the amount of money certain cities receive from fines, how well over half of certain towns’ operating budgets come from speeding tickets, and yet how particular kinds of accidents, such as rear-end crashes, actually increase regardless of speed traps.

I believe the greatest deterrent to speeding is a single police officer going 5 miles under the speed limit in the fast lane of a major highway. They can back up a line of traffic for miles. Similar to how Njection feels, not sure if that’s a better solution or not if safety is the ultimate motivation to reduce speeding though.

Filing Your Taxes at the Last Minute

You know what tomorrow is don’t you? If you live in the United States you’ll probably realize it’s Tax Day. Time to start helping pay off that $12 trillion dollar deficit right? I heard an interesting fact this weekend. Do you know if you started a business back when we switched from BC to AD and you last $1M dollars a day every day up until today, you’d still need over 700 more years of losing that money to have lost $12 trillion?
