It did seem strange that this year’s regular Children’s Week didn’t have anything to do with Northrend at all except for the eating of cake that you can buy in Dalaran.

Oracles

Thanks to MMO Champion, we can see what this Children’s Week in Northrend will be like. What I can say is that it’s nothing really great. It’s just like what you’d expect for Children’s week but it’s something new and it has a different flavor so I guess we’re willing to take that. The fact that it’s going to award a pet after completion is reason enough for some people to participate.

Unlike the Children’s Week of Azeroth and Outlands, it seems like it won’t be an Alliance/Horde thing. The orphans that you will be showing around will be either a Curious Oracle Hatchling or a Curious Wolvar Pup, obviously from the Oracles/Frenzyheart rivalry going on in the Sholazar Basin. I’m guessing that the orphan you show around depends on what which faction you’re aligned with but of course I could be wrong. After all if you haven’t aligned yourself with one of the factions yet, what then?

The quest chain to show around the orphan in Northrend starts in the Orphanage area that will be added when patch 3.2 comes out. The quest has you visiting the Winterfin Retreat where King Mrgl-Mrgl is in the Borean Tundra, the Bronze Dragonshrine in Dragonblight, Grizzlemaw in Grizzly Hills, Queen Alexstrasza in Wyrmrest Temple in Dragonblight, Hemet Nesingwary in Sholazar Basin and then purchasing a paper zeppelin from the Wonderworks in Dalaran. After finishing the chain, you get a pet oracle/wolvar in the mail.

As you can see it’s nothing really that great but it’s pretty much what you’d expect for a Children’s Week celebration.

Northrend Children’s Week has arrived in Dalaran! Players can find out more by visiting the Eventide District.

Wow Children’s Week again?! But at least it’s finally also in Dalaran. Does this mean that if you missed doing some achievements in the past Children’s Week, you can do it when this goes live? If so then why didn’t they just release this for Children’s Week a few weeks ago? That would have made the event more meaningful especially for level 80’s. Are we getting death knight kiddie orphans? LOL

Portal areas in all major cities now offer a portal to the Blasted Lands near the Dark Portal.

I remember just recently that they said Orgimmar and Stormwind were going to have portals that lead directly to the Stair of Destiny, the first thing you see when you enter the Dark Portal. I guess they might have scratched that and made the portals available to all major cities that lead to the Blasted Lands near the Dark Portal. That’s a nice swap, walk just a bit further but you get to travel to the Outlands more easily with a portal in each city.

The local Postal Service has grown tired of walking so far each day to collect mail and has decided to install a large number of new mailboxes to Stormwind, Undercity, Darnassus and Orgrimmar.

More mailboxes is always nice. Silvermoon City (and I think Exodar) showed that having several mailboxes in a city is very convenient and that cities like Undercity that had only one mailbox can be a pain. The fact that Dalaran has a LOT of mailboxes is REALLY convenient since if you need to get something, you can get it right away. Nice move to add mailboxes in those cities.

The Children’s Week craze is finally over and I have to say that I’m really glad that it is. We finally get a break from about two straight weeks of gunning for achievements for both Noblegarden and Children’s Week. Now we can get back to our “boring” every life doing whatever we do, not having to worry about getting a run through Utgarde Pinnacle with your orphan or doing battlegrounds like mad trying to do School For Hard Knocks.

posing with orphan

I feel pretty good about myself for getting both the Noble and the Patron titles on my main character. I wanted the Noble title because I didn’t have a title on that toon yet and when I saw that both titles were stuff I can do with just a little effort, I really went for getting both. I’m not gunning for that meta achievement that awards that cool drake mount but for those who are then I hope that you were lucky to finish in time.

For Noblegarden, though I didn’t get to see what the one day event was like in past years I think that it’s safe to say this year’s was fun. I think that they laid a nice framework to make some improvements for next year especially since it’s now a week long thing with more stuff to do. Maybe in the future we can fight an egg stealing menace and get cool items.

For Children’s Week, I mentioned before that it would have been cool if we brought our orphans to see cool sites in Northrend like the Wymrest Temple or the Emerald Dragonshrine, much like how we brought them around the old world and Outlands. My complaint about the School For Hard Knocks achievement was that it made players do things that you normally wouldn’t do in a battleground if you wanted to win. I’m talking about fighting in the flag area in EoTS early in the game just to get a chance to capture it (I got a lot of screams from people to stop fighting in the middle) or purposely going on defense in WSG just to return the flag even if offense is very much needed. These practices are quite counter productive in the big picture. Blizzard should have made goals that were a bit more going with the flow with what you would do if you wanted to win instead of this.

So anyway we’re world event free for a while now with the Midsummer Festival up next this coming June. We have a few weeks of break and then it’s the achievement craze again so enjoy this boring period while it lasts.

How’s everyone doing with their Children’s Week achievements? I’m doing quite nicely considering it’s still pretty early in the time allotted for this event but I’ll probably have a hard time doing the School For Hard Knocks achievement since I hate pvp. Today was the first time I entered a Battleground since the expansion came out. It’s still a relatively easy World Event to get achievements for though. In fact some people already have theirs done since I’ve seen a few guys running around with the Patron/Matron title. This wouldn’t have been possible if one of the achievements worked like how the text said it would.

children's week

The achievement Daily Chores was supposed to have you do at least one daily quest everyday for five consecutive days. If this stuck then no one would have that Patron/Matron title until after the fifth day, which isn’t now. CM Bornakk came out to officially say that they changed the requirements for this achievement so that you get it after 5 dailies, even on the same day, as long as you have your orphan out. This makes it much easier for those people who want the patron/Matron title but would have had a problem doing a daily for five consecutive days due to play schedule.

My suspicion is that this could have been a bug and instead of discrediting everyone who already got it, they just officially changed it to what it doing. Either that or the text on the achievement wasn’t updated soon enough. Either way someone screwed up. It’s not the first time an achievement bugged out on me. I got discredited for the achievement Home Alone where I hearth with my orphan out. I had to do it again when I logged back in sometime later.

Anyway, now that this is official it’s nice to know that I won’t lose credit for what I did. Enjoy the rest of Children’s Week!
