The once again time to see what Ghostcrawler and the rest of the development team has to say as they talk about the their thoughts on the Death Knight class going forward. We saw the shaman and mage classes get their Q&A earlier so now it’s the turn for the Death Knight.

death knight death and decay

If you’ve read the PTR patch notes for patch 3.2, you would have seen the change to Unholy Blight turning it from an AoE effect to a single target effect wherein every time you use death coil the target gets a 10 second DoT worth 30% of the Death Coil damage. This is one move they made so that Death Knights don’t have a huge advantage over the other melee classes at doing AoE damage.

The dual wielding issue was somewhat addressed by adding a talent in the Frost Tree called Threat of Thassarian for patch 3.2 which allows your strikes and Obliterate to also deal damage with the off hand weapon. Ghostcrawler mentioned that they might have to limit dual wielding as a viable option to just the Frost tree, because making all specs viable for PvP and Tanking doesn’t leave much room to work with if you add dual wielding to the equation for all trees.

Issues with Dancing Rune Weapon and Summon Gargoyle were addressed by making them cost a flat amount of runic power and will be out for a set amount of time rather than it relying on the amount of runic power the death knight has. There are also no plans to make two different sets of runeforge enchants available when switching specs through dual spec. They cite that ret pallies and prot pallies have to use two different weapons for the two roles and gems and enchants aren’t saved either. I guess this is a pretty unique problem for death knights since they can tank with a 2 hander but they just have to deal with it bby having to reforge the rune every time.

Ghostcrawler also mentioned something cool for the future involving bringing back the ghoul voices of the game. they had to take them out because they were using vendor voices and that seemed awkward. Hopefully when they bring the voices back it will come back much cooler than before.

So pretty much everything that they touched on that really mattered they already at least started to address in patch 3.2 and not much about plans for the more distant future. I guess depending on how you look at it, that could be a good thing or a bad thing.

It’s for this reason that the annual April Fools joke is always something fans anticipate. We’ve seen a lot of this sense of humor especially in the myriad of pop culture references inserted in World of Warcraft.

This is why its very much in the spirit of what Blizzard does that they came up with a very simple old school type game called Failoc-alypse. It’s a simple side scroller hack and slash game that’s very amusing. Since Blizcon is a hot topic right now, it’s no surprise that the game is set outside Blizcon where your chracter seems to be fending off several waves of rampaging murloc people.

Me playing Failoc-alypse

The game has you choose between three “heroes” which appear to be representative of the 3 Blizzard franchises out there – Diablo, Warcraft and Starcraft. You get to choose from a Death Knight from WoW, a Witch Doctor from Diablo 3 and what appears to be a Starcraft marine but I’m not sure.

Go ahead and try it at least for a while. If anything it really makes for a good laugh! Click here to play Failoc-alypse.

Zavex from the Cenarion Circle realm says he’s been playing Warcraft 3 a lot lately and thinks that the Necromancer is a core class missing from Warcraft lore and would be nice to include th class in the game. As I would have expected, Blizzard CM Nethaera shot the idea down for now.

We have many interesting classes that we could implement, but like all things, we needed to decide which classes would be the most interesting and capable of being robust additions to the game from the start. The Necromancer is one class that has been in consideration before. Who knows. Perhaps someday the Necromancer will come into play within the World of Warcraft, but that is something for the future to decide. Source

If I were to interpret that response right, I’d have to say that it’s a “most probably not” at best. If it were, there’s really good reason not to have one. First of all a necromancer would be too close to a warlock to make a real distinction between skills to make a class that’s unique from the rest of the classes in the game. Like the warlock, a necromancer would be an advocate of the dark arts and would also be a minion based class. The only thing that would separate a necromancer from a warlock would be the ability to raise the dead and turn them into minions. This brings me to my second point.

If raising the dead would be the necromancer’s unique ability, it would be extremely difficult to work that out in the game. The reason why the necromancer was a viable class in Diablo 2 was the fact that the hero fights multiple enemies at once and they die a lot faster and with much more ease that in WoW. For this reason, it wasn’t hard at all to find a corpse to raise or blow up using corpse explosion while playing. Finding a corpse to raise in WoW reliably would be a pain in the rear. Even if you were to say that you could store this raising power in portable reagents for future use, then that would look very very much like a warlock’s soul shard wouldn’t it?

Besides, with the Death Knight hero class coming in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion I think it’s about time we steer clear of more of the “evil” classes.
