After years of waiting, Ryne Sandberg finally has his big break. Following the firing of Charlie Manuel, the Philadelphia Phillies have named the former Chicago Cubs superstar second baseman as their new manager. The 53-year-old was the team’s third base coach.
How will Sandberg be as a manager?
I think he’ll have success. Not only did he exhibit a great mind for the game of baseball as a player, he has paid his dues. In the previous two seasons, he was the manager of the Triple-A team for the Phillies. With Sandberg in charge, that minor league team had its best seasons ever.
Additionally, this is a guy who truly understands how hard it is to land this gig. He won’t take it for granted and will instead go all in on Day 1.
That said, Manuel won’t be easy to replace. He’s Philadelphia’s all-time winningest manager and also led the team to a World Series championship.
Good luck, Ryne. I think you can reach and exceed expectations.
