Believe it or not, we are actually getting a sequel to Independence Day and it will hit theaters almost exactly 20 years after the original release.  I don’t really know how I feel about it to be honest. I loved the first film but I don’t feel like it needs a follow-up. It exists in its own time and space and, I think, it should be left alone.

Regardless of my opinion, the production of Independence Day 2 has been greenlit and should reach theaters on June 24, 2016. To meet this deadline, it’s believed that things will get rolling in May 2014. What’s interesting, however, is that the first film’s big star, Will Smith, is not on board and the original director, Roland Emmerich, hasn’t been officially signed. If they are hoping to recapture any of the magic from the 1996 film, they, at least, need to secure Emmerich.

In case you are unfamiliar, Independence Day is an alien-invasion movie in which even the American president dusted off his piloting skills to help fight their unwelcome guests. In addition to Smith, the film also starred Bill Paxton (the president), Judd Hirsch and Jeff Goldblum.  It’s doubtful that any of these actors will be reprising their roles.

It’s presumed that, once Emmerich finalizes his contract, he will begin casting. It’s also being reported that more than one sequel is being considered but they are focusing on this one for now (thank goodness).

I know Will Smith probably thought this project was beneath him but, really, this is a man who recently starred in After Earth with his son Jaden. That movie was TERRIBLE so could this Independence Day sequel truly be worse than that?  I guess anything is possible but I doubt it.

Will you be seeing this sequel when it comes to theaters? Who do you think should be cast in the leading role (don’t say Chris Pratt – he’s busy enough)?
